Chapter 18- She’s Awake

At some point last night they had put a cast on Claire’s foot. I was waking up just as she was. I raced over to her to keep her from trying to sit up, I don’t think the doctor would want her doing that after what happened. “Are you alright? Do you need anything? I’m so sorry.” I wasn’t sure if she had heard what I said or not, so I pushed her back against the bed and fluffed her pillow. “What… what happened? Where are we? What day is it?” I sighed in relief. She heard me. She responded. Everything really will be fine. But I had to explain what happened to her from the night before. It all went so fast I had to think about the events that took place before I spoke. “We were walking to my car in the rain and you tripped. A broken glass bottle cut your ankle and a little piece of glass stayed in your leg. I noticed something was wrong because you weren’t responding to me so I drove straight here. I called Louis on the way and Hanaa was with him. They stopped by yesterday and I hope you don’t mind, but we explained to Louis what was happening, and about your mom. The doctor says your leg should be fine in a week or so. You went into shock. The nurse said if something traumatic has happened to a person, unconsciously, things trigger the memory of the traumatic moment. From what you’ve told me and what you’re dad and Hanaa have come up with, your memory was your mother’s death. The blood on your leg and the water made you think of the blood on the floor when you got home and you went into shock. The way the doctor says it, you had a nervous breakdown.” My voice was a little shaky and I really hoped she didn’t hear me say that we told Louis about her mother’s death. Then Claire said, “So how long have I been out for?” I laughed and told her that she wasn’t asleep for more than how long a normal night’s sleep would take. I added I stayed there the whole time and never left the room. I think she realized we had school tomorrow and said, “What about school? We have it tomorrow and if I’m going to have this thing on my leg for at least another week I won’t be able to walk around.” Before I was able to answer the doctor I had spoken too last night came in. I looked at the doctor and figured I should pay attention in case Claire didn’t. He said, “Everything looks exactly the way it did yesterday. Your leg should still need a walking boot, but if it’s longer than a week or not, I don’t know. It will depend on your pain. If you want, you can get your cast off within the hour and we can give you a walking boot that will fit and you’ll be on your way by the end of the day. You also have a small fracture where the glass was in your leg. Harry, it was nice meeting you. “Did you get any of that?” I looked over at Claire a few times when he was talking and she looked totally zoned out. “No.” I laughed and said it was a good thing I was there to hear things she didn’t hear. I told her what the doctor came in to say and waited for her to decide whether she wanted it or not. I wish it was me and not her that had gotten hurt. Claire. She was all I could think about. After a minute Claire decided she wanted the walking boot. I grabbed her hands; they were still cold from being outside last night. I helped her stand up and get into the wheelchair. I gently kissed her on the lips before I pushed her into the hallway. A nurse asked if she would rather have her push Claire but she politely denied them and I rolled her into the surgery room. We had to wait a few minutes before the doctor arrived. He told Claire to lie back on the table and relax. I took Claire’s hand partially for my sake because I didn’t want to let her go; and told her that if she got scared or felt any pain she could squeeze my hand. A line going down the front of the cast was drawn and a mini saw blade was placed along it. The machine was turned on and it sounded like a bus and a motorcycle mixed together into one very loud obnoxious sound. It surprised Claire and I felt her squeeze my hand. I tried my best to stay calm even though it was Claire’s leg and not mine. She turned her head toward me and I mouthed, “I love you.” and she mouthed it too. The doctor was concentrated on her leg and didn’t notice. In no time Claire’s cast was off and we were given different size walking boots for Claire to try on. I helped her keep her balance. I knew she was destined to fall. We laughed and messed around with the different sizes I watched Claire put on. She said each one was uncomfortable and ugly except for the very last one she tried on. It always turns out that way doesn’t it? The last is always the best. It had Velcro strips going around it, it was black, and it was the least ugly; but those are Claire’s words. Once she decided, she gave me a spin and I had another vision. She was in white and I was in a suit. Flower pedals were falling from what seemed like the sky and she looked amazing in her white dress. She cut the vision off with a question, “How do I look?” I said what I’ve been waiting to say since I met her, “I don’t care what you’re wearing. You’ll always be beautiful to me.” I smiled, spun her around, and before I let her fall, I caught her and finished the spin with a kiss. I went up to the desk to sign papers and the bill so Claire wouldn’t have to worry about it. We left and were on our way to the parking lot when Claire thought of the bill and thought out loud to herself, “How am I going to pay for this? I’m going to need another job! Ugh, I’m such a klutz!” I don’t think she noticed she was thinking out loud and I calmed her down by saying, “Don’t worry about it. I’ve got the bills covered. I already paid okay? I just want you to take your time, relax and take it easy for this week okay?” Claire stopped and stared like I had spoken some foreign language. Her eyes grew bigger and brighter than ever before. The flicker of green that appeared once in a while now showed in the sunlight. They were the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen. I stood there amazed at how beautiful she was. Inside and outside, and how she didn’t even realize it. “Wow I… don’t know what to say but thank you. And for you, I will try my hardest to take it easy.” She flashed me a smile but it still didn’t seem like she was going to stay true to her word. She likes to do things she shouldn’t even if it makes her situation worse. We got into the car and Claire said, “I’m sorry for ruining your night.” “Why? No one knew you would hurt yourself. There is nothing to apologize for. The good thing is that you’re okay and I got you here in time.” She really didn’t ruin anything. Even though Claire got hurt, I wouldn’t change the night for the world. Her eyes seemed to be changing color; I looked back at them and now they were a deep brown. The flicker of green that had spread was now a flicker. Deep enough to drown in, and to love.
