Mackenzie's P.O.V

---

I woke up with the sun shining brightly into my room, and quickly sat up and shrieked very loudly. So loud my dad had to come running into my room with a frying pan in his hands, it had been clear he was in the kitchen doing the dishes.

"What's wrong!?" He asked, still panting from being out of breath.

I shook my head and then started to laugh. "Nothing dad! It's not like it's the first day of summer or anything" I said in a quite sarcastic tone and then continued to shriek, in that high pitched voice that could drive anyone crazy.

My dad rolled his eyes, and let a small smile creep onto his face as he left the room. Once he was gone, I grabbed a little black remote beside me and hit the power button turning on the radio. I made sure that the music was blasting. Starting up my daily morning routine; wake up, take a shower, brush teeth all while jamming out to the latest hits. After my shower, I picked out a pair of black shorts and paired it with a blue floral tank top. With my mother dying, I had sorta lost track of all of the latest fashion trends and often let my dad buy whatever he thought was 'cool'.

I was about to head downstairs for breakfast when I heard my phone beep. Meaning I had a new text. I rushed over to the phone, expecting a text from my crush/best friend Sam. My heart skipped a few beats when I read the message. 'Goodmorning! Happy first day of summer, I'll be over in a bit. Hope you're ready for my awesomeness, oh and I have something to tell you! I'm sure you'll freak out and be happy for me when I tell you!' My heart started to skip beats, I had the biggest crush on Sam, and maybe today would be the day that he would 'confess his love for me and we would fall in love'. Yes, I was a dreamer.

With a smile, I walked down the stairs to see my dad in the kitchen, like I had expected him making us a huge breakfast. "Went a little overboard I see?" I laughed and listened to him mocking me. I took a seat on the side of the table, while my dad still sat at the head of the able. Usually, the other head would be occupied by my mother, until a few months ago when she died of 'unknown reasons'. I say it was a heart attack or aneurism. I started to pick at my scrambled eggs as I remember the day as if it were, well yesterday.

"Mom!" I called out as I walked into the house. It was not normal for my mom to be out at this time, and if she had to leave the house. She would have left me a note or texted me. I called out for her again. "Mom!" My voice was slightly more worried. I slipped off my shoes and listened for any response and I could hear some sort of music coming from the upstairs. Just to make sure she was okay, I slowly made my way up to her room. I could hear the shower was running. So I walked into her room "Mom! I'm home okay!" I started to leave the room, knowing she would answer me since the music wasn't playing that loud. But she didn't, and I started to question if she was okay or not.

I walked up to the washroom door and knocked on it once "Mom?!" I slowly turned the knob and heard the shower running. But I saw no body, I walked over to the shower curtain and pulled it back. And there I found her, laying on the bathtub floor, eyes wide open. I quickly check for a pulse, as I yelled out her name over and over again. But there was nothing. I tried to give her CPR while I pulled out my phone from my pocket and dialed 911, but it was clearly too late...

The next few weeks were filled with sorrow and despair, I stayed home a lot. Not wanting to walk down the halls at my school just to hear. "I'm sorry Mackenzie, if there's anything I can do for you, let me know" That was the biggest lie I heard, if you weren't there for me before. Why would this suddenly change. I also remember having to talk to the police a lot, about if my father had ever wanted to kill my mother. To if I knew if she had any mysterious sicknesses that she had ever told my father about. Most of the times, I would zone out and not listen to them. "Mackenzie...? Mac? Hellooo?!"

That's when I came back to reality to see my father snapping his fingers and waving at me "Are you okay?" I shook my head and smiled "Yeah, i was just thinking about something" I started to eat once again and so did my father, for the rest of the meal. We ate in silence, like always...
