4. Chapter Three: Visions

"her arms around my shoulders. I sighed, I would have to get used to this touchy-feely stuff. I heard the other feet behind us speed up.

"Is she okay?" Lyllina said.

"She looks kind of pale," Vaann added.

I shook my head again. "I-I'm fine." I grabbed at my head again as the pain worsened. I squeezed my eyes shut trying to ignore it.

I stopped where I was standing and felt people crashing into me. But I didn't move or react. I was somewhere else now. Before me was a big cliff, the sky beyond it an eerie red. I was alone. I crept to the edge and looked over carefully.

"Hello, Vaann." A voice called from behind me. Vaann? I looked down at my hands and realized, this wasn't me. I was having another vision. They were quite frequent. Always in the eyes of who the vision was based around. My first vision was of Lyllina and then Marissa. Then Vaann and Riley. But lately, they're just of Vaann. I never understood it...

"Who are you? What do you want?" Vaann's voice called out in response. He slowly turned to look at the big man standing before...us? It was the man! The one who took me! I remember him clearly, as he dragged me away in the Ruin City. Luckily my friends came to the rescue.

My friends?

The man’s lips curled up into a smile. "Why, you, of course!"

"Me?" He gasped as the man came at him. My head throbbed as I took in the scene. Another death. Go, I thought to him, run! But of course I was only seeing through his eyes and I couldn’t make him move or anything...

He pulled his knives, only to have them quickly kicked out of his hands. He looked at the man in shock. I tried to block it out, but it didn't work. I yelled out as pain shot through me. Vaann crumbled forward holding his stomach. Move damn it!

I felt my air suddenly cut off as the man wrapped his hands around Vaann's throat. Our hands clawed at the man’s face and arms, trying to regain our oxygen, but failed. The big guy smiled down as we went limp and he released.

The light flooded my eyes as I gasped for breath, grabbing at my throat. Nothing there. I took in all the oxygen my body could allow as I panted. I tried to keep my eyes from Vaann's form as he leaned against the wall watching me, but it was hard. I looked down coughing. I looked around confused; I was on the ground now.

"Here, let me make your pain go away!" Marissa said frowning down at me.

I saw Vaann shake his head. "It's not something you can make go away, Riss. She has visions. Things that may or may not happen." Marissa looked at him. "My sister had them too...”

I looked down sadly. His sister was dead... "Th-they're just dreams. I-It's nothing!" I said with a long sigh.

"No they're not. Don't lie to yourself." Vaann said pushing off the wall to walk over. "You have to tell us what you saw so we can stop them from happening." He said crossing his arms over me.

I closed my eyes and shook my head. "No! It's nothing!"

"If you don't tell us, I'm gunna have to have Lyllina search your mind." He offered.

I thought for a moment, still closing my eyes, holding my head. Did I really want someone going through my brain? It would be easier to tell this one vision then let her see all the other gory ones...

"Alright, I got it." I heard Lyllina say.

"No!" I cried. I opened my eyes and stared up at Vaann. "Him."

He looked back confused. "What about me?"

"Just let me in, it’s easier."

"Chill, Lina, she’s talking." He knelt down in front of me. "Was it about me?"

I nodded and brought my knees to my chest to hide the fact that he was too close. It held me together. "It was you dying. A big guy was choking you." I said grabbing at my throat again.

He pushed my hands away from my throat and stared for a second. "Whoa, crap."

"W-what?" I asked my eyes getting wide.

He looked up at the others. "You see that too right?"

"What is it!" I said starting to panic.

"Hand marks. Like someone was choking you." Riley said sitting next to Vaann.

I sighed and looked down. "Yeah, that’s another thing. It’s not just that I see them... I can FEEL it too... I was seeing through Vaann's eyes but I could feel what was happening to...”

"Here, let me see." Lyllina said stepping closer.

I hissed and jumped up and climbed quickly into a nearby tree. "Why do you want to pick my brain! I told you all I know! I can’t even remember anything else!" I shot at her, holding onto the tree.

I noticed Lyllina had blood on her. Vaann turned to look at her changing the subject. "So, how many were there?"

"About four." She said.

His eyes narrowed slightly. "Shadows don't bleed."

Lyllina shrugged. "Who said it was their blood?"

Vaann shook his head and sighed. Marissa and Riley stood at the bottom of the tree beckoning for me to come down. I jumped down as he spoke. "We better move, come on."

After walking about five miles, Vaann turned to us. "Alright, you guys stay here. Riley and I are gunna walk further ahead." He and Riley then set off. "Watch Kate!"

I glared after him. I didn't need a baby sitter! I sat down with a loud, "Humph!"

"So how long have you been having visions like that?" Marissa asked sitting down beside me.

I looked over at her, unsure. "Since I woke up without any memory."

"You lost your memory?" I nodded. "So, you don't remember having a family or anything?" I shook my head. "Well, that's okay. We can help you get your memory back!" She smiled at me.

Lyllina stood a short distance from us, listening. She cleared her throat. "Hey, Marissa? Can you come heal this, err...wound...on my arm?" She said hesitantly.

"Sure!" Marissa turned back to me and pat my shoulder. "Be right back." She jumped up quickly and ran to Lyllina. I heard them whispering as Marissa observed Lyllina's arms.

I stood very quietly and sneaked off without being noticed. It wasn't bad enough that I had visions, but they never stopped! When I finally reached Vaann and Riley, they were standing by an old building. I stopped next to Riley.

"I thought you might find it useful to know that the army is close." I said.

"How far?" Vaann asked.

"About ten miles, maybe less now. But I think we should go."

“How fast?"

"Uh, I don't know. But pretty fast by what I'm getting." Then I smirked up at him. "I kind of miss being normal. It wasn't such a headache."

He smiled down at me. "See? Told you being normal wasn't so bad." Then he shrugged. "But what can you do? Go back and get the others and bring them here." He said following after Riley, who looked in a daze.

I ran back quickly to where Marissa and Lyllina were. "Hey guys?"

Lyllina looked up. "Don't leave the group! Do you want to die-"

"Uh the army is like seven miles away. We need to go. Now!" I said turning to run back to Riley and Vaann. "Follow me!"

I heard them follow behind me keeping up easily. Vaann was waiting for us with Riley. I stopped in front of them.

"Kate, get them to a safe place."

"What about you?" I wondered.

He looked over at Riley. "I'm gunna stay with her." He looked to Lyllina. "Watch them; make sure they don't do anything stupid."

"Why am I the babysitter?" She mumbled.

I held my head focusing, trying to get any vision to help. Somewhere safe. I saw a flash of shadows. Not ones with wings. Ones without. Those were bad at climbing. But trees were big enough. They'd find a way. Somewhere high...

I opened my eyes and smiled. "We'll be in the mountains!" I said taking off toward the cliffs right by us.

"The mountains?" Marissa asked dumb founded.

"Yeah, why is that a problem?"

"I'm not the biggest fan of heights, but I'll deal." Marissa laughed breathlessly.

"Well good." I said as I reached the rocks and began climbing. "Up we go!"

After climbing for a while, I came across a ledge. I peeked my head over to get a good look and gasped "Here! This is what I saw!" I said climbing in. I turned around to help the other two in. "You guys okay?" I said as they both went as far from the ledge as possible. Marissa looked slightly green.

"Yeah," Marissa sighed. "As long as I don’t look down."

"I'm okay." Lyllina nodded.

I sat down at the very edge, my feet dangling down. I looked all around taking everything in. It all looked destroyed and dead. I couldn’t help but wish I could remember what it looked like before. I’m sure it was nothing like this... I saw a movement flicker across the dead trees by a crumbled part of the building.

"Hey, I can see them from here!" I laughed. But then I looked out again and my frown disappeared. The army...

"I hate being up high!" Marissa said from behind me.

I turned to smile at her. "I like the feeling of being up high."

I turned back to look and noticed Riley duck behind a big chunk of ruble that hid her as she pulled Vaann down too and they disappeared just as the army flooded the area. Riley was making an illusion! I watched as the shadows ran around searching and people stood talking right by where the others sat. I gasped and flipped to lie on my stomach and peek over the ledge as not to be seen. If I focused hard enough I could see the outlines of Riley and Vaann rippling through the illusion. Good job, Riley! I smiled to myself.

I saw their rippling figures stand and move slightly away from the wall and through a crack. They slowly and quietly made their way closer to us.

"Come on..." I whispered in anticipation. "I wish I knew what was happening!" I whispered angrily.

"You can look with me. And see through Vaann's eyes." Lyllina called to me.

I crawled over to her and sat down. "Really?" In reply she held out a hand to me, which I took gladly. I gasped as the new sight appeared to me. It was eerily like my visions. I almost dropped her hand, but I really wanted to make sure they were okay.

I saw them appear toward the bottom of the cliff and let go to scramble to the edge and look down. Riley had already started climbing. Vaann looked up and motioned for me to stay quiet. I nodded and helped Riley inside. I looked back and saw a figure standing in the shadow of the trees. Who was that? I wondered squinting toward the figure. Vaann swiftly climbed the ledge and into our hiding spot. I looked over to see Lyllina's eyes flood a white color and then turn black. I went to ask Vaann if she was okay, but a light thud sounded. I looked to see a boy standing there. The boy had spikey black hair with red highlights. I saw his crimson eyes light up as he smiled with sharpened teeth. He wore black skinny jeans and a red V-neck with red converse.

I extended my claws, "Who is he?"

Vaann held out a warning hand. "Don't upset him." I relaxed for a second watching them stare off.

The boy ignored my move. "You’re still alive?"

"What of it?" Vaann said in a hard voice.

"You're supposed to be dead!"

"Aw, did I disappoint you?" I saw Vaann's hand twitch toward one of his knives.

I saw Riley watching and grabbed her wrist pulling her to the side. "Riley, make a veil around us!" I saw Lyllina jump up off the cliff only to hear the screeching of shadows down below. Riley looked at me and shook her head. I growled in exasperation. If she didn’t, she at least needed to be somewhere safe! I dragged her to the edge. "Go find somewhere to hide!"

"No! I want to stay here!" She said crossing her arms stubbornly.

I felt my eyes turn red as I hissed, "Go or I will throw you down!" I smiled as Riley mumbled and began climbing. I followed behind her and climbed under the ledge so I was hanging upside down. I felt like I was experiencing zero gravity! I saw Lina scale the mountain quickly and peek over the edge to watch. I did the same. The boy pulled a rather large blade out from his back and took a fighting stance. Vaann quickly pulled his knives with a smirk.

Vaann ran at full speed and bashed his shoulder into the boy who flew back into the rocks. He jumped up quickly and swung the sword out with a growl. Vaann's eyes widened and he jumped over the blade with a gasp. He smiled landing easily and quickly flipped, kicking him in the jaw. Vaann pulled out his bow and loaded an arrow, releasing quickly. The kid shouted as the arrow sunk into his shoulder. He ripped it out as Vaann neared the edge.

"Fight to live another day, sir!" Vaann said with a quick backflip off the cliff. I jumped down alongside him, fighting off as many shadows as I could. "Kate, you clear this up and get the General and Lieutenant. C-109 is mine!"

I nodded to Vaann as he veered left. "Alright, bring it." I sighed to myself. I froze, and I saw Vaann fly into a tree in my head. He was unconscious. Perfect. I felt someone grab me from behind and I squealed. "Eek!"

"Kate!" Lyllina called fighting her way toward me.

I growled and bit down on the hands that held me. He cried out and dropped me. I fell and rolled onto my knees and got to my feet quickly. He was recovering himself as I extended my claws and dove. I ripped his throat out in one chunk before he knew what hit him. I smiled down at his lifeless corpse before I saw my vision again. I gasped. Vaann was in trouble!
