20. Chapter Nineteen: Complications

My deep purple gown sparkled as Damien spun me in time with the crowd. The ruffles of my gown flowed just above the ground. My dark hair fell in elegant curls down my back. Damien gave me a smile as he lifted me high and brought me back to the ground. As we twirled again, I caught sight of my Mother. She was smiling as she watched the dancers, the bright sea of colors. I followed her gaze to my sister. She was dancing with a masked man. Though, she was masked herself. I didn't wear a mask today. I felt no need. But who was this stranger?

I pulled away from Damien as the stranger spun away from us toward the corner. I made my way across the floor to them. They were free of masks now. The man was blonde with blue eyes. He looked so familiar it hurt. Why was he so familiar? Why did this vision come to me now? I could feel my anger burning as he drew Kate in for a kiss. I pulled at the fabric at my waist. It pulled off in my hand revealing the short skin tight purple pants beneath it. I yanked my knife from the sheath at my thigh. Always good to have battles clothes and weapons at the ready.

I ran through the remaining people and kicked out my foot at the man. He pulled from Kate, flying back into a vase of flowers. Some couples stopped to stare. Others were still twirling. Kate gasped looking to me. Damien came crashing through the crowd and stopped to take in the scene.

"Vaann!" Kate said rushing toward his crumbled form. I nodded to Damien who pulled at Kate, keeping her from him. "Let me go! Damien, please!"

I stepped toward Vaann, fingering the sharp tip of my knife. I smiled as he twitched a bit. He sat up, pushing the glass off of him. "Hello, Blue Eyes."

He stood up with a flinch. "Dammit." He froze when he looked to Damien. "Let her go..." He said demandingly.

"Take her away," I told Damien. "I'll take care of our cute friend."

"No!" Kate began to struggle as Damien pulled her away. "Anisa, don't hurt him! Let go!"

I stepped in front of Vaann as he attempted to follow. "Don't you hurt her!" He shouted looking defeated.

"Vaann!" Kate cried out.

Vaann's eyes came to me. "Let me calm her, at least. Then you can do what you please with me."

"Fine." I sighed. "Damien, wait. Step away a moment."

Damien stopped to look at me. He nodded and stepped back. Kate hurled herself into Vaann's arms. He shushed her, patting her hair. He took her face in her hands, shushing her until she looked up quietly.

"I'll be back, I won't be far. Damien is just going to take you to your room." Vaann told her.

Kate gripped his wrists, staring up at him with sad eyes. "I don't want you to go. I want you to stay here with me. Please." She begged breathlessly.

"I'll come back for you, Kate Thorne. I promise." Vaann said leaning down to kiss her forehead.

I saw Kate whisper a broke I love you before hugging Vaann. He gave her a halfhearted smile as he watched her go back to Damien.

"It's cruel to lie to a woman." I said stepping next to him.

"She'll get over it," he said not moving his gaze. He shivered as I raised my knife to the back of his shirt, ripping slowly across the shoulder. The white of his shirt was quickly replaced with red as the wound began to bleed. I smirked and moved the fabric out of the way bringing my lips to his skin. I felt him shudder as I slowly licked away the blood. "But she'll hate you, you know." He said between his teeth, trying to keep the pain from his voice. I smiled as the blade caressed his throat.

"I know," and with a flick of my wrist, I ended his life. "But she'll get over it." I giggled a bit as I quoted him, licking his blood from my fingers.

 Riley's POV:

"We need to go," Kate said staring at the spot Vion had been standing just a second ago.

"Yes," I gave a small nod in agreement as I clung onto Kane, not sure what else to do.

"Kate," Lyllina said walking toward us, "start leading them around the Army. I'll follow behind." I looked to Kate. She was still in her little daze. "Go now!"

Kate looked to Lina and nodded. She motioned to the others who gathered around quickly. I saw the new boy back up. Kate beckoned to him but he shook his head.

"I'll try to hold them off." He said. Without another word, he ran in the opposite direction. Kate's face scrunched as she saw a vision. I saw her eyes tear up a bit. The boy wouldn't be coming back and I knew it. He was losing his life to fend for us. Kate watched after him for another second before looking back to us with determined eyes.

With her free hand that wasn't occupied by me, Kate reached to grab Marissa's hand. Duo hovered right behind her. She pulled us along quickly, rushing just a bit. I peeked over my shoulder, meeting Duo's gaze for a fraction of a second. His whole structure was singing with something close to overprotection-no, maybe it was more like possessiveness. But possessive of what? I looked passed his strong facade to glance behind him. No one seemed to be following us. The smallest movement in the treetops caught my eye. I could see Lina following us from a few yards behind us. I could see her lips moving, her eyes locked steadily with mine, but her words were inaudible. I could barely hear over the sound of my own heart racing.

The sudden snap of a twig sent my heart into my throat as I let out a low squeal. I flinched as I stared ahead of us. Rustling leaves sent my heart thrumming, beating against my chest like it would break out of my rib cage. I crushed myself into Kate's arm, trying to keep calm.

"You okay, Riley?" I looked up to see Kate examining me with those big pretty blue eyes of hers. I could hear the concern in her voice as she rushed us on. I could feel Duo's gaze burning into the side of my face.

Another snap, I squealed. I flinched into Kate's arm again. "So many scary sounds!" I whimpered.

"Its okay, Riley!" Marissa's voice drifted to me from the other side of Kate. Her voice was soft, gentle, comforting. "Think happy thoughts!"

"L-Like the animals safe?" I asked hopefully.

"Yes, like the animals safe," the sound of a smile was clear in her voice. Kate pulled her hand from Marissa's to rub my arm gently to comfort me. I gave her a smile as I slowly released her arm.

"Really?" I grinned as I let go, my thoughts drifting slightly. I felt Duo nudge me subtly to speed my up.

I peeked around Kate to give Marissa a grateful smile. I saw her make a face, somewhere between impatience and security. "Riley, Lina said to put an illusion up but keep moving."

I stared at her in shock for a second. "That'll be hard, but I'll try." I held my hand out to Kate. She grabbed on tight as everyone else latched on. I let my eyes slowly close as Kate led me along, taking a deep, cleansing breath. My head felt slightly tingly as a world of colors fluttered like a butterfly behind my eyelids. Without opening my eyes, I watched the Army blur by. Their darkness was very noticeable inside the bright colors. I felt a sigh of relief go through the group as they passed.

We were safe...

 Kate's POV:

I sat in the middle of our small clearing. The group had set up camp just after the Army had passed. We couldn't go far; Riley was totally drained after the big illusion she had to make. My vision had been right. The boy never came back. He had been swept away with the ocean of Shadows. I had been about to go after him and find him, but I knew it was too late. He was long gone by now. So, instead I went to work on setting the camp fire. It was nearly dark now. I smiled when the flames appeared, washing their warmth against my skin.

"I hate this," I muttered, talking out loud. "Always on the run."

Riley's reply made me jump. I hadn't expected an answer. "Hey, at least it's new scenery!" She peeked up at Lina who was asleep in a tree. My eyes followed her gaze.

"I'm more of a stay-in-one-place kind of girl." I gave an uneasy laugh as I brought my gaze back to her.

"I'm more of a love-all-life-forms kind of girl," Riley giggled back making me smile. Duo smiled a bit too, watching us from across the fire.

"That's good." I said fingering the new braid.

Riley swatted at my hands quickly. "Don't do that! You'll ruin my work!"

"Sorry," I said dropping my hands. I peeked over at Duo with a small smile.

Riley suddenly sat forward leaning on her hands for support. "Deti, do you think Kane is pretty?"

"Riley!" I felt my eyes grow wide as my cheeks got hot.

I saw Duo's eyes flicker from Riley to me and then down as he comprehended the meaning of her words. His cheeks turned a light pink, I almost didn't notice it. "Yes."

"Oh, so you both have sunburns? It looks like Deti's isn't harsh though." Her face was a bit puzzled as she looked back and forth between Duo and I. Then she turned and smiled at me. "See? What'd I tell you?"

"Why'd you do that?" I asked, my cheeks still burning. Duo looked down hiding his face.

"Kane, your sunburn is acting up again!" Riley giggled.

"No, it's n-not!" I quickly brought my knees to my chest, hiding my face.

Riley was quiet for a moment before she spoke. "Are you having face problems? Any acne? Why are you hiding you faces? And simultaneously, too!"

I could hear Sebastian’s voice, but it sounded like it was coming through a tunnel. "Nothing is wrong."

"Hmm... No weird substance. Yup! Nothing's wrong. But I don't know about you."

I looked up, knowing she meant me. "What?"

Duo made a face before shaking his head. "Why do people always poke my nose?"

Riley stared down at her hands, thinking. "Hmm... Okay... Kane: major sunburn, knee problems, needs bubbles, has rash. Deti: Minor sunburn, disability to realize, needs bubbles. Both: needs hugs!"

I stared at her in confusion. "I don't have a rash. Or knee problems. What are you talking about?"

"Your knees are bent and glued to your chest; knee problems. Rash because your ears also turned red. Major sunburn rash."

"I told you Riley. Its blush not sunburn," I felt myself blush and look away.

"Since when?" She asked.

"Since forever."

"I can realize, thank you!" Duo said crossing his arms.

"Realize that you are adored by me?" Riley said in a sing song voice. I peeked at her for a second. "No!" My gaze followed hers to Duo.

I saw him freeze with sudden stress. "Err..."

"Exactly! You need fruv!" She said with a nod.

He made a face, it was somewhere between confusion and a grimace. "I need what now?"

"Fruv, friend love! And you get it from me!" Riley said confidently.

"Oh.... I knew that..." Duo said with a pout. I smiled a bit, listening quietly.

"Sure you did," Riley giggled. "Besides, you already have somebody, so I'll let her have you."

Duo did a double take, his eyebrows pulling down in confusion. "I have someone?" He shook his head, his forehead creased with worry lines. "I'm afraid you're mistaken..."

"The Riley," she said emphasizing each word slowly, "is never mistaken." Riley suddenly took my hand and Duo's hand. She pulled us together until he and I were hand in hand. I felt the necklace burn against my skin. I blinked in shock. I felt my cheeks get hot as I met Duo's confused gaze. "You make the perfect pair." I saw blood rush into Duo's cheeks at her words. "There's no denying it. Look into each others eyes for a minute, and then tell me how you feel."

"I-I'll pass..." Duo said glancing away almost at the same time as me. I slowly pulled my hand from his, feeling my hand tingle slightly.

Riley yanked my head back at the same time as Duo's. She almost seemed to growl in frustration. She was forcing us to look. Duo gave a small 'hey!'. Riley held our faces toward each other. "I'll just talk to you separately!" When we both tried to look away again, her voice got soft. "Just look, both of you. I'm tired of you two not noticing it anymore."

"Not noticing what?" I demanded.

"I don't notice anythi- Sebastian; you were never one to notice..." Duo sighed.

Riley threw her hands up in exasperation. "I can't take it anymore!" She pointed a finger at me causing me to blink. "You're always looking at him! And you," she said pointing to Duo, "I can tell by your face that you like her!" I looked down quickly trying to hide my face. "There you go again!" I heard Duo mutter something under his breath, something I didn't quite catch.

I looked up to him raising my eyebrows. "What was that?"

"Nothing," he said turning away.

"O-okay..." I said looking down discouraged.

Riley suddenly jumped up, taking Duo's hand and yanking with all her might. "Come on, if you're not going to talk to each other, I will talk to you one on one."

"Um, okay." Duo said allowing her to pull him to his feet. He began to walk toward the distorted tree line.

Riley gave me a big smile before fisting the air. "Commencing Operation Riley-go!" She said running after him.

I could still hear them as clearly as if they were right next to me. I wished I couldn't. I closed my eyes and tried to tune them out, but it was hard.

"What is going on exactly?" Duo asked. I could hear everything, from the WOOSH of the wind to the bugs crawling on the dead leaves. I could also hear Duo shifting his weight uneasily from one foot to the other.

"Ai  desu!" Riley said with a small clap.

"You're confusing me, love." Duo's British accent commented. I stared at the fire as I sighed.

"It's Japanese for 'love'." The confidence in her voice was practically ringing.

All of a sudden, the atmosphere felt thick as Duo went into a small panic. "Love? No, no, you have me all wrong!" I laid back to stare at the stars.

"Why?" Riley asked in shock.

He was silent for a moment. When he spoke, he sounded broken, almost lost. "It isn't possible for someone like me to love."

"May you tell me why?"

"Look at us," he said in desperation. "And by us, I don't mean Kate and me. I mean Demetrius and me. We are two people."

Riley sighed, "So, Seba and Demi. Do you feel the same way about Kane?"

Sebastian answered first, "No."

"Yes," Demetrius said.

They paused a moment.

"Yes," Sebastian said.

"No," Demetrius finished.

Riley laughed, probably shaking her head. It seemed like a legit Riley reaction. "Okay, one at a time. Seba?"

"God, I don't know, I can't read his mind!" Sebastian growled in annoyance.

"What the hell..." I whispered closing my eyes.

"Demi?" Riley asked.

"He does read minds," Demetrius continued.

"Demi..." Riley said, urging him to speak.

I sighed and tried to sit up, anticipating his answer. My braid got caught on something, yanking my head back. "Owowow!" I yelled pulling forward until the braid came out. I held my head in pain.

I felt Duo's eyes flicker and land on me. "I like her, okay?"

"Now how about you, Seba?" Riley said a grin clear in her voice. I heard Sebastian, too busy laughing to answer. "No! My braid!"

I looked up in a panic. "It wasn’t me, I swear!" I said hiding my head quickly.

Through the veil of my hair around my face, I saw Riley cover her head in shame. "All my work... for nothing... I've failed..."

Sebastian continued laughing. "Wow, fail!" Riley didn't respond. I lifted my head to look around, only to find a bug in my hair. I screamed and spazzed out, messing up my hair in an attempt to get rid of the insect. I fell back with a thud. Duo laughed even harder. "I need a camera, dammit!" I scrambled into a nearby tree, clutching onto the trunk like it was my life support. "Wow, guys!"

"What?!" I gasped. "Excuse me if I have a phobia of bugs!"

"Haha... girls..." Duo said with a light roll of his eyes.

"All my work for nothing..." Riley just barely whispered. I hopped from the tree, landing on all fours like a cat. I ran at Riley, grabbing her up in a hug. "Are-are my efforts wasted?" She asked.

I pulled a hand away keeping one arm around her as I gave her a pat on the head. "No! So, what was so important that you had to drag Duo away?"

Realization seemed to dawn on her and she pushed out of my hug. She placed one hand on her hip, the other extended to point toward the fire. "You aren't allowed to be here! Chatting zone only!"

I took a small step back, a bit surprised. "Well then, fine!" I glowered as I stomped back to the fire and plopped back down in the dirt.

When Riley was sure I wasn't listening, I heard her turn back to Duo. "Seba, do you like her?"

"Why do you keep asking? Jeez!"

"Just answer, Sebastian!"

"Fine, yes."

I held my breath as Riley spoke. "Thank you for cooperating. I am done with you. Stay put." I could hear her walking toward me. I looked up at her when she was standing over me. "Do you like Demi?"

I felt blush creep to my cheeks at her forwardness. "Huh?"

"I will say this slowly," she said kneeling down in front of me. "Do. You. Like. Demi?"

I blinked, "Yes."

"Do you like Seba?"

I clutched tight onto Vaann's necklace. "Yes."

"Good!" She said with a nod of her head. She gave her hands another light clap. "It's settled then." She waltzed over to her spot by Marissa and cuddle up, getting comfortable. She was asleep in seconds.

"Goodnight, Riley." I whispered with a small smile. I reached up carefully and attempted to fix my hair. I knew I wasn't getting anywhere anytime soon, so I gave up easily. "Useless hair." I sighed and reached over to grab two water bottles before walking over to where Duo sat, alone. "I think she finished her rant. You can come back over." I leaned down to place the water bottle in front of him.

He stared at it for a second before looking up to me. "She told me to stay put," he huffed as he crossed his arms, pouting like a child.

I laughed and rolled my eyes before making my way back to the fire. I laid back to stare at the stars as the fire began to die out. It wasn't long before sleep took over.
