Rescue Me

Lia has lived in the slums of Rio, Brazil all her life and when Lia steals from a shop one night, two boys chase her and pin her to the ground. But what Lia doesn't realise is that this one Irish boy with kind blue eyes will be the one to show her new things and teach her about the world. Maybe even teach her about love.

4. The Market

I smile and take Iva's hand as I lead her out of the door. We tumble down the narrow paths as a stray dog chases us from behind. Laughing, we fly down the steep hill and stop when we reach the street. She chats none stop about nonsence and about the boy in the village who asked her to play with him yesterday. I listen half-heartedly as I gaze around the streets, looking for the boy.

“Look, Lia!” Her high voice squeals as she points at a man holding a guitar as he leans against a stall filled with hand made nick-naks. He strums it and sings in his deep voice. We stop and listen along with a small group of other people.

“Alexia!” The man says, spotting me in the crowd. Then it clicks.

“Uncle Luiz!” I throw my arms around his neck and breath in the scent of his cigars.

“I believe it's little Jelly's birthday today, is that right?” He asks as he lets go of me and hugs Iva. She laughs and plays with the slightly rusted strings on his guitar.

“Do you still play, Lia?” He looks up at me, the blue eyes he shares with my mother gleaming.

“A little,” I gush and a small boy shouts out from the group of people around us.

“Play for us!” He shouts and the people nod in agreement. I blush and Uncle Luiz hands the guitar to me. Shyly, I grip the instrument and place the tethered strap around my kneck; beginning to strum the chords to one of the songs that I know.

“I met him last summer at the beach,

it was forty degrees and he smiled at me.” I start to walk around, strumming as I go.

“I felt my stomach ping as he walked right over,

his blue eyes shining in the light.” Uncle Luiz starts clapping along to the beat and soon enough, the whole crowd are clapping; some dancing with each other as I sing.
