Rescue Me

Lia has lived in the slums of Rio, Brazil all her life and when Lia steals from a shop one night, two boys chase her and pin her to the ground. But what Lia doesn't realise is that this one Irish boy with kind blue eyes will be the one to show her new things and teach her about the world. Maybe even teach her about love.

13. Little Things

**Lia's P.O.V**

“The boys are all really nice,” I tell Niall as he walks me home.

“Yeah, they like you.” He smiles down at me and I stroke my hair behind my ear. The sun is painted across the sky in a whirl of reds, oranges and purples. I love sunsets. They were Nature's miracles.

“Jelly won't stop talking about Harry,” I say and Niall chuckles.

“Yeah, she likes him doesn't she.” A twinkle forms in his eyes and I nod.

“Definitely, she doesn't really talk to anyone aside from me, our mum and a few girls in the village.” I look out at the ocean beside us as we cross past the beach.

“I wish I could take you with us,” He mutters to himself and I look up at him, confused.

“Where?” I ask.

“Oh...” He rubs the back of his neck.

“Back to England.” Niall shrugs and my heart skips.

“Why?” I frown at him and he stops us on the pavement beside the beach.

“I hate seeing you living like you do, no one should have to suffer like that.” His blue eyes are intense as he looks down at me.

“Well I've lived like 'that' all my life and I’m not about to leave and drop everything. I've built my life up here, Niall. I survive. We survive. I don't need your charity.” I have no idea why I got so defensive... he was just trying to be nice. I turn on my heel and run the rest of the way home.

“Lia?” My mother's concerned voice asks me as I rush in to the door. I don't answer her, I just run in to my room and lay down on my springy mattress, staring up at the ceiling until night takes over.

I wake up to the gentle sound of someone singing. I open my eyes and sit up, my top sticking to my body. I pull my hair in to a rough plait at the side of my head and glance out of the small hole in the wall that acts as a window. I look out but I can't see anyone. It's just then that I notice a boy sitting straight underneath my window. His blonde hair sticking up. I lie back down and close my eyes once more, listening to his beautiful voice. At some point I drift off and when I wake up again, a strange smell intoxicates my room. I sit up, the silence grappling me. I can hear the sound of the city in the background, far down the mountain. The warm sun heats my skin and I glance around my small room. I spot a black box with a star printed on the top of it. I crawl across my bed towards it and pick it up. I lift the lid and buried under sheets of tissue lies a pair of shoes. Converse. I pick up the black shoes and slip one on to my foot, smiling at the comfort. I hated him for this. He shouldn't be spending money on me. I slip the other one on and tuck the laces in to the sides as I have no idea how to tie them.

“Mum? Jelly?” I call out, stretching my arms as I walk in to the living room.

“Mum?” I repeat but I'm answered by silence. I groan as my stomach begins to rumble. I walk over to the tiny room that acts as a fridge and take out a piece of bread that my Uncle Luiz brought me and Jelly from the market. I munch on it as I walk out of the house, heading down the dirt paths. I'm taken aback by how... quiet it is. I furrow my eyebrows as I gaze around at the empty houses. What the hell? I reach the end of the dirt track and gape at the huge crowd of people taking over the main road. A stage has been set up in the center, the road blocked off by police cars and vans. I watch as the crowd cheer and scream as five figures step on to the stage. I walk slowly towards, finishing the bread. I swallow as I reach the edge of the sea of people. Slowly, I push my way through and weave through the crowd.

“That's what makes you beautiful!” The last line of the song rings out and the crowd erupts in to applause. I make my way to the very front and my eyes wide out when I spot the figures.

“Niall?” I ask myself, spotting him on the stage. A man with a head set on hands him a guitar and he takes it, smiling. He sits on the edge of the stage, strumming softly. The rest of the boys all come nearer to the stage and Niall begins to speak in to the microphone attached to his head.

“This is called Little things and it was written by a good friend of mine,” Niall's accent tiggles his words and he scans the crowd as if he's looking for something, or someone. Zayn begins to sing and the crowd quietens down. His voice is beautiful. So are the rest.

“You'll never love yourself half as much as I love you,” Niall's blue eyes land on mine and a smile plays at his lips as he sings. He finishes the song, his eyes on me the whole time.

“I'd like to tell everyone how amazing a friend of mine is.” Niall says in to the microphone and the rest of the boys make 'Ooo' and Louis coughs 'Lia', sending Harry in to fits of laughter.

“Lia, come up here!” He waves me up to the stage and I shake my head, blushing.

“Aw come on,” Liam says and begins to chant.

“Lia, Lia, Lia!” Soon, the whole crowd is chanting so I finally smile and step up towards the stage. Niall offers me his hand and I take it. He pulls me up and I brush off my tattered shorts. A woman from the side of the stage hands me a beautiful guitar and I feel the strings lightly.

“Ready?” Niall whispers, his breath hot on my cheek.

“Ready,” I smile back, meeting his blue eyes.
