Rescue Me

Lia has lived in the slums of Rio, Brazil all her life and when Lia steals from a shop one night, two boys chase her and pin her to the ground. But what Lia doesn't realise is that this one Irish boy with kind blue eyes will be the one to show her new things and teach her about the world. Maybe even teach her about love.

3. Jelly

“Lia! Lia!” My younger sister, Iva shouts as she bounds through the doorway into my room. She bounces on my mattress, the strings squeaking with the extra weight.

“What?” I ask, opening my heavy eyes.

“It's my birthday! It's my birthday!” She sings, dancing around the room.

“Happy birthday, jelly.” I say, smiling widely at her as I sit up on the mattress.

“Will you take me to the market, Lia?” She asks, excitement filling her beautiful big eyes. I smile at my four year old sister before picking her up and spinning her around.

“Of course I will, jelly.” I laugh as she squeals in enjoyment.

“I'm going to go get dressed!” She exclaims, running out of the room as fast as she entered. I suddenly remember her bracelet and a shiver ascends on my body despite the warm summer air surrounding me. I pull my dark wavy hair in to a high ponytail with a hair band and let it trail down my back. I pull on my tattered denim shorts and faded red bikini top, looking at my reflection in the cracked mirror that hangs on my wall. I sigh and try to smile, doing my best to ignore the scratches and bruises that cover my face and arms as well as the large purple bruise forming on my back.

“Iva!” I call out as I enter the living room.

“I'm here,” She replies, running up to me.

“I have something for you,” I smile at her as I bend down to her height. Her eyes sparkle as I hand her the bracelet.

Thank you, thank you!” She screams as she jumps up and down, wiggling her bum in a little celebratory dance. I laugh at her as my mother walks in and spots her.

“Mummy!” She exclaims and throws her arms around my mother. She lifts her up, spinning her around and planting a kiss on her forehead.

“Happy birthday, my jelly.” She smiles warmly at her and Iva shows her the bracelet.

“Oh wow!” She gushes, winking at me. I try to muster a smile at her.

“Can Lia take me to the market today, mummy?” Iva asks, innocently looking up at my mother.

“Of course,” She replies, wrinkles forming in the corner of her eyes as she shoots me a look.
