Rescue Me

Lia has lived in the slums of Rio, Brazil all her life and when Lia steals from a shop one night, two boys chase her and pin her to the ground. But what Lia doesn't realise is that this one Irish boy with kind blue eyes will be the one to show her new things and teach her about the world. Maybe even teach her about love.

14. Empty

“Jelly?!” I shout out, walking in to her room. I find it empty and I sigh.

“Jelly, stop playing games and come out. We need to get berries.” My voice grows angry and I take a deep breath. We hadn't eaten properly in days and my mother was beginning to grow ill. She refused to eat before we did so she was slowly getting weaker and weaker. Even weaker than usual.

“Jelly!” I shout, my voice echoing on the mud walls of the small room.

“Lia?” A familiar accent calls out. I smile at his voice. It's been two days since their concert and I was receiving smiles from everyone around the village and even in the city. A business man even nodded at me yesterday afternoon.

“What's wrong?” Niall appears in the door way, his blonde hair messy from sleep. It's barely seven in the morning and I'm surprised to see him up this early.

“I can't find Jelly,” I state, not telling him why I need her so badly.

“Where could she have gone?” He asks, glancing out of the window across the city.

“I have no idea,” I shake my head and step back in to the living room, Niall on my heels.

“Where's your mother?” He asks and I bite my lip.

“Erm...” I stutter, trying to think of an answer.

“She's... She's asleep.” I nod, checking the cupboard. Even though I know it's empty. I sigh and close the doors. Niall's hand comes down on my shoulder and he turns my body to face his.

“Where is she?” He repeats, his blue eyes intense.

“She...” There's no point in lying to him anymore. I take a deep breath and look down.

“She's too weak so she's in bed.” Tears form in my eyes and I mentally kick myself for being so emotional infront of him.

“Niall?” I ask as he flees from my house.

“Niall?” I shout as I watch him disappear down the dirt track. I wipe my eyes and sniff, heading back in to the house.

“Lia?” A voice asks and I spin around.

“Louis?” I say, spotting Iva on his back.

“Iva!” I excalim, flapping my arms around.

“Where have you been?” I demand, she grins at me as Louis puts her down.

“Louis took me to the beach,” She smiles admiringly at him and he ruffles her dark hair.

“Sorry I didn't tell you, Lia. You were asleep and I didn't want to wake you up.” Louis shrugs with a small smile, plopping down on to one of the ancient chairs.

“Urgh,” I huff out, sitting down on the seat next to him and burying my face in my hands.

“What's wrong?” He asks, eyeing me suspiciously.

“Niall's just dissapeared to god knows where and I need to go out but I can't incase he comes back.” I run my hand through my hair and Iva begins to play with a doll on the floor infront of me and Louis.

“Go out, I'll wait here and i'll tell him you've gone when he gets back.” Louis tells me and I nod, unsure.

“He will be back, Lia.” He assures me and I smile, standing up.

“Be good,” I tell Iva as I wave and walk out of the door; glancing at the dark room in which my mother's weak body lies. I grab the continuously empty basket from the floor and rush across to the berry tree. I hop across the river and my heat squeezes at the thought of me and Niall messing around. I was so sure he was going to kiss me.

Stop it.

I tell myself, shaking my head before laughing at my own expense. I sound like a giddy school girl. I glance up at the berry tree and once again, it's fruitless. Sighing, I turn and look around; hoping to spot some source of food. Instead, I see Niall running back up the hill.
