Rescue Me

Lia has lived in the slums of Rio, Brazil all her life and when Lia steals from a shop one night, two boys chase her and pin her to the ground. But what Lia doesn't realise is that this one Irish boy with kind blue eyes will be the one to show her new things and teach her about the world. Maybe even teach her about love.

2. Boys

My heart hammers in my chest as I go to grab the bracelet. I pull back immediately as a group of five boys stroll in to the small shop. They're chatting noisily amongst themselves and I wait for them to look at something on the other side of the shop. I take my chance and swiftly grab the bracelet.

Hey!” A male voice booms as I rush out of the shop at a sprint. My bare feet crunch against the rough gravel of the pavement. Tears escape my eyes as I realise what i've done. I have never stolen before. Ever. I look behind me, breathing a sigh of relief as the dark street is empty. I pull the bracelet from my pocket and examine the shiny stone that glints in the moonlight. Before I know what's happening, my face collides with the pavement. I cry out in pain as the delicate skin on my bare stomach and arms scrape across the floor. The pain stings and zips up my entire body.

Give it to me!” A voice commands, the person's weight pushing down on my back. Tears continue down my cheeks as I grip the bracelet with all my force. I begin to shake my head and the person pushes down on my back even harder, causing my lungs to be constricted of air. I try to breath, to scream, to do something. But I can't. More tears escape as I close my eyes and wait for the comfort of unconscious. Atleast I won't have to feel what the person is going to do to me.

“Harry!” A second voice exclaims as I struggle to remain conscious.

“Let her go!” It shouts, pounding closer.

“Harry!” It repeats and the weight of the person is released from my back. I gasp and splutter, my head heavy and stuffy. I try to stand up but my legs give way from the shortage of oxygen but strong arms grip me before I can fall to the floor for a second time tonight.

“Are you alright, love?” A pair of bright blue eyes appear before my own and I try to focus on the boy's face.

“I'm fine,” I reply, coughing before trying to escape from the boy's arms.

“Wait!” He exclaims, his accent... I'd never heard one like it before.

I have to go....” I say again, running towards the mountains. My breathing is hard and fast as I enter my home. Candles light up the room and my mother glances at me from the chair where she sits with a pad and a pencil in her hand. She curiosuly takes me in and as her eeys adjust to the dark, she gasps. The pad and pencil fly to the ground as she bustels me in to her arms.

“Oh, Lia! What happened?” She kisses my forehead before assessing me over with her eyes.

“I...” I start and look away from her.

“I tripped on my way up to the house.” I mumble, my thoughts still on the boy with the strange accent. What if he found me again? What would he do? My chest quivers at the thought of it. My mother doesn't look convinced but she leads me to my bed anyway. I collapse on to the single dirty mattress that lays on the floor of my small room; barely big enough for three people to lay down in.

“Stay here whilst I get you a tissue,” She says quietly, wiping my hair away from my forehead. I nod as I lay and look at the dark ceiling. My eyes drift shut and I fall asleep with the thought of his blue eyes in my mind.
