4. Chapter 4

We aren’t given a chance to say goodbye to our families. I start to think over and over in my head, what would I have said to them, what would I have done. It think of my younger sister. She still has a few years before she can be considered for the hunger games. I shut my eyes. I wish that she will never have to go through that. Then my thoughts turn to Lotta, she got her wish. Danny stares at me.

“You ok?”

I nod, but don’t say anything. He knows what I’m thinking.

“Well, it’s been a big, big day for you two” says Effie taking a seat next to me in the car.

We nod and stay silent.

She gets the message and doesn’t say another word as we drive towards the train.

We whiz past the remainder of district four and areas that I never even knew existed. I think how much more I could have done if I wasn’t in this situation. I can tell Danny’s thinking the same thing. He seems lost in a world far beyond this one. I try to look into his eyes but he can’t see me. It’s like there’s a wall between us, he’s in the land of all things good, whilst I remain in the present, tortured with the fact that I will have to face soon.

When we arrive at the train, and once we have boarded, we are introduced to a new world. We stare in wonder at the luxurious goods on board, and are enchanted as we run our fingers along the mahogany tables and touch the crystal chandeliers hanging delicately above us.

“Amazing!” says Effie as if she hasn’t seen it before “Oh, all of this, it’s so well, amazing”

Again we both nod “Yes, this is amazing”

“You should count yourselves lucky” Effie replies patting us both on our backs “This must all be so new to you”

I can tell Danny’s trying to keep his temper under control. I take his hand, and for the first time since the reaping he looks straight into my eyes.

“I’ll leave you two alone for a bit, your mentor will be along soon” and with that Effie leaves.

“I’m so sorry” Danny whispers

“You really think this is your fault?”

“Yes, I should have done something to protect you”

I don’t reply.

“Well, say something!” he shouts

He stares at me, silent, then hugs me.

I know that it’s not just me who has gone to hell and back today. There is a tap at the door and our mentor walks in.

“Hey there, I’m Finnick, Finnick Odair” he smiles a cheeky grin and drops into a chair.

“Tallulah, and this is my brother Danny”

He smiles, and for a second I think he is going to laugh at us.

“Well Tallulah and Danny, I won’t congratulate you, that’s pointless” He looks lost in thought and then says “What’s that phrase they seem quite fond of around here?”

We all know what he means.

Then it comes to him.

“Ahhh, yes, Tallulah, Danny” he says very seriously “May the odds be ever in your favour” he bursts into laughter.

“What’s so funny?” Danny asks

Finnick is having trouble keeping a straight face.

“Nothing” he seems to stop suddenly and then turns to me.

“Tallulah, so ever met this Danny before now?”

“I think you know the answer to that” I am not finding this Finnick boy funny at all.

“Yes, I’m just messing with you, it’s sad that you two are brother and sister, but you know, life must go on”

Danny storms out of the room.

“Ugh” I sigh “You’re not a very good mentor are you Finnick, Finnick Odair?”

“Well Tallulah, you, are not a very good mentee”

We chat for a while, but it starts to get dark and I can tell from the light outside, that it must be about midnight. I stare at the clock on the wall.

“We’ve been talking for three hours!”

“Yeah, tell me about it”

“Anyway, Finnick, I better be going to bed” I say “As Effie would say, it’s a big, big day tomorrow!”

“Yup” he smiles

“Well, Finnick, Finnick Odair, goodnight” I grin at him and he grins back.

But just because I have had a nice evening, this doesn’t stop the nightmares.
