One Night Part 2

The follow on from 'One Night Part 1'

What will happen to Louise and Charlie?

4. Enough

I'd had enough. I don't want to give these children a terrible life. This obviously wasn't meant to be, like Charlie had suggested. This time he was wrong. I had to sort this out. I turned around and saw Charlie close behind me. I quickly jumped up, kissing him hard on the lips. I whispered in his ear 'I love you, and I'm sorry,' and then set off running as fast as I could down the corridor.

I heard Charlie yelling my name and running after me. I had to get rid of him. I didn't want him to see what I was about to do. It would break his heart.

I ran out of the hospital and turned down lots of twisty roads which ran along next to the lake. No, not there. I am a good swimmer, so the lake won't do. I stopped and turned to look behind me, struggling to breathe. Charlie was hot on my tracks. I started running again, almost falling over my own feet.

I ran up the hill, up and up, until I got to the bridge that went over the lake. It was about 20 feet high. This would do. I turned around. I couldn't see Charlie anymore. Good. If I can't see him, he can't see me. I plucked up all my courage and stood on top of the barrier at the bridge. The cars going past were madly beeping their horns, but they couldn't stop me. I looked down, to the terrible fall which was going to be my new home. The last thing I would remember. I wanted to be free...

I heard Charlie screaming my name behind me, but I didn't turn around to look at him. I just couldn't do it. I pushed myself forward, the wind in my hair. I closed my eyes and whispered 'Goodbye world'...
