Lone Shadow

Calicia is the lone wolf. The packless one. Having a pack is all wolves ever dream of, but now she is cast out, and there's no food that can be found in the entire forest. Any day could be her last. It's her job to find the source of the missing food, and retrieve it. What can she do?

Pronunciation key:
Calicia - Cal-isss-ee-ah
Syanew - See-an-oo
Walnemazoi - Wal-knee-mah-zoy (Wal rhymes with pal)
Anuk - An-uk (Uk rhymes with puck)

5. Dropping

Dropping.  Head over heels.  That's what Calicia felt the following morning.  She woke before dawn and pretended to be sleeping, to see if Syanew would come again.  Then, he padded over, and dropped meat before her nose.  Then, he licked her wound affectionately and laid next to her.  When Calicia gathered enough courage to pretend to wake, Syanew ran away as quickly as he could.  As he faded into the distance, Calicia yelled

but he didn't.  He just kept running, until he was way out of her sight.  She felt shattered, as if all her hopes and dreams had failed before her eyes, although she didn't know why; she didn't even know him.  Maybe that's what made her follow him as best she could, the air of mystery around Syanew.  Still, that was all she tried to do all of each day, as well as trying to figure out why he would want to help her.

For the first time since leaving the pack, Calicia felt free.  She felt like she could do anything, go anywhere.  She didn't need a pack.  She didn't need anyone.  Did she?

That night, when Calicia settled down to sleep, Syanew padded slowly up to her, and said

"Why are you helping me?" she asked

He hesitated, then said "I... I saw something in you."

Just as he was beginning to walk away, Calicia said

 "Goodnight, Syanew."

and for a second, he looked back at her.
