Chapter 16:

I was shook awake a few hours later by Promethium. "Hurry, he said, something's wrong." He looked back toward Ancona and as I did the same, I could hear choking, Ancona's body was spasming and blood was dribbling down her cheek to the floor. "Quickly, I said, go get the Asari and Sala." He jumped up and jogged over to them. I almost flew up from the ground and ran over to Ancona's side. I lifted her head and placed my makeshift pillow under her neck, then I began tearing through the bandages around her breast's to get to the wound underneath. Finally I got to her skin, as the cold air in the room touched her skin she shuddered. I looked up and saw the commandos run over to us. I backed away as they had to work quickly to see what was wrong. "What's happening to her?" I asked. "It seems that the bullet had actually punctured her lung, she can't breathe ." Sala picked up the last of the medi- gel and poured the rest of the bottle into the wound. As the bottle emptied Ancona began to take long, deep, drawn out breaths. We all sighed in relief that she was okay. "Don't do that." I said. She looked up at me and said back; "Sorry coach." I nodded and stood as I patted her head. Then we all walked back to our posts and went back to sleep. Luckily the next few days of her recovery went by with out incident then finally on a Sunday she was healed and ready to move. When we opened the garage doors we saw that the blizzard had stopped. We walked outside and then the ground shook, we all dropped into defensive positions and took aim at nothing. Then a ship flew in overhead, it was the science officers ship from last week, it landed and the science officers stepped off. "Thank god, one of them said, we been trying to find you guys for a week so we could deliver this." Two other officers stepped off with supplies and gave them to us. Then Promethium and the other Geth stepped out into the cold winter air. "Holy shit!" one of the officers said as he dropped the supplies box and drew his pistol. Ancona jumped in the way. "No, they're with us, they helped us through the storm." The officer lowered his pistol and said; "Sorry, I'm just a little jumpy I guess." Promethium nodded and said; "We were just the same way with your kind at first too." Then there was an awkward silence that followed and I felt I had to break it. "So, I said, what did 'ya bring us?" The officer blinked back into reality and quickly picked up the box he had dropped. "Uh, we uh, we brought some food, and uh, some water, and some ammunition, and medi- gel. I nodded and took the box from him, then I handed it to Corvo. "Here ration this out to the troops Lieutenant." He nodded and walked to each trooper giving some of the supplies to them. "Look, said the officer, I wish we could do more but hostiles are everywhere we land...I'm sorry, I really am." The officer looked at his feet then quickly turned and walked back onto the ship with the other officers. When he got to the doorway he stopped and did a partial turn toward us then continued into the ship's door and the door shut. As the ship took off the snow around it flew up into small tycoons. Ancona came up behind me holding her helmet under her arm. "Where do we go now Carter?" she asked. I shook my head and said; "I don't know, I don't know anymore, it's almost like the world we live in is fantasy, I nodded toward the rest of the city, and in our minds is the real world." Then I turned and walked toward Promethium and said; "You can come with us if you want to, but you don't have to." He set his hand on my shoulder and said back; "We are family Carter, you and us and we will die as a family if need be." I smirked. "Thanks my friend." I patted his shoulder. Then I walked past him to my men and said; "As we stand here and I look at you, I can't help but think of those we have lost over the past months, from when we launched in September, to now in December, so let us now as a family, I glanced over toward Promethium and the Geth, go out and fight this Reaper invasion to our cores." Then I turned around at the sound of foot steps, it was Craan and the other snipers. "What are you doing here Craan?" I asked. He shrugged and said back; "We're here to wish you a merry Christmas." Was it really Christmas day, it was wasn't it. "Come on Craan let's walk and talk." He nodded and we started walking down a battle scarred sidewalk that was half covered in snow. "Craan, I said, you and the other snipers have really helped us over the month past, but tell me, is it because you were ordered to, or because you wanted to?" He nodded and said; "Let's say it was a little bit of both." Then a shot rang out, the two of us looked down at ourselves, but we weren't hit, so we turned to check everyone else and saw one of the snipers holding his chest as he fell into the snow dead. But before we could react another shot rang out, this time it was aimed at me but Promethium jumped in the way and took the shot in the shoulder. I was sprayed with a strange white liquid as he was thrown to the ground from the force of the shot. Then I got to one knee and unloaded a clip at the building the round had come from. Craan and I grabbed Promethium and we dragged him to cover with him shooting his rifle the whole way. "Are you okay?" I asked him. He nodded then climbed up to one knee and reloaded, we looked around and saw that no other Cerberus Troopers were coming. "Am I the only one that sees a problem with this picture?" I asked. "Sir, a private yelled from his cover, do that thing you did before." I crossed my eyes. "What thing?" I asked. The trooper poked his head out around the corner of rock he was behind. Holy shit, it was the private that was next to me when we were held down the first day here. Then I knew what he was talking about, the mental map thing I had been taught. "I don't know, that isn't always accurate." He shook his head. "So, he said, what ever helps." But before I could move another shot rang out and his head exploded in a spray of brains and viscera. As I watched him fall back onto the ground I got pissed. I drew my pistol and tapped the muzzle on the ground to get the mental map and when I had it I threw my arm over my head and unloaded a clip at the sniper and then all was silent again. While the others stood I walked over to the private a grabbed his blood covered tags. Private Eric Hammock age 19 ht 5'8 wt 161 lbs. Then for some reason I was angry with god so I let him have it. "WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN US, I screamed at the air, ARE WE SO HATED BY YOU THAT YOU SEND YOUNG MEN LIKE ERIC TO THEIR GRAVES JUST FOR LAUGHS!!?" I never got a response but of course I wasn't expecting one. Promethium, not understanding, asked; "Who are you yelling at Carter?" I turned and said back; "No one, just an old friend." He looked up and then at me. "Hmm." He grunted. I shook my head. "It doesn't matter let's just keep moving." I said. Spectra walked up behind me. "It doesn't make sense, why would they leave a random sniper out here while they go on?" she said. I shook my head and turned to her. "I couldn't tell you, I said, maybe they were counting on us being here." she nodded. "Listen, we need to move we can't stay here, in case they have more than one sniper around here." We kept walking and moved on, we had to keep moving and I knew where to go too. This truly was a very red Christmas indeed, I had two men dead in less than an hour and it wasn't even close to over. We were walking down the street toward our old house, if we had any luck it was still there.
