1. ONE, The Realm Of The Uninteresting

Why did he have to leave?! He left them, after all they'd been through! She knew it was going to happen, Alice had seen it before, yet each time it left her feeling utterly empty. Why didn't he stay? Why did his creator will him to go, he could have lived in his quaint little house, gone to the pub with his friends and thrown the lavish birthday parties that his family was so famous for. But no, he got on that ship and sailed away. WHY FRODO?! WHY DID YOU LEAVE SAM, PIPPIN AND MERRY, AFTER EVERYTHING! You went to Mordor together, battled orcs, demons and huge spiders! Alice knew that it wouldn't happen, but she still held hope that when she read page 1006 of her one volume Lord Of The Rings set Frodo would say “I'm joking, of course I'm staying!”, but he never did.

Alice put down her book and reality came slowly back into focus, boring hobbit-less reality. God she hated the real world. That's why the walls of her inner-city flat were covered with book shelves, which were in turn overfilled with book spilling over all genres. Alice lived less of a life and more of a permanent library visit, but she enjoyed it and so felt no compulsion to change it. She was happy, she didn't make others unhappy so everything was fine. Just.....fine. Although there was a corner in Alice's mind that was occupied by a small, but persuasive chimp who has always craved for something more. He's always wanted it, but has never had the decency to sit Alice down and have a long in depth conversation about what it was and how it could be obtained. So Alice spent her days in her personal library living adventures through fictitious characters. They were here friends, the ones who comforted her when she felt sad, or showed her beautiful landscapes, taught her spells and potions, showed her love and jealousy. Ever since she could read these books had been her parents.

Alice did have real parents, but they were somewhat distance, they did the bear minimum and then disappeared back to the world of work. Until school she hadn't thought of her relationship with her parents as weird, but then she heard other children talking about what they had done at the weekend: “We went to the zoo and daddy brought me a monkey teddy”, “we went to visit granddad and he told me all about the war”, “when we sat down for Sunday dinner and my little brother got a carrot stuck up his nose!”. Then they would ask Alice what she did to which she would have to reply ”Oh, I read books” this would be followed by a brief, but awkward silence and then the other children would go back to ignoring her. But this didn't bother Alice, she had her novels, her little private worlds where everyone loved her and that was enough for her.

Back in the present Alice stared at her walls and wondered into which literary portal she would throw herself into next. She walked over to the Horror section and was about to pick up James Herbert's Haunted when an unusual alarm sounded from her phone. When she reached it the screen on her phone read:

2:00PM

GO OUTSIDE ALICE!

SPEND SOME TIME IN THE WORLD THAT YOU ACTUALY LIVE IN!

LOTS OF LOVE SARAH

X

Ah, Sarah Dodgson the one person who had been friends with Alice in primary school. Although to begin with their friendship was mostly built on the fact that hanging around with Alice made Sarah look a little less strange and Sarah's dad owned a book shop and he gave Alice 10% off. Eventually however they got to know each other and the rest, as they say, is history. It would be fair to say that without Sarah, Alice would have moved into this flat after Uni and never come out again. How Sarah got to her phone this time, must have been when she got up to pay at the bar last week, Alice ignored it and went back to Haunted. Then 2 minutes later:

2:02PM

I SAID GO OUTSIDE ALICE!

SARAH

X

Again Alice ignored it, but she did have to admit that it's uncanny how well Sarah can predict her actions, but she wasn't about to admit defeat just yet. Back once again to Haunted, Chapter one, A Dream, A Memory. A whispered.....

2:04PM

I AM WAITING IN THE CAFE,

IF YOU DON'T TURN UP IN 5 MINUTES I'M

COMING UP THERE ARE BURNING

EVERY BOOK YOU OWN!

SARAH

The third alarm was enough to motivate Alice into leave her library. She placed the book down and moved over to the old silver frame mirror by the door. She'd never considered herself a vain person, but equally she liked to checked that she looked OK. Her shoulder length blonde hair was tied up in a sleek pony tail, her pale skin served to emphasize her blue eyes. Yes she looked acceptable. Grabbing her coat and bag Alice stepped out of her safe world and into the realm of the uninteresting.
