Facing The Truth (A OneDirection Fanfiction)

Everyone I knew moved on with their lives.

Jake stayed with me through summer. Holding me when I needed to cry. Putting up with me when I needed to scream and yell. Helping me laugh for those small moments of forgotten joy I had left. And talking to me when I lost touch with reality.

But he had to leave too. No one was going to stay and wait for the lost girl with the broken smile.

Eventually, I sold our house. And left for England. I had too many broken memories and lost dreams in California.

I could lie and say that I was excited. Or I could tell the truth and say my cheeks weren't dry from the tears the whole flight. Bittersweet memories and nostalgia flooded my shattered heart.

15. Falling Apart

*Scarlette's POV*

My whole body was numb. I couldn't feel the tears on my cheeks anymore, but I knew they were there. My face had no expression. This was really happening.

The chair I was sitting in was extremely uncomfortable.

His office was small, and I felt it getting smaller by the second.

My breathing began tensing up.

The door opened and Jones walked in.

"I brought you some water."

I didn't reply.

"Scarlette, you need to eat or drink something. It's been 24 hours."

I had so much to say but no words left my mouth.

"Please." he begged.

"Why?" I asked.

"What?" he replied cautiously.

"Why did no one ever mention anything to me?"

He kept silent.

"Why did no one ever say something?" I looked him in the eye. He looked tired.

He sighed and sat down in the chair across from me. After a few seconds he looked at me.

"You just weren't ready for it."

"Why do you suppose I'm ready now?" I asked gritting my teeth.

"You're nineteen-"

"I turned nineteen yesterday!"

"I'm sorry, Scar. But this is important." he trailed off. "You're important."

"Where are my real parents?" I asked daringly.

"Your biological dad, he uh...he left your mother- your biological mother five months before you were born." He answered softly.

"And my mother?"

"She died during your birth." He croaked out the words. His eyes were watery and red.

"Then how do I look exactly like my fake mother?"

"She's your aunt. Your biological mother's twin. Your mother's plan was to put you up for adoption. We had the idea of having two agents adopt you to keep an eye on you and your aunt was insistent on being one of them. You're her doppelgänger."

The tears came back to my cheeks and I let out a whimper as I rethought everything that happened in the past 24 hours.

Jones took me to a secret underground building, took my phone and turned it off. Everyone was wearing suits. It looked so much liked the movies. 'So cliche' I thought at the time.

He led me to his office and sat me down and explained everything to me.

My mother and father weren't my real parents. They were agents.

The business trips my dad was always on, we're meetings with Jones.

The man who brutally murdered my fake mother, was in fact targeting me.

My fake father was the one who got to him before he got to me.

The man who killed my fake mother is still alive.

My fathers death wasn't a car accident, it was a murder, but was masked to look like an accident.

I was supposed to die during birth.

To save me, I was injected with an experimental chemical.

The chemical was supposed to keep my heart pumping, with electricity.

The chemical worked.

The chemical had side effects.

That explains my sixth sense, my color changing eyes, and my intolerance for alcohol. That explains.....

"Scarlette. Scarlette. Please." Jones' voice floated to me.

"What?" I looked up at him and snapped out of my trance.

"You feeling any better?" He asked.

"No. But I have to move on with my life." I said, feeling fake. I looked down hoping everything would go away.

"About that...."

I looked back up at him. 'Of course.' I thought to myself.

"You have training."

"Training? For what?"

"There's an international drug lord named Johan Schwell. And he's extremely dangerous. In the past decade he's killed 12 people. 11 of them, innocent."

I was now confused.

"He's on the international top ten most wanted list. Inside resources say that he has cartels coming in to Florida from Cuba next week."

"Get to the point Jones." I gritted my teeth.

"We need you to stop him."

I was dumbfounded.

"ME?!!" I screamed. I felt my blood pressure rising. This is all a joke.

"Yes, you. the chemical you were injected with as a baby has more side effects but they've been dormant. With training, they will be reactivated. And with that, you'll be better than any agent we've had."

"You're joking, right?" I asked hopelessly.

"Sadly no."

"Forget it." I said getting up ready to leave.

"Scarlette."

"What? What do you want? I'm not who you think I am. I'm a girl who goes to Cambridge, teaches a dance class, and has loving friends who I, in fact, need to get back to! Considering the fact you took my phone and won't let me just tell them I'm okay! I have no idea if my boyfriend is safe and I've disappeared off the face of the planet for the past 24 hours! So give me my phone and let. me. go." I yelled at him and said the last part through gritted teeth and tears.

Jones looked surprised. He was silent and still.

"I'm not the bad guy here." He said softly. "Schwell was the one behind your aunt's murder. He was trying to get to you, but she protected you."

I remembered the scene exactly. His face never left my memory.

"He knows you're the only one who can stop him. That's why he targeted you. And if he can't get to you, he'll get to your loved ones."

Harry's face lingered into my mind followed by the rest of the boys and Katie, Eleanor, and Danielle. I felt sick. But I needed to keep my composure.

"Well he hasn't yet." I argued back. "And as long as he doesn't know where I am, we have no problem." I was talking without sense.

"David and Dev went to visit you last month."

I felt a pang in my heart. I didn't realize how much I missed them until he mentioned them.

"Visit me where?" I asked between breaths.

"Your old house. They had no idea you left California did they?"

"Did? What do you mean 'did'? They still don't know. Right?" I asked cautiously.

"Schwell had a bomb implanted in your backyard. Three months ago. He thought you were still living in the house. When he found out that you weren't in California, well it was too late to detach it."

"And?" my breath was shortening.

He looked reluctant to continue. My heart was beating faster than ever.

"He decided that if he couldn't get to you, he'd at least send a message." He paused and looked at me cautiously. He finally continued.

"He hacked into your old mobile number and sent a text to Dev and David inviting them over to your house. They thought it was you so they went...."

I put 2 and 2 together and my heart sunk. Fresh tears pooled in my eyes as they slid down my cheeks. "Oh my god.."

I was sobbing and shaking. Dev and David. Oh god no....

"Three people died. David, Dev, and your neighbor Casey Adams."

"Casey Adams?" Casey was an adorable 5 year old that lived next door to me in California.

"She was going to tell your friends that you moved. Coincidentally, thats when the bomb went off..."

I collapsed to the floor and cried my heart out. I was shaking violently.

They died because of me. I was the one supposed to be dead not them.

My family, my friends. I put them in danger.

"This can't be mentioned to anyone Scarlette. It's classified."

I ignore him.

Suddenly he crouched down next to me and took me in his arms and rubbed my back. Strange enough, it was comforting.

I suddenly longed to see Harry. Oh my god I missed him so much.

"What am I supposed to do now? I want my life back, Jones." I whispered to him.

"Ok just calm down. Calm down. shhh.." he whispered to me before I fell into a deep sleep.
