10. Rapide

I sat opposite Felix on the small aircraft. I had never travelled in such a posh way and I was still gazing round the cabin in awe when we took off.

“So Catherine,” Felix said from the cream leather chair opposite mine.

“Please, call me Cat,” I smiled at him.

“Cat,” he smiled. “What makes you interested in Raven?” I was unsure whether he knew my father was James Bond so I decided not to tell him.

“I believe he organised the death of my mother,” I said not taking my eyes off him. He leaned back in his chair and sighed.

“Wow, that’s an awful big accusation,” he said.

“Well, you have to go with your gut, whether it’s a small thing or indeed a big accusation.”

“That’s very wise,” he laughed. “Champagne?” I nodded and watched him pour the champagne. I had learnt a lot these past six days at MI6; always watch the person who pours you a drink and let them take the first sip. You never know what people will put in your drink. He handed me a glass and we toasted to Raven. I slowly rose my glass as Felix took a swig of his. I smiled and sipped mine, feeling the bubbles engulf my mouth and the liquid overwhelm my taste buds.

“So, how long have you been with MI6? I know almost every agent.”

“Not long,” I replied, keeping my answers vague. “Has M told you anything about me?”

“Yes, he told me you had a close relationship with Bond,” he said. “But I didn’t think Bond went with girls as young as you are.”

“He doesn’t. I’m not just another ‘Bond Girl’,” I replied.

“If you’re not another one of his girls then who are you?” He asked leaning forward in his chair. I laughed and shook my head.

“Everyone has said it’s so obvious, but then I suppose they saw us side by side,” I said.

“Wait, what’s obvious?” Felix looked confused which caused me to laugh again.

“Do you know what my last name is?” I asked taking another sip of the champagne.

“Bond…” Felix’s face went from confusion to suddenly smiling. “My, oh my, he certainly kept that quiet for what? Eighteen years?” Felix laughed as I nodded.

“Truth is, he didn’t really know,” I sighed.

“So, you’ve just met him?”

“Yeah, and then he goes and gets shot,” I laughed.

“Catherine Bond,” Felix said. “What a nice sounding name, sounds upper-class British.”

“I am far from upper-class though, Felix” I said.

“Tell me one thing Cat.”

“What is that one thing, Felix?”

“You seem so reserved, so…secretive,” he looked at me. “Why?”

“I’ve been through a lot,” I replied simply.

“Such as?” Felix was pressing and I knew he was interested, but I just didn’t want to talk about it.

“You asked for one thing and I gave you one thing,” I said. He looked at me again and then burst out laughing.

“You, young lady, are just like your father! Whether you know it or not,” Felix laughed.

“I seem to have many people tell me that, yet I can’t see it,” I replied as I sipped the last of my champagne.

“More?” Felix asked nodding to my bottle.

“No thanks,” I said as I got up to put the glass away. “I’d rather have a can of coke.” I reached the beverage cupboard and got myself a can.

“Could you get me one as well?” Felix’s voice drifted over from our seats. I got him a can and went to sit back down.

“So, you think Raven killed your mother, and now you’re going to kill him?” Felix asked looking straight at me.

“Either kill, or perhaps maim him. It’s not just revenge for my mother, but for the other people he’s hurt or killed whilst he’s been looking for me.”

“Looking for you?”

“Yes, he’s been looking for me for my whole life. He’s come close to finding me several times, but I’ve managed to escape him. The people he killed in India were the last straw, and I came to England to find my father.”

“So he would help you?”

“No, so he would tell me why they were trying to get to me, in order to hurt him. Then I met Dad and knew why,” I sighed.

“Why?”

“He’s 007, which villainous figure in this world doesn’t want Bond dead or hurt?” I laughed.

“True,” Felix nodded, chuckling.

“Raven’s very dangerous, isn’t he?” I asked quietly.

“Well, yes, you obviously know that from experience.”

“I’ve never seen him though,” I sighed. “Only the picture from his file and that gave me the chills. That’s how I knew it was him.”

“Yeah, he’s very dangerous,” Felix said. “We’ve been after him for a few years now, but each time we come close to catching him, he seems to just disappear. We’ll get him this time, especially with Bond on his tail, too”

“And me,” I said.

“Well,” Felix replied.

“Just because it seems like I have no experience doesn’t mean that I can’t your brains out,” I said coldly.

“OK, OK! Sorry, I didn’t mean to offend you.” Felix held his hands up as if to surrender to me.

“Don’t worry about it,” I sighed. “Too many people have doubted that I can do this, and I just know I can prove them wrong.”

“Obviously M believes in you, as does Bond, otherwise you wouldn’t be sitting here on your way to finally proving people wrong, just don’t forget that if you need help, then ask for it.”

“Okay,” I replied. I could feel my eyes starting to droop and before I knew it my dreams had taken over my mind. I felt someone put a blanket over me and recline the chair I was on.

I felt the plane make contact with the ground and realised we had landed. I sat up and saw Felix still sitting opposite me.

“Are we here?” I asked.

“Yeah,” Felix said. I reached over for my can of coke and realised it was empty. I went to get up but Felix stopped me.

“I’ll get it,” he smiled. I sat down again and smiled as he handed me another can of coke. The stewardess opened the door and smiled as she told us we were free to get off the plane. I grabbed my rucksack from under my chair and got off the plane with Felix behind me. We walked through the checkout and to the baggage carousel to collect our bags. Felix handed me mine and grabbed his.

“Do you think he’s here yet?” I asked.

“Your father? No doubt he’s waiting outside,” Felix said. We walked out of the airport into the blistering heat. I saw him straight away, leaning against an incredibly stylish sports car. He was wearing sunglasses and a black polo shirt with beige camo trousers. He saw us and smiled at me. I smiled back and walked over to him. He grabbed me and hugged me tightly.

“I missed you,” he said.

“Missed you too, Dad,” I replied. He let go and shook Felix’s hand.

“Felix.”

“Bond,” Felix replied smiling. “Cat is a splendid girl, just like you.” Dad smiled and put his arm round me.

“Shall we get going to the hotel then?” He said as he opened the door to his car.

“What kind of car is this?” I asked as I slid into the passenger seat. Felix got in the back and Dad sat in the driver’s seat.

“An Aston Martin, no doubt,” Felix laughed. “Filled with gadgets from Q-branch, naturally.”

“Felix, you know me too well,” Dad laughed. “It’s an Aston Martin Rapide S. And yes, Q-branch has fully equipped this beauty with useful gadgets.”

“It’s a lovely car,” I said. Dad started the engine and it made the most beautiful sound I had ever heard. “Wow,” I said. Dad laughed and Felix patted my shoulder. We left for the hotel and I spent most of the way gazing out of the window at the marvellous views of Kingston, Jamaica.

“Speaking of Q-branch,” Dad said. “How is Q, Cat?”

“He’s okay,” I replied. I had a feeling that this conversation was going to get uncomfortable pretty soon.

“Just okay?”

“Yes, Dad, he’s okay.”

“Okay.” He said. I hoped he would drop it then but naturally, he didn’t. “That night, the night I left, what did you speak about?”

“Just stuff,” I sighed.

“Stuff like what?”

“MI6, my future career, what happened in India, why I wanted to find you, stuff.”

“Why did you want to find me?”

“We’ve already spoken about it Dad,” I sighed.

“Was it just to get revenge on Raven? Or did you want to find me to get to know me?”

“Both,” I said.

“Okay,” he said. We pulled up outside the posh hotel and Dad came round to open my door for me. “Did anything else happen that night?”

“No, Q was a perfect gentleman,” I said.

“Good,” Dad smiled. Felix walked ahead of us into the lobby of the hotel. Dad walked up to the reception desk and checked us in. The receptionist gave Dad two keys, one of which he gave to Felix. Felix nodded and said he’d meet us in the lobby at five. I looked at the watch Q-branch had given me, it was two-thirty and I wanted to have a nap before we got to work.

“Come on,” Dad said as he picked up my bag for me. I followed him up the stairs and to our room. I gasped as we walked in; there was a large living area with two leather sofas and two doors on one side of the room that lead to two bedrooms, and each room had an en suite bathroom and a view that was gorgeous.

“Do you like it?” Dad asked.

“I love it!” I smiled.

“Wait until you see the rest of the city then,” he laughed as he put my bag in one of the rooms. “I suggest you have a couple of hours of sleep, I’ll wake you up at quarter past four.”

“Okay,” I smiled as I went into the room that Dad had put my bag in. I walked out onto the balcony and I saw the beach and the incredibly blue sea. I smiled to myself and went into the bag to get out the t-shirt that Q had packed as a nightie. I slipped off my jeans and top and slid Q’s top over my head. I breathed in his scent and wondered what he was doing right now. At that moment the phone that Will gave me rang.

“Hello?” I said.

“Cat,” Q breathed down the phone.

“Q,” I replied smiling.

“Did you get there alright?” He asked.

“Yeah, I’m at the hotel now, Dad told me to have a couple of hours of sleep, so I’m about to get into bed,” I said.

“Okay, was Felix nice?” He asked.

“Felix is always nice to thing concerned with Bond,” I heard M say in the background. I laughed.

“Yeah, Felix was lovely,” I said.

“Oh,” Q replied. My door opened and Dad walked in. He held his hand out for the phone.

“Erm, Q?” I said, holding a finger up to Dad, telling him to wait a second.

“Yes?” He said.

“Dad wants to talk to you,” I sighed.

“Oh,” he said again. “Put him on.” I handed the phone to Dad who walked out of the room and before I could follow him shut the door. I sighed and sat down on the bed. I looked out the window again and wished that Q was here with me. I heard Dad’s voice as he shouted down the phone. I decided to just ignore it and sleep, he’d get over the fact that Q and I liked each other, sooner or later. I sighed and curled up under the blanket, letting sleep and jetlag consume my consciousness. I dreamt of Q. And I dreamt of my Dad. And I dreamt of Mum.
