12. The Lazy Afternoon

Like most days after school, Noah, Eddie, Allie and I all walked home together. And like almost every day, Eddie was hitting on Allie. But she kept ignoring him. Girls always fell under Eddie’s spell, but not Allie. Allie was a hopeless romantic, she wanted to feel real love, so, even though she thought Eddie was cute, she hated the fact that he was a player. No matter what Allie thought though, I believed that if she and Eddie went out on a date together, they would really hit it off. I saw the way Eddie looked at her and I could tell that he truly liked her. Maybe Allie was the girl that could make him change his ways. Who knows?

I was walking on the edge of the sidewalk, pretending that my open arms were wings and that I was flying. Noah was walking next to me. He was watching me with a cute half smile plastered on his face and with his hands deep into his pockets. I looked at him. His brown hair was as always parted on one side and his deep blue eyes were glistening like two pools of water in the afternoon sun.

‘I’m a butterfly,’ I told him, giggling. Sometimes, I acted like such a five year old.

Noah smiled at me. ‘You look like an angel to me,’ he said, smiling sweetly, and I froze to the spot, my hands dropping to my sides. He had taken me by surprise and I didn’t know how to react. But then, Allie slapped Eddie hard across the face. So, yeah, that happened and it grabbed my and Noah’s full attention. The two of us stared at the two of them with wide eyes and blinking. Eddie was in shock. He rubbed his cheek, which had turned red hot.

‘I am not going to spend the night with you!’ Allie screamed at him.

‘You didn’t let me finish, Allie!’ Eddie shouted at her. Then, he lowered his voice and went on full annoyed, ‘I was going to ask you to spend the night with me watching films!’

‘Oh,’ Allie said, surprised. But then, she squealed all flushed, ‘Stop trying to flirt with me all the time, Eddie! It’s frustrating!’ And then, she walked away.

Eddie shoved his hands into his pockets. ‘I don’t understand girls,’ he muttered irritably, watching her go. I pressed my lips together, holding back my laughs, while Noah chuckled.

‘I’ll go see if she’s okay. I’ll talk to you guys later,’ Noah said, looking at my face, and then, he went after his sister.

When Eddie and I got home, we found Dad and uncle Liam arguing loudly in the living room. They were probably arguing about Mom, but when they saw us coming in, they fell quiet. Uncle Louis, uncle Zayn and Niall were there, too. Eddie glared at uncle Liam before he shook his head and went upstairs.

‘Brilliant,’ uncle Liam sighed. ‘Eddie hates me.’

‘Don’t worry, uncle Liam, I’m on your side!’ I said and Dad’s big green eyes widened. I went on, ‘Us girls can separate what we feel about our boy best friends from what we feel about our boyfriends, no matter what Dad thinks.’ By the time I had finished, everyone was speechless. Wow, go me! Niall cleared his throat, attempting to catch my eye, but I refused to look at him. Since he promised my Dad to stay away from me, I felt as if he had left me when I needed him the most. So, I was angry with him.

As I went up the stairs, I heard Dad saying with a heavy sigh, ‘I think my little girl hates me.’

In my room, I ate a banana and a cupcake that I had in my school bag. Then, I took my school uniform off and got into bed in my underwear. I sighed, closing my eyes, and a few minutes later, I dozed off.

When I woke up, it was dark outside. I groaned, searching for my phone, but when I saw that the time was almost seven, I gasped, jumping out of bed. I put on my white spring dress, a pink cardigan and brown cowboy boots. I let my hair down. After I fixed my makeup a little, I went downstairs. Dad and Eddie were sitting in the living room, having dinner. They had ordered pizza, so, they both had a slice in their hand and they were drinking coke. When Dad saw me, he quickly got up, dropping his slice into the pizza box.

‘Where are you going, Emma bear?’ Dad asked, wiping his hands with a napkin.

‘At Allie’s,’ I lied.

‘Why don’t you have dinner with us first?’ Dad asked. He was begging.

‘I’m not hungry,’ I told him coldly, shutting him out.

‘Okay, pumpkin,’ Dad said, defeated. His emerald eyes were so sad. ‘Be back by ten, yeah?’

I nodded, and when he moved closer to kiss my forehead like he always did before I left home, I stepped back. Dad was taken aback, but he folded his arms and sniffed, holding back the wetness which had gathered in his eyes. Argh! I felt sad now, too. ‘Bye, Dad,’ I said sheepishly, leaving. Was I taking it too far? Yes, I wanted to piss my Dad off, but I never wanted to see him cry because of me!

Outside, I bumped into Niall, who grabbed my arms before I fell down. ‘Easy there, tiger,’ Niall said, chuckling. I lifted my eyes up to his face and glared. Niall was taken aback, because, I had never looked at him like that before. Frowning, he let me go and shoved his hands into his jeans’ pockets. ‘Where are you off to, angel?’ he asked.

‘I’m going to meet Jimmy,’ I replied, looking right into his eyes. The muscle in his jaw jumped, but he kept calm. So, I told him, daring him, ‘I think I’m going to let him do whatever he wants to me really soon.’ His face hardened, but he was still quiet. ‘Okay, then,’ I said, walking away. But Niall grabbed my arm, turning me round. His grip on my arm was too tight, but when I gasped, he relaxed it.

‘Stop behaving like a spoilt child,’ Niall told me through his teeth.

‘I thought my Dad told you to stay away from me,’ I said, yanking my arm away.

Niall’s baby blue eyes widened for a moment. He understood now why I had been acting towards him the way I had. ‘Don’t go to him, angel,’ Niall groaned, begging. ‘Come inside and have pizza with us, with me.’

‘Kiss me and I won’t go,’ I told him. ‘On the lips.’

‘I can’t do that, Emma,’ Niall said, desperate, running his hands through his hair. ‘Harry’s right behind that door,’ he continued, pointing at the front door of my house.

I shrugged. ‘Fine, then. I’d love to stay and chat, but Jimmy’s waiting for me at The Billiard Room café,’ I said, turning my back to him.

As I walked away, I heard Niall curse, ‘Damn it.’
