6. The Funfair

Warning: Strong language at the end of the chapter.

‘Angel, wait,’ Niall called, coming after me. He gently grabbed my arm, turning me round.

‘What, uncle Niall? What do you want?’ I asked coldly, folding my arms and looking at him from under my eyebrows.

Niall sighed heavily before he moved closer. ‘I’m sorry I yelled at you, angel,’ he said in his softest tone and I froze to the spot, because, I felt as if his deep voice, hot breath and Irish accent had caressed me everywhere. ‘But you frustrate me so fucking much,’ he added through his teeth. His face was inches from mine. Then, he pulled away, clenched his jaw and mumbled obscenities, looking at all the people around us. We were at the funfair and we were surrounded by tons of smiling, talking people. I blinked with wide eyes. Niall had never cursed in front of me before. He was always so careful around me. But not anymore. Had I gotten under his skin? Did he have feelings for me? Niall fixed his crystal blue eyes on me again and I swallowed with difficulty. ‘You’re one of my best mates’ little girl, Emma,’ Niall muttered. ‘What am I supposed to do with you?’ He looked so torn.

‘Love me back!’ I replied, desperate. ‘Daddy will understand.’

‘No, angel,’ he said, letting out another heavy sigh. ‘Harry won’t understand. He’ll probably beat the crap out of me if I touch you.’

‘You want to touch me!?’ I asked ecstatically.

Niall’s eyes widened for a moment, but then, he cleared his throat and said sternly, ‘That’s not the point, angel.’ I nodded, looking into his eyes and hiding a smile.

‘Oh my God, it’s Niall Horan from One Direction!’ a blonde girl squealed, approaching us with her two friends. The three girls went straight to Niall and I rolled my eyes.

‘Can we have an autograph, a picture and a hug each?’ one of the other girls asked with the biggest smile I had ever seen. She was wearing glasses. The third one had orange hair.

‘Sure, girls,’ Niall replied politely. After they got what they wanted, the girl with the glasses noticed me.

First, she gasped. Then, she asked all excited, ‘Oh my God! Aren’t you Harry Styles’ daughter? Aren’t you Emma Styles?’

With a forced smile, I nodded. ‘I am,’ I said, shrugging. At that, the three girls surrounded me.

‘Your Dad’s so hot!’ the blonde one said. ‘Does he walk around the house naked?’

‘Sometimes, when Eddie and I aren’t around,’ I replied. The three of them squealed, looking at each other.

‘Eddie’s so cute!’ the same girl said. ‘Lily has a huge crush on him,’ she added, pointing at the girl with the orange hair.

‘Daisy!’ Lily complained, blushing.

‘Can we have Eddie’s number?’ Daisy asked.

I blinked dully at her. ‘I’m sorry, Eddie has a girlfriend,’ I lied.

Daisy shrugged. ‘We don’t mind,’ she said. I was speechless.

‘I wish I were you for a day,’ Lily said shyly.

I smiled at her. ‘My life really isn’t as perfect as it looks like,’ I told her.

‘You look so much like Hazza!’ the girl with the glasses said. ‘You’re so pretty! I want to be your new best friend! Can I touch your curls?’

I faked a laugh. Sadly enough, it wasn’t the first time I had heard all of that from One Direction fans.

‘Girls,’ Niall said, standing with his broad back to me, hiding me from them, protecting me. ‘I think Harry would really appreciate it if you let Emma have fun at the funfair, tonight.’

The three girls nodded. ‘Okay, Nialler! We love you!’ they said, walking away.

Niall turned round and put his big hands on my shoulders. ‘Listen, angel, I have to go find Dalia, but we’ll talk about what happened between us whenever you want, yeah?’

I nodded. ‘Okay.’

‘Go have fun, but be careful of Jimmy, yeah?’ Niall said, looking me dead in the eye, and I nodded again. As Niall disappeared into the crowd, I looked around, searching for Jimmy. I found him flirting with two of the popular girls from school. I shook my head and turned to leave, but Jimmy spotted me.

‘Hey, babe,’ Jimmy called. ‘Come over here.’ Glaring and with my arms folded, I walked to him.

‘Jimmy, did you come to the funfair with the Virgin Queen?’ one of the girls asked, glaring at me. Her lip was curled and she looked disgusted.

Jimmy put his arm around my waist, resting his hand on my hip. For some unknown reason, I didn’t shy away from his touch. ‘Emma’s the most beautiful girl in school,’ he said coolly. ‘So, yeah, I’m here with her tonight and I’m lucky to be.’ My mouth fell. I was speechless. So were the other two girls. They both clicked their tongues, spat a ‘whatever,’ and walked away.

‘That was really sweet of you,’ I told him.

Jimmy shrugged. ‘Do you like cotton candy?’ he asked. ‘I can buy you some, if you want.’

‘I love cotton candy,’ I replied. Jimmy nodded, walked to a cotton candy cart, bought me one and handed it to me. ‘Thanks,’ I murmured.

‘No problem,’ he said, shoving his hands into his jeans’ pockets.

‘Want some?’ I asked.

‘Nah. Cotton candy’s for little children,’ he joked.

‘Whatever,’ I said, stuffing some in my mouth. ‘It’s delicious.’

When I shamelessly licked my thumb, Jimmy ran his tongue over his lower lip, staring at my mouth. ‘I bet,’ he groaned in a thick voice, his pupils dilating. I chewed on my lower lip, feeling all awkward, because, I was sure that he was having dirty thoughts right now. ‘Come on,’ he said, taking my hand. ‘I’ll win a teddy bear for you.’ He dragged me to a claw machine.

‘Nobody ever wins anything at claw machines, Jimmy,’ I told him, laughing a little. But he didn’t reply. He only grinned, put a coin in and won a teddy bear in seconds.

‘Here you go, babe,’ Jimmy said with a half smile, giving me a little brown teddy bear with a red ribbon around its neck.

‘Wow, thanks,’ I breathed, blinking. Jimmy was quiet and was looking at my face.

‘I think that’s Emma Styles!’ I heard a girl squeak. ‘I think that girl’s Hazza’s daughter!’

‘Oh no, not again,’ I complained.

‘Come on, babe,’ Jimmy said, grabbing my hand. We ran away from the funfair and to the park across the street. The park was empty and we sat down on an old wooden bench.

‘I don’t get why you’re still a virgin,’ Jimmy said. He put a cigarette between his lips.

‘I want my first time to be with someone I’m in love with!’ I told him. ‘Not some random guy.’

‘Falling in love is overrated, babe,’ Jimmy said. ‘For me, infatuation and passion is what matters.’ I fell quiet and just looked at him for a moment, studying every inch of his face. Jimmy liked that, so, he grinned. Then, he said, lighting up his cigarette, ‘I know your dirty little secret, Emma Styles.’

I frowned. ‘What do you mean?’

Jimmy took a drag, blew the smoke out and said, ‘I know you have a crush on Niall Horan.’

I swallowed with difficulty. ‘You do?’

Jimmy nodded. ‘I see it in the way you look at him. The old man likes you, too.’

‘He’s not an old man,’ I protested.

Jimmy chuckled. ‘I’ll keep my mouth shut,’ he said, putting his hand on my knee. ‘And your daddy won’t find out about it, but I need something in return.’

‘What do you want?’ I asked and I felt as if my heart was racing in my throat.

‘I want to be your first,’ Jimmy replied coolly, staring into my eyes. At that, I pursed my lips, grabbed the cigarette out of his mouth, threw it on the grass and smashed it under my pink converse.

‘Go fuck yourself!’ I told him, walking away. ‘I hate you!’

‘I’d rather fuck you, angel,’ Jimmy said, and I gasped, turning round.

‘Don’t ever call me that again,’ I warned, but Jimmy was unaffected. He lit up another cigarette.

‘You’ll come around,’ Jimmy said simply and cockily. I shook my head, leaving the park. I was in no mood to go back to the funfair, so, I decided to walk home. Halfway there, I realized that I had the teddy bear Jimmy had won for me in my right hand and was gripping it tightly.
