2. The Bully

I was sitting in class, scribbling hearts and lyrics in my copy of Romeo and Juliet and listening to our English teacher, Mr. Williams, going on and on and on about Shakespeare’s play. I stared outside the window, resting my chin in my hand. It was the first day of March, the sun was shining outside, but it was snowing! I smiled, thinking that these things happened only in England. And then, I sighed, my mind filling with my uncle Niall, who was such a special snowflake. Noah, as if sensing what I was thinking about, kicked the back of my chair, pulling me out of my daydreams. I looked over my shoulder, glaring a little, but Noah shrugged innocently, half smiling cheekily. Allie, who was sitting next to me, saw everything and smirked.

‘Miss Styles,’ Mr. Williams called and I jolted, swirling round. Mr. Williams pushed his glasses high up to the bridge of his nose before he crossed his arms across his chest and said in his husky voice, ‘You know the drill, Miss Styles. Stand up and repeat everything I’ve just said.’ Mr. Williams was in his mid thirties and was a pretty cool teacher, but when he caught a student not paying attention during his class, he made them get up from their chair and repeat everything he had said, which was kind of brutal.

Chewing on my lower lip, I swallowed with difficulty, got up and fiddled with the bottom of my skirt, pulling it down a little. Jimmy Shadows, the school’s bad boy, wolf whistled when I did that. Jimmy had been bullying me about my dad and One Direction since we were twelve, but this year, he took his bullying to a whole new level. Since September, he’s been calling me ‘babe’ all the time and he’s been hitting on me in the rudest way possible, because, well, I was still a virgin. ‘Shut up, Jimmy,’ I told him irritably, blushing, and he winked at me with a big fat grin on his face.

‘Miss Styles, we’re all waiting,’ Mr. Williams said sternly, demanding my attention.

‘But Mr. Williams!’ I protested, stomping my foot on the ground and pointing at the bad boy at the back of the class. ‘Jimmy just – ’ But the bell rang, stopping me mid-sentence. Mr. Williams let out a loud, heavy sigh, shaking his head and rubbing his forehead. Then, he pointed at the board, reminding everyone what we had to do for tomorrow. Mumbling complains, I gathered my things and stormed out of the classroom. Allie and Noah were on my side in no time at all. Allie was on my right, Noah was on my left. ‘Jimmy’s such a jerk, honestly,’ I complained, shaking my head.

‘He totally is,’ Allie agreed, nodding.

‘You want me to start a fight with him?’ Noah asked, punching his left palm with his right fist, and I laughed a little, touching his arm. Noah smiled at me with soft eyes.

But then, Jimmy had to ruin everything again. He slapped my butt hard, walked past me and turned round to witness my reaction. I opened my mouth to shout at him, but he fixed his dark brown eyes on me, and I hushed. Jimmy said, ‘Aw, what are you going to do about it, babe? Tell your daddy to buy the school and throw me out?’ Then, he and his two friends burst out laughing.

One would think that after all these years of Jimmy’s bullying I would have gotten used to it, but every single mean comment Jimmy made about my dad and my four uncles, hurt. It really did. So, my eyes filled with tears. Jimmy noticed, stopped laughing and smacked his two friends to the back of the head, yelling at them, ‘What are you two idiots laughing about?’ The two boys looked at each other in confusion, rubbing the back of their necks. Then, Jimmy looked at me and told me with a nod, ‘I’ll see you later, baby.’

‘Stop calling her, baby,’ Noah said to Jimmy through his teeth and with his lip curled. Noah was growling a little, too, so, I grabbed his arm, holding him back, just in case he felt like starting a fight for real.

‘The friendzoned nerd to the rescue,’ Jimmy said, grinning, and all color drained from Noah’s face. Satisfied with what he had done, Jimmy turned round and walked away.

‘What was that supposed to mean?’ I asked, frowning, looking at Noah. The blue eyed boy looked at me with a sad, pained look on his face, before he yanked his arm away from me and walked away, too. He was shaking his head and was running his hands through his hair. I looked at Allie and asked in absolute oblivion, ‘What did I do?’

‘Oh, Emma,’ Allie simply said, shaking her head, too. When we walked outside, I found Mom waiting in the car for me, so, I told Allie that we would talk later and climbed into the passenger seat of our grey Range Rover. Eddie, my fifteen year old brother, and Logan, uncle Zayn’s fifteen year old son, were sitting in the backseat. They were grinning and talking about all the girls that had been ogling them all day. Eddie was a spitting image of Dad and Logan was a spitting image of uncle Zayn.

‘How was school, today?’ Mom asked, pulling the car into the street, and I shrugged, buckling up.

‘Oh, you know, same shit different day,’ I replied, sitting back and folding my arms. Eddie and Logan laughed for a moment before they began talking about football, while Mom shook her head, smiling. When we finally reached home, I walked inside, dropped my bag to the ground and said, sighing dramatically loud, ‘Gosh, I’m so tired!’

But when Dad and uncle Niall came into the living room, I gasped. I ran towards them and they both opened their arms. But I crashed into uncle Niall, wrapping my arms around him, burying my head against his strong chest. I shut my eyes and smiled, listening to his heartbeat. Uncle Niall sighed into my hair, hugging me tight.

‘Well, that didn’t hurt at all,’ Dad said, half joking, half serious, and rubbing his chest, as if I had just given him a mini heart attack.

Uncle Niall laughed loudly and I felt the vibrations of his laugh ran through his chest. Uncle Niall’s laugh, his touch and his warmth always sent shivers down my spine. But then, he gently let me go and told everyone in his lovely Irish accent, ‘Guys, there’s someone I want you to meet.’ I frowned, stepping back. I didn’t like the sound of this. And then, a tall brunette joined everyone in the living room. She stood next to uncle Niall, touching his arm, and I glared. ‘Guys,’ uncle Niall began with a big smile on his face. ‘This is my new girlfriend, Dalia.’

What do you think of Emma's world so far!? Marlboro. :) xx
