11. The Band Mates

Dad opened the front door and Niall came in. I was at the top of the stairs. The upstairs floor was dark, so, Dad and Niall couldn’t see me. I sat down with my back against the wall, hugged my knees and listened.

‘Hey, mate, are you feeling any better?’ Niall asked.

‘No,’ Dad said simply. ‘I miss my wife and I want her back.’

Niall chuckled. ‘Then, call her and tell her to come home, Haz.’

Dad sighed. ‘I told her to throw Liam’s letter away, mate, and she said no! And then, I told her not to come back until she throws it away and she said fine!’ Dad groaned. ‘After all these years, she’s still the only person who can make me so angry.’

‘We can talk about it if you want, Haz, but first, I need to talk to Emma for a moment,’ Niall said, heading to the stairs.

And at that, Dad’s face hardened. ‘You’re not going upstairs, mate,’ Dad said, grabbing Niall’s arm.

Niall looked over his shoulder. ‘Haz, I’ll be back in a sec. I really need to see if Emma’s okay.’ Niall probably still thought that Jimmy was in my bedroom.

‘You’re not going up to my daughter’s room, Niall,’ Dad said through his teeth, tightening his grip on Niall’s arm. Niall was taken aback. My eyes widened. What was that all about?

‘Okay, mate, I won’t, calm down,’ Niall said and Dad let him go.

‘Hey, Dad,’ Eddie said, coming in the room. ‘I’ll go to The Billiard Room café with Jimmy, yeah? Hi, uncle Niall.’

‘Hey, Eddie,’ Niall replied, crossing his arms across his chest. Then, he asked, frowning, ‘You are friends with Jimmy Shadows?’

‘Yeah, and he’s already at the café, so, I got to run, uncle,’ Eddie replied, rushing out. Niall let out a sigh of relief, because, he knew now that Jimmy was nowhere near me and that I was safe. Then, he looked at Dad and asked, ‘You want to tell me what was that all about, Haz? Why don’t you want me to talk to Emma?’

Dad put his hands into his pockets. ‘Emma has had a crush on you since she was five years old, so, I don’t want you alone with her right now. She’s very vulnerable because of what’s going on between Bess and me.’

I put my hand over my mouth, holding back a gasp. Dad knew? Oh no. Dad knew!

‘You are afraid I may take advantage of her?’ Niall asked. He was shocked.

‘In all honesty, yes, I am,’ Dad replied.

‘Harry, I love Emma,’ Niall said. ‘I care about her and I would never hurt her.’

‘I know you love her, mate,’ Dad replied. ‘But I think you love her a little too much. I’ve seen the way you look at my daughter. She’s my little girl and I want you to stay away from her until Bess comes back.’ Niall was speechless and he looked so hurt. Dad put a hand on Niall’s shoulder and went on, ‘Look, I’m sorry, but you have to understand. You’re twenty years older than her.’

‘Harry, we’ve been best mates since we were teenagers,’ Niall said. ‘Do you really think I would do anything to jeopardize our friendship, or, the future of One Direction? I’ll never touch Emma. Trust me.’

‘I guess not, mate. I’m so tired. And I miss Bess,’ Dad said, rubbing his eyes with his thumb and forefinger.

‘Listen, Haz. I’ll stay away from Emma for as long as you want me to, yeah? Don’t worry,’ Niall promised, patting Dad on the shoulder.

WHAT? NO! I cried inside. I got up, went to my room, fell on my stomach on the bed and called Mom.

Hello? Emma? What is it, darling? Are you okay?’ Mom asked, worried. It was almost ten at night.

‘Mom, please come home. I need you. Please,’ I cried over the phone.

Mom sighed. ‘I’m sorry, baby, I can’t. You’re Dad’s very angry with me,’ she said. She sounded really depressed. But at that moment, I was selfish, so, I groaned, hanging up the phone. After Niall left, Dad came to my room. He called my name softly, but I pretended to be asleep, and he went away. It was official. I hated my Dad.

*

At school the next day, Allie, Noah and I were sitting on the grass. It was a sunny day, but windy, too. It was lunch time, so, Allie was munching on an apple, reading a book, Noah was eating the biggest sandwich I had ever seen and I was nibbling on a granola bar, thinking about Niall and the promise he had made to Dad. I let out a deep sigh. I was lost in my thoughts the whole day. Allie lifted her eyes up. Noah was already looking at me.

‘What’s wrong, Em?’ Noah asked, putting his sandwich down. ‘You’ve been quiet all day.’

‘Are you sad about your parents?’ Allie asked, closing her book. I shrugged, not answering their questions, and my eyes fell on Jimmy. He was sitting with Eddie, Logan and a few other boys a few feet away. They were talking and laughing loudly. They were the most popular boys in school, so, all the students’ eyes were on them. Allie followed my gaze, and when I got up, she realized what I was going to do, so, she said, ‘Emma, don’t do it! You’re hurting right now, so, please, don’t do anything reckless!’ I had told her everything that had happened between Jimmy and me. But I ignored Allie and walked toward Jimmy.

I stood in front of Jimmy with my arms folded and he looked up with a grin on his face. He got up, put his hands into his grey trousers’ pockets and said, ‘You can’t keep away from me, Styles, can you?’ His white shirt was opened a few buttons and his sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, revealing veiny forearms.

‘Can I talk to you for a minute?’ I asked. ‘In private?’

At that, his immature friends began whistling and wiggling their eyebrows, but Jimmy told them to shut up. ‘Follow me,’ Jimmy told me and the two of us walked next to each other away from everyone. We stood opposite each other under a tree.  ‘What’s up?’ Jimmy asked, looking at me with his bedroom eyes. His hair was styled into a messy quiff.

‘I want you to make me bad,’ I told him.

Jimmy chuckled. ‘I’m sorry, babe, what?’

‘My Mom used to smoke, so, I want you to teach me how to smoke. And I want you to teach me how to drink alcohol, too,’ I said.

‘Ah, I can’t do that, babe, sorry,’ Jimmy said simply, shrugging.

‘Why not?’ I asked irritably.

‘Because, no matter what you think about me, Emma, I really like you,’ Jimmy said sincerely. He went on. ‘Smoking and drinking are bad. That’s who I am, it’s not who you are.’

‘I wish everyone would stop protecting me!’ I protested. Jimmy grinned, looking at my face, staying silent. ‘Make me bad and I’ll sleep with you,’ I told him, looking him dead in the eye. At that, the muscle in his jaw jumped and he swallowed with difficulty.

Jimmy stared at me for a moment. Then, he said, ‘Fine. Meet me at The Billiard Room café tonight at eight.’

‘Okay,’ I nodded.

‘You better not chicken out of this, Styles,’ Jimmy warned. ‘I always get what I want.’

‘I won’t chicken out, I promise,’ I said.

Jimmy chuckled, shaking his head, and then, he said over his shoulder, walking away, ‘I’ll see you tonight, then.’

And so, operation piss Daddy off had just begun.
