DENVER’S POV

“Jacob, stay in your room. Mommy needs to talk to daddy about something important.” I stood there, sucking my thumb like the six year old I was.

“But Mommy-“I begged, wanting her to stay in the room with me.

“Karen, get down here now! We need to talk!” my father yelled up the stairs. My mother looked scared.

“Jacob, I’ll be back in five minutes, just stay here.” She kissed me on the cheek and went downstairs.

I began sobbing. Lately my father seemed angrier. He never spoke to me, just glared at me. I tiptoed to the foot of the stairs to hear what they were saying.

“Lately, all you do is stay with the kid! He’s six years old Karen! You’re babying him. You don’t even talk to me anymore. You just act nervous.” My dad was yelling at mom.

“Dylan, I-“she said timidly, but her off.

“You’re cheating on me, aren’t you? I always knew you were a dirty slut.”

“I’m not cheating on you!” she yelled, sobbing. Suddenly there was a slap and a thud.

“Don’t you dare lie to me Karen!”

“I’m not lying to you, Dylan! I’ve been nothing but faithful to you. Stop!”

“Your punishment isn’t over! How many people have you slept with? You always come home late on weekends. “

“I have a night job, remember? I work as a bartender from 9 PM to 2 AM. I am trying to help pay the rent!”

“Maybe you’re bringing in tips because you act like a slut in front of the customers!” I looked around the corner and saw my dad punch mom in the face, stomach, and in the thigh. I gasped and ran up the stairs to my room. I couldn’t believe what I had just seen. Suddenly the door creaked and my mom walked in, smiling sweetly like nothing had happened. She had bruises on her cheek and eye.

“Mommy, why did daddy hit you?” I said curiously.

“Oh, honey it was just an accident. Daddy didn’t mean to.” She replied, fixing my pajamas and leading me to bed.

“That wasn’t an accident. I saw him yell and the he hit you on purpose.” I frowned at her. She laughed as a tear came down her face.

“Jacob, did you see what happened?” she said suspiciously.

“Yes, and daddy shouldn’t hurt you like that.”

“Jacob, you need to promise that you won’t tell daddy or anyone what you saw. You’ll get me and you hurt even more.”

I looked at her and suddenly I felt protective. Protective over her and over anyone that was going to get treated like that. I wanted my dad to be stopped.

“I won’t let daddy hurt you again.”

“Honey, don’t do that, you’ll get hurt.”

“No mommy!”

“KAREN!” my dad yelled again.

“Honey, go to sleep.”

“But mommy-“

“No. I’ll be okay!” she smiled weakly and walked out of the room.

I shot up from bed immediately. I hated dreams about my past. But I reminded myself it was my past that brought me where I was today. I got up and ran my fingers through my hair. I felt something plastically brush past my ear. I looked down at my wrist and saw it was wrapped with plastic wrap. A confused look crossed my face before ripping the plastic wrap off my wrist. On my wrist was a butterfly. A pink, butterfly, and it was a permanent tattoo. I had an idea of who had done it. I got up and punched the wall. I knew she was angry about the tattoo, but I didn’t think she would get revenge at night. I just thought she would punch me in the face. I ran to Francis’s room and pounded on the door. After a minute he opened the door. His hair was disheveled and he looked tired.

“Dude, it’s like 3 AM, what do you want?” Francis said with a yawn.

“Look what she did to my wrist!” I lifted it up and as soon as he saw it he snorted .

“Nice tattoo, dude!” he said, holding back a laugh. I groaned.

“IT’S PERMANENT!!!! SHE GAVE ME A PINK BUTTERFLY ON MY WRIST AND IT’S PERMANENT!” I yelled. I started to storm off to her room.

“Whoa, dude!” Francis said, following me. “Chill, out! You did give her the Runaways tattoo!”

“Yeah, well I gave her that tattoo to save her life! If I didn’t give her the tattoo the Vipers would come back and kill her!”

“I know, I know! But listen, she didn’t mean harm. In six months, you can tattoo something over it.” By this time we were at the door.

“I’M GOING TO KILL HER!”

“Dude, she was just repaying you for tattooing her without permission.”

“How many times do I need to tell you? SHE TATTOED A BUTTERFLY ON MY WRIST!”

“Denver, just go to bed!” Francis tried to hold me back.

“NO! I AM SO PISSED OFF! NOW LET ME IN THE ROOM!”

Suddenly, the door opened to reveal Nothing, looking very tired and extremely annoyed. Before I could do anything to yell at her, she cupped my cheek in her hand and kissed me. My eyes widened in shock. Just as I was about to kiss her back, she pulled back, still looking annoyed.

“Now will you two shut up so I can get some sleep? Jesus!” she said before closing the door. I stood there, still shocked. So was Francis.

“Uh…I’m just going to go to bed now…” I said, still shocked from her kissing me.

“Me too…” Francis said. We both walked back to our rooms. I went into my room and passed out, still unsure what to say the next morning.

*NEXT  MORNING*

I got up and tiredly walked down to the kitchen, making a bowl of cereal. I walked into the living room to find everyone sitting around eating breakfast.

“Took you long enough.” Nothing said.

“Good morning to you too…” I said in a faked happy tone.

“Yeah, well I expect you saw your new tattoo.” She said as she fist pounded Cara. Oh, so there were two in the act.

“Wait, what tattoo?” Paul asked, confused.

“This.” I said showing them my wrist. All them started laughing.

“I made up for it.” Nothing said with a smirk.

“Wait, what did you do?” Jackson said, suspicious.

“It’s not that big of a deal.” Nothing muttered.

“NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL?!?!?!?! YOU KISSED DENVER! THAT IS SO A BIG DEAL!” Cara yelled.

“Thank you Cara, for that wonderful announcement.” Nothing muttered.

“Wait are you to-“ Paul said before I cut him off.

“We are not dating! I just kissed him because he was yelling outside my door and I needed him to shut up.” Nothing explained.

“Yeah, well next time you plot revenge, don’t give me a permanent tattoo!” I said. She just nodded.

“No promises!” she said with a grin.

It was going to be a long career with this girl in the gang.
