9. Ch. 7 FINALLY!!!

PERSEPHONE’S POV

I grinned to myself as I baked the cupcake for Darcy, placing my little “surprise” inside the batter. It was a chocolate cupcake filled with enough cyanide to kill five people. Wren loved Darcy, and it was my job to ruin it for him. I was evil, and it was my job. Besides, he knew better than to get involved with the girls who came to say here. He always reminded me that Hannah was a friend and there was nothing going on between them. I knew that, considering she was 14, but they were friends and that’s enough. Darcy should be grateful. I’m killing her painlessly before she has to go to a school full of obnoxious wannabes whose highlight in life is homecoming prom. I placed the cyanide into the flour mix and added the dry mixture into the batter. I tasted it, considering I was already dead, and smiled at my creation. I poured it into the cupcake tray and placed it in the oven. I left the kitchen to find some more cyanide for the icing.

SETH’S POV

I paused my music and got up from my bed. My nose still hurt from getting punched by that girl. Although, I was used to being punched; I had been bullied occasionally, and snickered at by popular students at my old school. As I shook the days out of my mind I thought of the girl; who was she and how did she get into our house. Darcy was acting odd lately and I had heard her talking to herself in her room. Maybe she was talking to the girl. She was beautiful, but if Darcy had made friends with her that would mean she is off limits. I shook the thought out of my head and walked down the stairs. I was about to turn to the living room when a delicious smell filled my nose. I inhaled deeply and discovered it was the aroma of cupcake batter.

I licked my lips and ran to the kitchen. I wondered who had baked the cupcakes. Maybe it was Darcy, but she hadn’t baked in years. My eyes found the small bowl with batter along the sides. So the cupcake was already in the oven? I grabbed a spoon from the silverware drawer and got ready to lick the bowl clean when I heard a creak behind me. I turned around and met eyes with the girl who punched me in the face, holding a pill bottle filled with cyanide pills.

PERSEPHONE’S POV

When I ran back to the kitchen clutching the cyanide pills I saw that someone had discovered the leftover batter in the moments I was gone. All I saw was the back of him. He had messy blonde hair with brown roots and a tight blue shirt on. His jeans clung to him loosely. Even from the back I could tell he was extremely h-wait, stop it Persephone, you cannot fall in love with a human, you are a poltergeist and nobody cares about you. I waited for the careless teenager to try the batter and collapse onto the floor. I took a small step-big mistake- and a creak rang through the kitchen. The young man stiffened up and turned around to see me.

“Hey, you punched me in the face.” He said grinning, and then looked at my bottle of cyanide pills. He frowned. “What are those pills for? You know they kill you, right?” Great, now I need to think of an excuse.

“They’re not real. Now I thought I told you and your family to beat it.” I threatened, mentally face-palming myself for my ridiculous excuse.

“Nope,” he said, popping the “p”, “you said that you were here to make our lives a living hell. Too bad you’re too late. High school is already my designated living hell. Also, you need to get out of our house.” I looked at him confused. He thought high school was hell? Just like me? No Persephone, you do not like him. Just leave him.

“I give two damns what high school is like for you. I hated high school too, and you think people like us are going to be big and famous, but no, we end up either dead, homeless, arrested, or stuck in a god damn house for all eternity.” I took a deep breath and backed away from him. Maybe I shouldn’t kill him. Darcy, on the other hand, had it coming. Keeping my hostility, I turned around and walked away, but not before saying, “By the way, I wouldn’t eat that batter if I were you.”

                “Why not?” he said suspiciously.

I turned around and smirked at him. “Unless you were planning on killing yourself instantly, I wouldn’t touch the batter, okay pretty boy.”

“Hey, I have a name!” he said.

“And that is?” I said impatiently. I had icing to make and so little time before Hannah warned her down in that hellhole they call a basement.

“My name is Seth. What’s your name?” he said with another grin.

“Would you wipe that smug little grin off your face? And my name is Persephone, Seth.” I walked away but then decided to leave him dumbfounded and confused, so I vanished just as I passed over the doorway to the kitchen. I waited until he left for his room then cleaned out the batter and took the cupcake out of the oven. Then I made the icing and wrote “I’m Sorry” in Wren’s handwriting. I mixed a cyanide pill into powdered sugar and sprinkled that on as well. I smiled at my handicraft and walked to the basement door. I placed the cupcake at the foot of the door, knocked twice, and vanished.

DARCY’S POV

“Hi, I’m Hannah.” The girl, Hannah, said to me nervously. She held out her hand and I shook it cautiously. At this point I assumed everyone in our house who wasn’t my family or the witness protection guy was another ghost.

“I’m Darcy. You must be one of the ghosts here.” I replied, controlling my stammering. I still wasn’t used to this whole ghosts in the house.

                “Yeah.” She said rather quietly.

“So how come you’re in pajamas and Wren is in normal clothes?” I said after a long awkward silence.

“Ghosts take the form of what they looked like right before they died. Wren was about to move out of the house and she pushed him down the stairs. She killed me because I was friends with Wren and she smuggled me while I was asleep. I was fourteen.” I gasped a little at this. She was fourteen? I blinked back tears as memories of my almost-death flooded my mind.

“By she I’m guessing you mean Persephone.” Hannah winced at her name. “Why does she kill people?”

“Well,” Hannah said, “she didn’t mean to when she first got trapped in the house, but when she killed Wren he became good and she became evil. She hated him for trying to leave her and killed anyone he cared about to hurt him. “

“But Wren doesn’t care about me.” I said defensively, “He just doesn’t want me to die. I mean he wants none of my family to die too.”

“Darcy,” she said, stifling a chuckle, “Wren doesn’t just like you, he is head-over-heels in love with you.”

“How do you know?” I said questioningly.

“He told me earlier today. Listen Darcy you should just be-“she was interrupted by two knocks on the door of the basement. I walked up to the door.  I pulled the door open and looked down to see a cupcake sitting at the foot of the door. I picked it up and brought it down to Hannah, who eyed it suspiciously. I looked at the message on it: I’m Sorry. Maybe it was from Wren. He seemed so nice. i was about to take a bite of the cupcake when Hannah grabbed it from my hands.

“Hey!” I said accusingly, “What did you do that for?” I picked up the cupcake once again and handed it to her.

“I was just about to say you should be careful.” Hannah said, eyeing the cupcake as if it was going to explode.

“I am being careful. Look, the cupcake says ‘I’m Sorry’. Maybe Wren made it as an apology for Persephone trying to kill me.” I explained.

“Darcy, Wren can’t cook. Can you at least let me test it? I’m already dead anyways.” Hannah took a bite of the cupcake and literally one second later she collapsed onto the floor. I rushed to her side and shook her to get her to wake up. Suddenly, as quick as she collapsed, she shot up from the ground breathing heavily.

“Just what I thought,” Hannah muttered, ”This cupcake has enough cyanide to kill ten grown men. You would’ve died instantly.”

“So,” I said, trying to change the subject, “Tell me everything you know about this house.”

WREN’S POV

“Persephone?” I yelled through the hallway, “Where are you? We need to talk!” I couldn’t have another death in this house, and I could smell her famous cyanide cupcakes from the attic. If someone stumbled upon the batter, they would die instantaneously. I had saved Hannah from eating that cupcake, but the old man who died here stumbled upon it and ate the batter.  I continued callin for her and then heard the door creak open. It was Persephone.

“What do you want, Wren?” she said, tapping her foot impatiently. I saw a pill bottle filled with cyanide pills clutched in her hand.

“What are you doing with those?” I said suspiciously. She grinned back at me.

“I’m just making cupcakes and had to get some-“she examined the pill bottle carefully then continued, “painkiller. I hit my head on a cupboard.”

“You can’t feel pain. Are you making your ‘special’ cupcakes?” I retorted, making air quotes around when I said ‘special’.

“No, why would I make poisoned cupcakes? It’s not like I’ve shown a desire to kill anyone today.” Persephone replied sarcastically before vanishing. I rolled my eyes and decided to make sure no one would accidentally find the batter. I passed Darcy’s brother’s room-Seth, I recall was his name-and suddenly I received a feeling of hope. I wondered if Persephone learned to love him, we could all move on from this place. I remembered though that Persephone pledged to never love anyone again. I sighed, hoping Darcy could help us, especially Hannah. She was so young.

I walked into the kitchen and hid in the corner when I heard a creaking sound. I looked up to see it was the boy Seth. He had spotted the batter. I looked to see Persephone grinning, waiting for Seth to eat the batter. She looked at me and shushed me followed by mouthing ‘or else’. Then, to my surprise, Persephone blew her cover. She made the floorboards creak. A conversation between the two ensued before Persephone vanished from Seth. I stifled a chuckle. Persephone was flirting with Seth. I felt a twinge of jealousy, but being the good person in the house, I replaced the feeling with happiness for everyone that maybe Persephone will be able to move on and so will we.

I watched Persephone finish the cupcake and write ‘I’m Sorry’ in my handwriting. I became worried that Hannah would be fooled by this and tell Darcy the cupcake was made by me and give her the okay to eat it. I disappeared into the basement and hid in a corner. Hannah had just swatted the cupcake out of Darcy’s hand, and showed her it was poisoned by eating it, collapsing, and coming back alive because she was a ghost. I smiled, happy Darcy was okay.

“So, tell me everything you know about this house.” Darcy piped in. I smiled and stepped out of the shadows. Darcy and Hannah jumped then relaxed, realizing it was me. I smiled and gave Darcy a hug then did the same to Hannah.

“So, you want to know everything about this house?” I asked.

DARCY’S POV

`               I was completely speechless after Wren explained everything about Persephone and the house and him and Hannah and the three other ghosts.

“Listen Darcy,” Wren said sympathetically, “you should go to bed. This is a lot to take in for one day. Plus you have school tomorrow.” I sighed heavily, unhappy to have to start over at a new high school. I looked at Wren and nodded, curling up on my sleeping bag I brought down. I felt Wren kiss my forehead before leaving and I smiled to myself. I had almost died twice today, discovered that I was able to see, touch, and hear ghosts, and my brother had been beat up, but in that very moment when Wren kissed me on the forehead, I felt like no one-not even a poltergeist like Persephone-could hurt me. For the first time since I almost got kidnapped, I felt safe.
