26. Ch. 26

After I got home, and once it hit night time, I dressed up in my typical tight black dress and black pumps, curled my hair and tied it to the side, and hailed a taxi to take to the club. I made sure my bag had cigarettes in them so I wouldn’t be alone tonight.

When I got there, I saw the boys all there, but I tried to ignore them. I made my way to the bar where the bartender looked surprised at my presence.

“I haven’t seen you in awhile there.”

“Yeah, I know.”

“The usual?” I nodded and he went to go make my drink. A few seconds later, he placed a cup in front of me. “So what happened? Talk to me.” I glanced over my shoulder at the curly haired boy I had come to love.

“He happened…”

“What; did he break up with you or something?”

“No…I broke up with him.”

“So why are you upset?”

“I’m upset because it was forced upon me; it was him or my career.”

“Can’t you always get another job…?”

“Simon could ruin my career…forever…with any other company.”

“That’s fucked up; excuse me for a minute.” I nodded as he went to go help another customer. I ran my finger around the rim of my glass while I listened to the bumping music blare through thr speakers. I sighed and looked around, my eyes landing on Harry. I watched as he danced with a blonde, curly haired girl. A knot formed in my stomach but soon she excused herself and started walking towards me. I quickly turned away and focused back on my drink.

“Hey, I just wanted to say I like your shoes.” I looked up and saw the same girl dancing with Harry.

“Uh…you’re wearing the same ones.” I pointed out.

“Why do you think I like them?” She giggled and held her hand out to me. “I’m Rita.”

“Bethany.” Rita’s jaw dropped and she froze.

“You’re Bethany?!” She practically shouted.

“Excuse me?”

“You’re THE Bethany?! Oh my god…”

“Excuse me…?” I said for the second time, trying to figure this all out.

“Oh my god…I’m like Harry’s best friend! He’s told me all about you and how much he likes you! Oh my god…I heard about what happened from Harry’s side; what’s your side?!” Her words practically were a ringing in my ear they came out of her mouth so fast.

“It isn’t important.” I finally said, looking down.

“You still like him; it’s obvious.”

“It was him or my career.”

“So you picked your work?”

“What choice did I have?”

“You could’ve always told Simon to fuck off, you know. He likes people to stand up to him. He feels it makes them stronger and can do better in the field.”

“Then why did he tell me to leave Harry?”

“To test you; you failed his test. He always does this to the guys.”

“What if he was serious with me?”

“Simon? Serious? Oh please…Harry’s right over there- go make up with him.”

“I don’t know…”

“Whatever; that’s all on you but…think about what I said at least.”

“I will; thanks Rita.”

“No problem, Bethany. It was nice to meet you.” I nodded as she waved and walked away.

“Who was that?” I turned and the bartender was back by me.

“Harry’s best friend…who knows about me.”

“What’d she want? Did she come to bitch at you about breaking her best friends’ heart?” I giggled and rolled my eyes.

“No…to tell me to get back with him because Simons’ opinion doesn’t matter.”

“Well…she has a point. Excuse me again.” I nodded and looked back at Harry who had half a smile on while he danced with Rita. Maybe Rita had a point…

I shook the thought away and made my way outside to smoke a cigarette. I lit it up and seconds later, Zayn came outside, practically bumping into me.

“Sorry…oh, hey Bethany.”

“Hey Zayn.” I whispered, avoiding eye contact.

“How have you been?”

“Better.”

“I know.”

“How do you know?”

“Be honest with yourself Bethany…you miss him.”

“Why do you and Rita feel the need to rag on me about Harry all night? I came here to forget…”

“You met Rita?”

“She came to compliment my shoes and when I told her my name, she figured out who I was.” Zayn nodded and took a drag of his cigarette.

“Well…you shouldn’t forget.” Zayn said before walking to the other side of the roped off, outside section to finish his cigarette. As soon as my cigarette was gone, I hailed a cab, only tipsy, and went home not really in the mood anymore.
