9. Nine.

"Dinner will be served." Teresa announced, piling immense chunks of medium rare steak and cooked asparagus onto the porcelain plates.

"May I.. uh.. be excused?" Holden asked as he struggled with the simple question.

"But dinner has just started. Please take a seat."

"But Grandma Teresa.. I was busy.."

"Don't tell me you were reading that goddamn book, boy. Because you really don't need any knowledge whatsoever right now. What you need to do is mind your own business. Besides, how the hell are you going to make it in this world?"

The surroundings around William vanished without a trace as Joshua's voice was audible.

I'm here.

Joshua, where are you?

I'm dead.

Did you hear my question? Where are you?

Reality had come back to William, and all hell had broken loose.

"He's here! He's here!" Teresa bellowed as she rushed to the front room of the house. Immediately following the huge commotion, William's eyes met Joshuas, clear as day. "Oh, two new bloods in one day! This is wonderful!" Teresa squawked.

"Grandma Teresa.. Will you just.."

Interrupting Holden's remarks, Teresa's tone of voice had drastically changed. "NO! I WILL NOT LET YOU READ!" Her facial expression had grown into an atrocious, unrecognizable face of a woman.

"I guess this was the wrong time. Come on, you don't want to see her mad." Joshua whispered.

"But why? What's happening to her face?"

"Her face can change to the mood she is feeling. Say if she's happy, it's cheerful. If it's mad, all hell literally breaks loose. It could be so bad to the point where fire erupts. For some reason, we're the only family that has the ability to do this."

Teresa walked in casually from upstairs— her face covered with fresh tears and signs of hair tearing, which resembled the appearance of a woman who just got her heart crushed.

"I do believe we have to get back to dinner. Now everyone, get back to the dining room and take your seats."

As Teresa walked into the room, Holden slowly took baby steps down the stairs with a new set of bruises on his face, along with a black eye. William was appalled— Holden's face was covered with various other scars and bruises. How did he get them? That's the mystery.

"What happened to your face, Holden?" Joshua asked.

"I can't tell you."

'Yes, you can. For the love of god.."

Teresa interrupted, "Are you all coming?"

"I don't know why did it." Holden whispered to Joshua. "I'd rather rot in soil like the others than live here."

A full blown on argument was going on during dinner. The whole quarrel was over Holden's heavily bruised face.

"How could you do that to him?" a concerned Joshua asked.

"Why in the bloody hell are you assuming I did it?" Teresa said, her face showing signs of stress.

"Because you're a bipolar mess and you know it!"

"It's not polite to assume things.. Behave. Or you'll regret it."

As soon as the two could say another word, Julia entered the room dressed in nothing but a black robe.

"Did I miss something?" she asked.

"You should be glad you missed it, Meredith. Because I swear to God, I was ready to set this whole goddamn place to nothing but flames."

"Call me Julia." she said. "I've gotten accustomed to this body."

"I see you're enjoying it." Teresa said.

"Why yes, I certaintly am."

"Well, enough. It is time for the main course. Bring in more silverware!" Teresa announced.

Surprisingly, waiters entered the dining room dressed in formal attire as they began to bring in more of the food. As they exited, everyone immediately began to eat with more debates than before. All of the talking became background noise to William as Joshua's voice took over his thoughts.

We need to get outta here.

How the hell are we supposed to do that?

You think I know? Look, the best thing we could do is search through the private library. I have the key.

How did you find that key?

The drawer was open when I came in. I saw that it was the key to a library, so.. Let's find it.

"May I be excused?" Joshua suddenly asked.

"Dear boy, you've just arrived. I think it's time we all catch up a bit." Julia said.

"No, we don't have to. I just need to speak to William for a second." he pulled at the sleeves of William's shirt as he quickly directed him to the back of the mansion.

"Wouldn't it be upstairs?" William asked.

"I study this kind of shit, old man." Joshua said. "I think I know my way around this house." he unlocked the double wooden doors with the silver key. It opened to reveal a vast collection of literature.

"Jesus christ, our psycho family has a Barnes N Nobles on them." Joshua joked.

William rummaged through the variety of books on the neatly stacked bookshelf, only to find a leather bound journal with writing that filled each page up.

"I found some kind of diary." William said. "Would you like me to read it?"

"Yeah, but.. Whos journal is that?"

"Someone named.. Mary Ann Cale."

"Mary Ann Cale? I've read about her. Apparently, she was murdered here. Read it now."

The first page read:

It is my second day at this stranj new playse. It is fansey. Claudia git me this leather book. I do not no were she found it. Leather is rare. Writing this is really hard. This pencil is breaking. I.."

"I guess she stopped writing for this entry after that paragraph, but there's more." William said.

"Okay, read it."

Today my father kissed me. He is not my real father but he's the one that saved me from the orphanage. He told me that I shud not tell Claudia. He said that he would be in trouble for touching me. He said that it would ruin Claudia. They love each other so why would he kiss me. I have to stop. He is coming."

" Is there a date on that entry?" Joshua asked.

"No, but you could probably make an inference from what year this was.. I mean, it's poorly written. She has several misspellings, the punctuation is terrible.. I don't know why she would write this."

"Let's just get the hell out of this old library." Joshua suggested.

As William took a quick glance behind him, he noticed the leather journal was opened to another page.

"I think I'll just meet you in a bit, Josh."

"You need to hurry up. They're waiting for us. Come on, we're not allowed in here."

"I don't care. I need to find out what happened to this girl."

"Okay, but just remember this. You're probably not going to like what you find. My guess is that the results will be pretty disturbing."

As William began to apprehend the words that were scribbled across the page, the headline of the entry caught William's eye.

"Help before I die." It read.
