Freedom Isn't Only Physical(One Direction Fanfic)

Mary(also known as Mars Bars) was one of the girls you would consider popular. She had a normal life, better than the average person would--but when her father is murdered during a day at work, her mother becomes an empty shell. After a night the both regret, Mary leaves her house in search of a new life--and just so happens to run into five boys that change her life.
(Fanfic about One Direction... and a specific boy. Taken at a realistic pace(I hope). I don't own the cover image!)

28. I Can't Stand This

Mascara tears trailed down my pale face, drawing thin lines of black. My eyeshadow was smudged above my eyes from my constant rubbing. I wiped my nose with my hoodie sleeve, clutching my knees as I rocked back and forth against the brick wall.

Why me? Why now? Everything had been so settled... I thought I was set, I thought to myself as I reached over, grabbing for my can of beer but finding it empty.

"Damn it!" I shouted, crushing it in my fist and hurling it towards the barren road. It clattered harmless and I flinched as it scraped along. The light that sat on the side of the road began to flicker, making me edgy. My stomach buzzed pleasantly, but the beer had no effect on my mind.

Yet.

Reaching for my phone, I scrolled through the names until I saw 'Emma KayOkay' and clicked 'call.' A few seconds later, she picked up.

"What do you want, Mars? You are aware it's almost 1 in the morning and we have work tomorrow?" she mumbled sleepily.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just come down to my apartment, 'kay? 'Kay," I replied, pressing the 'End' call as soon as I finished.

In a matter of ten minutes, a pajama-clad Emma with flip-flops on and a messy bun came up to my side. "What... could you possibly want at an hour like this?" she spat, clearly angry as she settled her hand on her hip, her eyes red from a lack of sleep.

"Come with me," I ordered, wiping away the black lines before she could see anything. I grabbed her wrist, dragging her down to the bar. When we arrived there, she looked dumb-founded.

"Are you kidding me, Mars? Seriously? No way. I'm in pajamas and you're under-age. Are you thinking clearly-- ... are you crying?" she asked, the anger in her eyes suddenly demolishing.

"No," I growled, shaking my head and pushing her forward. "Please--just... get me something?"

"You're crazy. No." She spun and began to walk away, and maybe it was the beer or maybe it was the fact she was angry, but I swore I saw steam coming out from her ears.

"Please!" I shouted, running after her (and maybe stumbling over my own feet a tad...) and grabbing her arm. I spun her around, suddenly regretting that decision as her eyes lit up and she slapped my hand away.

"You're so fucked up, Mary," she sighed. "Whatever. Come with me and I'll see what I can do--as long as you promise to tell me what happened?"

"Promise."

Somehow, I convinced her to give me a few beers at her house that she so conveniently had. Yay for having a legal best-friend who liked beer! I told her about how I got evicted. Yeah, I got evicted. For some reason, they decided to kick me out simply because I repainted the walls... which I had permission to do. Yeah, it was kinda messed up.

Oh, well. Who needed a place to stay, anyway?

"And now, I'm gonna loose me job," I rambled, drinking down my third beer. "They'll fire me 'cause this. I am a bad employee, and now I don't have anywhure to stay? My record is all messed up, I'm so done... Damn." My head was long gone, the tears freely falling down my cheeks. My words slurred and I refused to move from my spot right beside the door.

"You can stay here, Mars. They won't know. I'll call in sick for you tomorrow. Okay? It will all be fine..."

I waved my hand. "Whatever, Emma. I dun't care. It's not worff it anymure." I stumbled to my feet, using my knees as a support. "I'm goin' out," I stated, swinging the door open and stumbling down the walkway.

"Oh, no you aren't! You're wasted!" Emma exclaimed, catching my wrist. I looked up, scowling at her. Suddenly, her eyes seemed to flash and features transform into Alexandra...

"Stay away from meee!" I wailed, raising my hand and slapping her grip away. I spun, stumbling quickly down the hallway and yanking my phone out of my pocket. I held it in a death-grip as I ran from my best-friend.

"I can't do 'his anymure, Zaaayn," I dawdled, tears streaming down my face as I looked at my phone which portrayed a sleepy-eyed Zayn. I had foolishly Skyped him to talk about my problems that were way below him.

I shouldn't even being complaining, so many other people had worse. It just made me feel even worse.

"I compleen about nuffing, I am so tired of 'his... I can't anymure, Zayn. I can't stand 'his..." I sobbed, dropping my phone on the grass and throwing my body down on my side.

"Hey! Where'd you go, Mary? Get back into my view. Don't tease me like this," I heard his voice crack. "I can't stand to see you upset, Mars, please... let me see you at least."

Sobbing, I reached my shaky hand out and grabbed the phone, pulling it to me and flipping the camera towards me. My tears fell across the bridge of my nose and dripped down and I wiped them away quickly.

"Listen, babe, stop crying. I promise I will come as soon as I get the chance. I promise. Please don't cry..." he said slowly, and I saw tears well up in his eyes. I sobbed more because of this.

"I'm so surry, Zaayn, I didn't meeaan to throw my prublemms on you... I will goo now," I dismissed, quickly pressing 'End' even though I heard him scream in protest.
