Up All Night

Cara's a Directioner. She's one of the minority that won't freak out when she meets One Direction. And that's what makes one of the boys fall for her. But their love story isn't going to always be perfect. That's what makes them real and ready to stay up all night for each other.

1. What Makes You Beautiful~Liam

“Harry, come on, you need to tell Taylor good-bye!” I whisper loudly, nudging one of my best friends. “We’re supposed to be at the fan event in twenty minutes!”

Harry pushes me away as he continues to talk to Taylor Swift, his girlfriend since November.  I sigh and turn to survey the rest of the guys in our band, One Direction.  Niall is chowing down on potato crisps—what else is new?  Louis is on the phone with his girlfriend, Eleanor Calder.  Zayn is off in the bathroom, probably fixing his hair for the millionth time.

“Harry!” I complain before attempting to get Louis off the phone.

“Buzz off, Liam,” Louis mutters, not meanly.

I sigh again.  It’s kind of difficult being around Harry, Louis, and Zayn when they’re being all lovey-dovey with their girlfriends.  Danielle and I broke up in September, almost nine months ago, and I’m still getting over her.

After I exchange a glance with Niall, he takes Louis’s phone and says, “Louis has to go, Eleanor.  Bye.”  Then he ends the call.

Louis gapes at Niall, shocked.  I chuckle as Lou pulls out the Sass Mastah, and then I turn to get Harry of the phone.  This time, I’m successful and then I’m off to fetch Zayn.  At least he should be easy to get moving.  Soon, we’re out the door for another fan event where I could quite possibly go deaf and I’ll have a million more girls ask me to marry them.

During this event, Niall and I try to keep track of how many fans scream, how many cry, how many are speechless, and how many act completely normal.  Unfortunately, the latter category is the smallest.

In front of me is one of the girls who can’t even say a word.  It’s kind of annoying, but at the same time, I appreciate that she isn’t screaming.  I happen to glance over her shoulder, and I see two girls next to each other who are next in line.  The differences between them are as obvious as day and night.  One has dark blonde hair, blue eyes, a delicate dusting of freckles, and glasses.  The other is Asian with smooth black hair, pretty almond-shaped eyes, and darker skin.  The blonde is completely silent, although she has a huge smile on her face.  Her friend is bouncing with excitement.

Then it’s their turn to approach the table.  They start at Harry, who is first, and then move down to Zayn, then Louis, and finally to me.

“Hi,” I say, reaching my hand out for the CDs they hold.

The Asian girl squeals quietly.  “It’s so cool to meet you, Liam.  I’m Megan.”

“Nice to meet you, love,” I reply, signing her CD. “And you are?” I ask the blonde.

She smiles, almost shyly, and I take in her outfit—a black leather jacket, a red Angry Birds T-shirt, skinny jeans, and black boots.  My heart starts to pound a little louder.  She looks amazing, and I secretly love leather on girls.

“My name’s Carolina, but most people call me Cara,” she explains.

“That’s a pretty name,” I comment.

Then, just as timidly as her smile, Cara asks, “Could I have a hug?”

Now my heart is racing.  “Sure.”

I hug her, and if I’m not mistaken, her heartbeat is faster than it should be.  But then again, most girls get excited to meet us.

“Thanks for being so calm,” I tell Cara before she moves onto Niall. “That’s what makes fans like you beautiful.”
