Summer Love

Summer hasn't thought about what happened all those years ago for a very long time, but those memories are forced back to her when her 17-year-old daughter, Darcy, needs to write a story based on something that actually happened. Summer Love

Chapter Twenty-Six – Memories

**About Two Months Later**

My book was being released in stores TOMORROW! I was freaking out. What if people hated it? What if it didn’t sell? No Summer, stop thinking so negatively.

I continued to pace and ponder on everything that could possibly happen but then a knock on my door snapped me out of it. I quickly jogged over and opened the door to reveal Harry.

“Harry? What are you doing here? How did you find out where I live?”

“Well, I finally conned Eleanor into telling me where you live. I’m here because two months ago you told me you were too busy to hang out, but now I figure you’re not and your book comes out tomorrow. I figured you be a little stressed about it’s release, so I want to take you to a really fun club, to get your mind off things. So please, come with me?” he asked as he offered out his hand.

“Gee, I dunno Harry.” I replied, looking down at my feet, “Where is your girlfriend?”

“She is at a bachelorette party tonight. Please just come.”

“Look Harry, I don’t think that’s the best idea.”

“Summer, I get we aren’t together anymore and that you are over me and I’m over you, but I cannot lose you. I want us to be friends and friends can go out to clubs together. Come on Summer, it’ll be fun.”

I let out a deep sigh, “Fine Harry. Just let me grab my purse.”

Harry smiled and I quickly ran into my bathroom and touched up my makeup. My outfit was fine to go out to a club, so I didn’t bother to change.

The first half of the car ride was silent, but then Harry finally brought up a conversation,

“I’m really proud of you Summer. I can’t wait to buy your book.”

“Thanks. I am really excited for it’s release tomorrow. I can barely believe I made it this far.”
“I always knew you would.” Harry said and looked at me with a small smile.

We got to the club about twenty minutes later. It was pretty busy, but I guess because Harry was Harry, we got right in. No one knew we would be here, so luckily there were no paps. When we got in, we went straight to the bar, where Harry and I both ordered beers.

“So what about you?” I asked

“What about me?” Harry replied.

“What’s new in your life? How’s One Direction?”
“Oh, well there isn’t too much that’s new in my life. The guys and I are going on tour for about a year.”
“Oh that sounds like fun. When do you leave?”

“In two days, but tomorrow I am going back to Holmes Chapel to say goodbye to my mum and sister.”

“Yea. It sucks though, we will be so busy with the tour when the Teen Choice Awards are on, and so we won’t be able to perform, even though they asked us to.”
“Awe, that’s too bad.” I replied

“Well it’s good to hear that the five of you are still together and touring. You guys have been One Direction for just over seven years. It’s crazy.”
“Yea, it really is. Most bands get sick of each other at some point.”
“And you guys still haven’t?”
“Nah, we are still practically family.”

“I’m glad. I can’t picture the five of you not together.”
“Neither can I.”

We sat in silence for a few minutes. Harry quickly chugged the last sip of his beer, stood up and faced me then reached his hand out to me,

“Wanna dance?” he asked. I looked up at him and laughed,

We walked out onto the floor and started dancing together like crazy people. We were a little drunk, which is why we were dancing so badly, but we were having fun. It felt like old times, just chilling and having a good time. We continued to dance and laugh. At some point, I got a little tired, so I told Harry to stay out and dance while I went and ordered another drink. Then the DJ made an announcement,

“Okay, well now we are going to slow things down a bit. This is a song that was always requested when it was popular about five years ago. So grab someone special and dance!”

Then a familiar tune started to play,

“You know I’d fall apart without you, I don’t know how you do what you do.”

‘Wanted’ by Hunter Hayes was playing on the system. It was the song Harry had sung to me on our last night together. I smiled as the memory of Harry wrapping his arms around my waist and swaying back and forth as he sung lightly.

Then Harry’s familiar voice snapped me out of my memory,

“One last dance Summer? To our song?” he asked.

I looked up at him and he smiled and so did I. I took his hand and he led me into the middle of the dance floor. He gently placed his arms around my waist and I put mine around his neck. I rested my head on his chest as me slowly danced to the music,

“’Cause I wanna wrap you up, wanna kiss your lips, I wanna make you feel wanted…” Harry sang on my ear. This moment right here was so familiar. This moment was the reason I almost got married then didn’t, the reason I came to London, the reason I grew up. This was the last moment I was truly happy before Harry and I broke up, and so I had to live my life a little to make myself happy, but the truth is, and I could no longer deny it, was I missed Harry. Every moment I told myself that I didn’t, that I was over him, was I lie.

I bit my lip, trying to hold back the tears I felt brimming on the surface and I quickly pulled away from Harry,

“I’m sorry Harry, I need to go get some air.” And I left before he could reply.

It was cold out, a little colder than normal for a mid-October night, so I wrapped my jacket around me and held it tight. I noticed a park across the street, so I made my way over there so I could clear my head.

About ten minutes later, I heard footsteps running towards me and then someone grabbed my wrist and spun me towards them. I looked up to see Harry, so I quickly wiped away my tears and looked up,

“Oh, hey Harry.” I said as casually as I could. Harry just looked at me, his eyes full of worry,

“Summer, what’s wrong?”
“It’s nothing Harry.”

Harry let out a small laugh and led me over to a park bench, “It’s me you’re talking to Summer. I know something is up. What is it?”

“It’s just that song Harry, that moment we just had. It reminded me… it reminded me of that last day we had together.”

“I know, I thought about it too.”
“After you broke up with me that night, I still thought we’d end up together in the long haul.”
“You-you did?” he asked with a surprised tone in his voice.
“Yea. I really thought we would.”

“So did I. I wanted to be with you so bad. I was even considering going to Miami just to tell you not to get married, but I didn’t.”
“Why not?” I asked, unable to believe that Harry was actually considering do that.

“I didn’t do it because Liam told me if I did, you would never forgive me for putting you on the spot like that.”

“He’s probably right, but either way, I didn’t get married in the end.”

We sat in silence for a moment before I stood up,

“I should probably get going, I have to get up early tomorrow for my book release. Thank you for tonight Harry and good luck on your tour.” I said and started to walk away.

“Wait Summer!” Harry called. I turned to face him,

He ran up to me, “You said you believed we would get back together someday. Do you still believe it?”

“I dunno Harry. I honestly don’t.”

“What about now?” he asked. I gave him a confused look, but then he walked up to me, so close we were touching. He placed his hand on the back of my neck and started to lean in. I did too, but right before our lips met, my hand lightly pushed away his chest. He looked at me with confusion.

“I’m sorry Harry. I just- I can’t fall for you, not again. You have a girlfriend anyways, and she’s pretty, and she seems nice.” I told him, lying about the ‘nice’ part.

Harry sighed, “You’re right. She is incredibly pretty and nice. She is really smart and funny too. But, there is one thing she isn’t.”

“And what’s that?” I asked.

“She isn’t you.”

I didn’t know what to reply to that. Okay, well that’s a lie, I wanted to respond with a kiss, but I didn’t, for two reasons:
One: He has a girlfriend

Two: He is going on tour for a whole year and I don’t really have much faith in long distance relationships.

So all I did was give Harry a small smile and said,

“Good luck with your tour Harry. I know you guys will do great.”

Then I walked back home. It was midnight here, so in the USA, it would be only six in the evening. I quickly picked up the phone and dialed the number I will always call when I need someone to talk to and in spite of everything that happened, will always be there to listen and to help.

The phone was answered on the second ring,

“Noah? Hi, it’s Summer.”
“Oh hey Summer! Is everything okay? You sound upset. What happened?” he asked, genuine concern in his voice.

I told him everything that had happened, from me seeing Harry at Starbucks up until our almost-kiss.

“Wow Summer, that’s a lot to have happened in just one night.”
“I know, and I also know that I shouldn’t be calling you for this kind of stuff, it’s just you always give the best advice.”
“No Summer, it’s very okay that you called me. I still want us to be close friends. I’m not as upset about the marriage ending as I should be and I’m actually happy about that.”

I let out a small giggle, “Yea. Same here.”

“But anyways, Summer, remember when we broke up?”
“I told you that you were still young, and that you still had some life to live. Babe, you aren’t even twenty-four years old yet. I know that you love Harry and want to be with him, but walking away just now was the right thing. Sweetie, you still have a lot of time before you need to think about settling down and falling in love. So tomorrow, you are going to go and watch your book be released, write more books, become the best author ever, get your heart broken a few more times and then decide what you want to do about Harry.”

“But what if when I decide, and if I decide Harry, I’m too late?”

“If you are meant to be with Harry, then it won’t be too late.”

“Thank you Noah.”
“No problem Summer. I am really glad to hear from you, but I’m gonna let you go, as it is almost 12:30 over there.”
“Okay, goodnight Noah.”

“Night Summer.”
