26. Chapter 25

Zayn's POV

I quickly got up from my chair when I heard the lady nurse call me.

"How is she? Is she okay?" I couldn't contain my excitement as she led me down the long corridor. When we finally arrived at Room 19, I saw Cassidy through the crack in the door. She was slowly pulling her arm through sleeve of the gown. The nurse knocked. I rushed in once the door was opened.

"Sir, if you don't calm down I'm going to have to ask you to leave." She said sternly. Ignoring her, I quickly moved through the small room and over to Cassidy. Her face lit up when she saw me.

"Cassidy!" I exclaimed. It felt like forever since I last saw her, even through it's only been two hours. "I missed you." I looked at her and smiled. I wanted to hug her so bad. I walked over to her and gently moved her loose hair that fell out of her bun and kissed her forehead. She slowly sat up, suddenly gaining the strength, and grasped my hand.

"I missed you too." She smiled and looked at me. I noticed a small space on the bed so I carefully sat down next to her. Her hand was cold, and her body was drained of its color.

"Cassidy, don't die on me." I tried joking. It brought a small smile to her face but the nurse remained serious. "Sorry." I mumbled towards the nurse. She walked over to me and Cassidy.

"I'm afraid Cassidy has some serious internal bleeding and bruising, and it will be a while until she fully recovers. Until then, we ask that she stays here for about a week and a half, two weeks. Her appendix was almost ruptured due to the hard blow she received we aren't sure if should be removed yet or not. Along with the internal bleeding and bruising, she has a broken rib and a bruised pelvis, which is preventing her from sitting up properly. According to our x-rays, 'Mike' sprained her left wrist and nearly shattered her collar and jaw bone. Her spine doesn't seem to be in great condition either. I'm so sorry."

I sat still on the bed and my eyes started filling with tears of sadness and fear. "But she will be okay after everything heals, correct?" I cringed and moved my body closer to Cassidy's.

"That's the problem." She said sadly. "We aren't sure if the treatment will work correctly for all the blood she lost, and not all appendix removals are successful. The broken bones are most likely to heal properly, but the injury to her spine may paralyze her for life."

"No," I said, letting my tears fall. "No!" I yelled, covering my face. I got out of the room and ran into the hallway. "No, this can't be happening!" I screamed, sprinting out of the hospital. Anger suddenly overtook me and I clenched my fists so I wouldn't hit the wall. I walked home to relieve my anger.  "I will find you Mike, and you'll be sorry when I do!" I growled into the early morning air. It was still dark, but the sun was just coming up over the mountains in the far distance. When I arrived at my apartment, I twisted the knob. The door wouldn't open. I kicked it and it still didn't open.  I pounded on it with tight fists and banged my head on it, sighing with anger. I sank to my knees and sat on my steps. I noticed a cigarette butt lying on the ground. "Oh god." I whispered under my breath. Cassidy is smoking now, because of me. I stood up and kicked the step as more tears rolled down my face. A strong pain took over my foot as I slipped my phone from my pocket. I found Carissa in my list.

I'm sorry to bother you but would I be able to come over? -Zayn

An answer came back almost instantly, but it was a call.

"Zayn!" She said loudly. "Of course you can come over. Cassidy was supposed to be here but she never showed." She got sad for a moment, then cheered up again. "Do you need a ride?"

"Uh, sure." I said with a strange feeling in my stomach. "Come...whenever I guess." I shrugged.

"Alright, be there in ten." She said, hanging up.

I sat on the step and pulled out a cigarette from my pocket. I lit it and took in a deep breath, letting the toxins fill my lungs. I exhaled through my mouth and nose, waiting for Carissa to come. All the while, I wondered why she was so awake at five in the morning. By the time I finished my cigarette Carissa was pulling up to the curb. She waved at me and I waved back. Why was she so happy? I guess I'm only saying that because I was so miserable. I got in the passenger side and closed the door, using all my will not to slam it.

"Hey there." She said, noticing my anger. "Something wrong?"

"Hey." I mumbled. "Sorry if I woke you." I knew I obviously hadn't woke her, considering she was dressed nicely and her hair was done, plus her happy tone. I ignored her question.

"Oh no, it's fine. I've been awake since Cassidy called me." She smiled. "Are you and her alright?" She asked, keeping her eyes on the road. It was a short drive to her house, and we were already about to pull to the curb.

"Yeah, we're fine. Just a little tension before, a misunderstanding actually."

"Oh, alright." She said as she parked. We both stepped out and headed towards her porch.
