11. Ranch

I pull on my new jodhpurs, grab my hat and whip and head down the stairs.

“Ready?” Ella asks from the door.

“Yep,” I nod, following her out of the house.

“They have ten horses at this place,” She says, sipping from her coffee cup as she turns the key in the door.

“I checked it out on the website.” I get in the car and Ella joins me.

“They have a website?” I raise my eyebrows, laying my hat down on the floor.

“Hmm,” She nods as the car comes to life.

“Owned by a Mr and Mrs Whit, I think.” Ella finishes, pushing the car in to gear.

Five minutes later we're pulling up on the drive of Willow Ranches. The hot sun casts shadows over the people and horses surrounding the large fields. A large house stands to the side of it all, young boys shooting each other with water pistols surround it.

“I'll be back to pick you up at five,” She says, cutting the engine.

“Five? I thought it was an hour long lesson?” My eyebrows knit together.

“It is, but Mr Whit, or whatever his name is, said that you would make a great stablehand.” She grins at me.

“Oh, Ella!” I exclaim, throwing my arms around her.

“Thank you so much!” MY lips pull in to a huge grin.

“You deserve it, Scar. After Halo died I felt so bad that you wouldn't have the chance to be around horses again so I decided that when we moved to America you could get a job at one of the many ranches. It's one of the reasons why I choose Wrickenwridge.” Ella smiles at me.

“Now go,” She ushers me out of the car.

“Thank you, Ella.” I say before waving as she drives up.

“You must be Scarlett,” A man says, coming up from behind me. He's leading a large dapple grey horse and it obediently stands still when he stops.

“Yep,” I smile, taking him in.

“I'm Mr White,” He says.

“My son will be along in a minute to take you to the stables and show you around.” Mr White says, looking around.

“Ah, there he is.” The man smiles and waves someone over.

“Logan, this is Scarlett. The new stable-hand I was telling you about.” Logan White appears beside his father with a bridle on his shoulder.

“Hey,” He smiles and I stare at him, open-mouthed.

“I'll leave you to it,” Mr White says, pulling the horse towards one of the fields.

“Logan,” I say and he smiles again.

“You never told me that you lived on a ranch.” I state, my voice even. He shrugs,

“I never knew you were in to horses.” Logan grins at me and I roll my eyes.

“Well, let's get going.” I follow dumbfounded as Logan takes me inside a large stable block.

“Every horse has a stable and since our other stable-hand got bitten by Spirit and doesn't want to come back...” Logan bites back a smile.

“I'm going to be helping you out.” He puts the bridle on to its holder and turns to face me, rubbing his hands together.

This is Moon,” Logan says but his lips don't move.

He's not speaking to you in your head, Scar. That's just crazy.

But the butterfly.

Shut up.

I glance over the stable door at the large black thoroughbred.

“He's beautiful,” I breath, stroking his face.

“Yeah, he's mine.” Logan pats him affectionately and it's obvious they share a bond.

“You can ride him for your lesson today, my mom's taking it.” He slides the bolt open and nods at the rack of bridles and saddles.

“Grab his saddle, the black one on the right.” I grab his saddle as Logan leads Moon out with no head-collar in to the center of the stable block. I hand him the bridle and watch as he effortlessly slips it over Moon's head. Tying the reins to the rope hanging from the stable door, he turns to face me; smiling.

“You can put his saddle on whilst I go get his new girth,” Logan dissapears from the block and I’m left alone with the beautiful horse. I swing the saddle on to his back and start rearranging the stirrups.

“I don't like walking around this old and empty house, so hold my hand I’ll walk with you my dear.” I sing to myself as I fasten the buckles.

“So hold my hand I'll walk with you my dear,”

“The stairs creak as I sleep it's keeping me awake,” Logan sings with his deep voice as he reappears in the stable block. Smiling, I continue.

“It's the house telling you to close your eyes. Some days I can't even dress myself,”

“It's killing me to see you this way,” Logan tightens the girth and steps around Moon towards me.

“'Cause though the truth may bury this, ship will carry our bodies safe to shore.” I smile as I sing, Logan's hand snaking around my waist.

“There's an old voice in my head that's holding me back,” He breaths.

“Well tell her that I miss our little talks,” I whisper. Then his lips crush to mine and my heart misses several beats. My stomach flutters and I loop my arms around the back of his neck. Too soon, he pulls back, smiling.

“Let's go,” He says and I grin too.

“How was it?” Logan asks as I lead Moon back inside.

“Great,” I beam. I hadn't ridden in years and at first I was petrified. But Moon had been so patient and completely obedient. I'd even jumped.

“Your mums an amazing teacher,” I say, tying Moon up.

“Her father owned this ranch but she was never allowed to ride as he thought it too dangerous. So each night for years she crept out and rode.” Logan smiles sadly at the thought. Together we gently pull off his tack and hang it up again. I lead him outside and leave him grazing in the field. I stand on the fence and gaze out at all of the horses beside Logan.

“Who's that?” I point at a beautiful brown and white paint horse with a long white mane that gently moves in the breeze.

“That,” He smiles.

“Is Spirit.”

“The one that bit the other stable-hand?” I frown at him.

“Yep, that's her. No ones ever been able to ride her properly or even go near her without her biting, kicking or rearing. It's a shame, she's a magnificent jumper.” He says, jumping over the fence.

“What are you doing?” I ask when he stretches his hand out to me.

“Come on, lets go meet her.” He smiles playfully and I take his hand.
