5. Sad eyes

I laid quietly in my bed, pretending to be asleep. I waited until I heard my parents go to bed and the last candle to go out. I waited a few minutes until I heard my pa snoring before I slid out of bed. I grabbed a pair of black shoes that I had found underneath my parents bed. I quickly dressed and crawled down the ladder that led to my small room that was above the kitchen. I stepped off the ladder and peered into my parents bed, making sure that they weren't awake. I tip-toed over to the wooden door, undid that latch and opened the door very slowly.

I quickly shut the door once I was outside. I listened to make sure that no one was awake, but the only living things awake was the cattle. I quickly took off running towards the meadow. Once I got there I quickly pulled out the package that Brad had given me. I slipped the large black clothes over mine and then started walking towards were the Black camp was.

I wasn't entirely sure where the Black camp was, so I figured I would go to the village of Black and pretend I was looking for my 'husband' who had gone to fight in the war. I hoped people would buy it. I walked along the river that connected the Red and Black kingdoms. Black was on one side of the river and Red was on the other.

Around sun-rise was when I finally arrived at the Black village. I found the bridge and crossed and casually walked into the village that was already busy. People ran all around me, the men were carrying wood piles, women sat outside their houses preparing food from the wood that the men had brought them, and the children were helping their parents. I thought back to my parents, they were probably worried about me. They were probably in my little room wondering where I was.

I saw an elderly woman sitting outside her house. She had a fire going but she just sat there staring into the fire. I walked up to her, thinking that she wouldn't be suspicious of me. I bent down so I was at her level.

"Excuse me mam?" I asked as I broke her trance. She jumped a bit and then looked at me. "I was wondering if you could help me. You see, I am looking for my husband who is fighting in the war but I don't know where to look,"

"Oh, terrible, terrible war," the old lady mumbled. "Just lost my husband a month ago," she said. "You be sure to cherish every moment with yours, you hear? Cause it'll be the sweet memories that keep you together," I nodded.

"Yes, that is why I need to find him," I said.

"Soldiers house, near castle," the old lady simply replied as she pointed towards the castle that was only about a mile away.

I thanked her and then started walking quickly towards the castle. It took me about 20 minutes to walk there, and just as the old lady had said there was a large house with a lot of noise coming from it. I walked up to the door and knocked. I could hear men yelling inside but no one came to the door. I rang the rope that was by the door and almost instantly a short bald man opened the door.

"And what would a pretty dame as yourself be doing here?" the man asked as he held his beer bottle and leaned against the door.

"I'm looking for Brad," I said.

"Did Brad finally get himself a girl? Good, maybe he'll finally shut-up about the one that he can't be with," the man said. "He's down at the bar, right as you come into town about five minutes away," the man said as he slammed the door.

I looked towards the village and saw another house with a large hanging sign on the outside that said Bar. I ran towards it and when I got to the door I slowly opened it.

It was already really busy, even for the early hours. I looked around and saw maybe a hundred men, drunk. I started moving though the crowed looking for Brad. I maneuvered though all the drunk men that just stood there. A few men were passed out on the floor and I had to step over them. Then I looked into the far left corner and saw a very familiar face sitting in one of the small booths.

Long brown hair that fell over his eyes. When he brushed his hair away I saw the sad lonely eyes. The same sad eyes that I loved. It was Brad. I had found him.
