12. Complicated Love- Chapter 12

Chapter 12- Water and Heights

When we got there I don’t think it quite settled into my head whom he really was, because I didn’t think “going for a swim” meant we were going swimming in their indoor pool. Harry led me through the many twists and turns of the maze of the mansion and we stopped at a pair of double doors. “You ready?” He asked. I said, “Well if it’s like the rest of your house, no I’m not ready at all.” I said with a little sarcasm and opened the doors. I stopped. The pool was 20 feet deep. It had a low dive and a high dive. There was a hot tub next to it that was the size of two cars. I think the pool was at least 60 feet long. How was I ever going to swim in that? When Hanaa saw us she called me over and gave me my swimsuit. She guided me towards the bathroom and locked the door. There were a few stalls in there so we talked while I changed in one of the stalls. “Claire this is a big pool. Are you sure you want to be in here?” “I know it sounds ridiculous but…I want to try to face my fear because I don’t want Harry to know about it. I don’t want to ruin his plans for today because the day has been going so perfectly. If I’m not fine I give you permission to tell them about my fear. And I know you’ll know when I’m really not okay.” I finished changing quickly and went out into the pool area with Hanaa. Harry and Louis both complimented us. Of course Hanaa made sure we each had our bikinis. They gave us a quick kiss and jumped in. Hanaa jumped in after them but I went around to the stairs. I stepped in cold with fear. Goosebumps had already formed on the surface of my skin and I was just on the edge. Harry was trying his best to be a shark swimming towards me and I stalled a second by laughing at him. He rose up out of the water right at the base of the stairs, grabbed my hand, and said, “Miss you look a little lonely, would you like to have a swim with me?” He said it in the worst American accent I have ever heard and replied, “Yes sir I would.” I glanced at Hanaa who looked just as nervous as I felt. He helped me slip into the pool with ease. It was only 3 feet deep. I can do this. Harry is here and Hanaa is here. I’ll just say I want to stay in the shallow end and it’ll all be fine. Right? We stayed by the side for a while in the shallow end then Niall suggested we swim around and have a jumping contest. Off of the high dive. There goes my alarm again. Hanaa waded over to me and asked, “Do you want me to say something? That board is really high up and you can’t swim. I’ll regret it if something happened to you up there.” I quickly responded, “No. Harry is down here and so are you. I just don’t want to think about it. It’s like jumping off a trampoline but ending in clear icy liquid that can fill your body, suffocate you, and…” I stopped myself with tears in my eyes. Hanaa finished the sentence for me, “Kill you. Claire you don’t have to do this. No one is making you.” I told her I would and we caught up with the boys at the deep end. It was 20 feet. Liam was the first to jump. He jumped straight into the pool like a pencil and almost hit the bottom. I was impressed. Niall went off next, and did a massive belly flop. The wave came over my head and for a minute I couldn’t think and almost panicked. Harry pulled me close to him and hugged me before it was his turn. He got up and I watched the muscles in his arms as he pulled himself up onto the cement around the water. It was stunning how easy it was for him. Once at the top, Harry blew me a kiss and jumped. My instant reaction was to catch him, as if he would break if he hit the water, but I remembered I couldn’t swim and Harry could. He landed safely, making the biggest wave I’ve seen. I smiled when he came up by my said. “Your turn.” He whispered, and then kissed me.
