1. The Victims of Pompeii

THE VICTIMS OF POMPEII

Open on a busy Pompeii. People are hurriedly walking around on the streets, selling things and buying things. Caecilius is at a stall deciding whether to purchase a gold ring. He stand there for a while, contemplating about his decision. The stallholder grows impatient.

STALLHOLDER:

Master?

Caecilius doesn’t answer.

STALLHOLDER:

Master?

CAECILIUS:

What?

STALLHOLDER:

Does anything catch your eye?

CAECILIUS:

No, no.

Caecilius walks home, and the ground tremors quietly; you can see Mount Vesuvius in the distance.

CUT TO CAECILIUS’S VILLA. CAECILIUS WALKS INTO THE VILLA AND ENTERS THE ATRIUM. HE SITS DOWN AND RESTS HIS HEAD.

CAECILIUS:

Metella! Metella!

Metella enters.

CAECILIUS:

Metella where have you been?

METELLA:

I gave my thanks to the household Gods, did you bring back anything from the market?

CAECILIUS:

No, not today.

Qunitus, Metella and Caecilius’s son, enters.

QUINTUS:

Mother!

METELLA:

Quintus? Have you appeased the household God’s today?

QUINTUS:

No not yet.

Another small tremor shocks the room and things teeter and nearly fall.

METELLA:

You have angered the God’s. Now go. Insolent child.

Quintus leaves the room and Evelina (his sister) enters.

EVELINA:

Mother the ground shakes more frequently than ever, Ceres must be angry.

Metella walks over to Evelina and holds her tight.

METELLA:

Do not worry daughter. There will be no tremors tonight, we will live as usual, and your father will meet that rich merchant tomorrow.

CUT TO THE NIGHT. EVELINA IS ASLEEP. THE GROUND BEGINS TO SLIGHTLY SHAKE AND THE STRONG WINDS KNOCK OVER STALLS IN THE STREET. THERE IS SUDDENLY A LOUDER TREMOR AND EVELINA IS SHAKEN AWAKE. SHE GASPS AND LOOKS AROUND WORRIEDLY. AFTER A MINUTE OF TWO EVELINA GETS UP WALKS DOWNSTAIRS. EVELINA OPENS THE DOOR AND WALKS OUTSIDE. SHE IS PUSHED BACK BY THE WIND AND ANOTHER LOUD TREMOR KNOCKS OVER A VASE INSIDE THE VILLA. MOUNT VESUVIUS IS SILENT AS THE WINDS BLOW AND THE TREMORS SHAKE THE GROUND. METELLA LOOKING FOR EVELINA.

METELLA:

Evelina! Eevelina!

Metella runs outside and grabs Evelina in a tight hug.

METELLA:

Evelina you must come inside, the streets are not safe at night.

EVELINA:

Mother, mother the winds, listen.

Metella listens and there is silence for a while.

EVELINA:

This has never happened before mother, I have never heard anything like it.

METELLA:

Evelina, come inside, there is nothing to worry about.

Metella and Evelina walk inside, but Evelina does not believe that everything will be fine.

CUT TO THE NEXT MORNING. EVELINA IS ASLEEP, BUT IN THE BACKGROUND SCREAMS AND SHOUTS CAN BE HEARD FROM THE STREET THE GROUND RUMBLES VIOLENTLY AND EVELINA IS SHAKEN AWAKE. SHE FALLS ONTO THE GROUND, AND IMMEDIATELY STAGGERS UP AND RUNS DOWNSTAIRS WHERE EVERYONE IS SCREAMING AND WEEPING.

QUINTUS:

Mother come on!

METELLA:

Quintus be quiet!

CAECILIUS:

Metella we must leave now! Leave the marble! Leave it just come on!

METELLA:

Wait, where is Evelina?

The ground again rumbles and rocks fire through the ceiling.  Evelina runs downstairs.

METELLA:

Evelina!

Evelina runs straight outside.

METELLA:

Evelina no you mustn’t!

Evelina runs outside followed by Metella and Caecilius.

Evelina screams as stalls around her are on fire, and as Vesuvius sprays fireballs and lava.

METELLA:

Evelina come inside!

CAECILIUS:

We must flee Pompeii!

METELLA:

Mother, father what is it?

CAECILIUS:

I don’t know, the great god Vulcan must be in rage, it’s so Vulcanic, like, some kind of volcano.

Evelina weeps as she see’s the town she loves covered in ash, people run and scream, taking what belongings they can.

A mass of rock and lava flies out of the volcano smashing a building nearby.

METELLA:

Evelina!

Metella screams as the building shatters and Metella drags Evelina inside. Caecilius stays outside and looks over to the stall he was standing at yesterday. The cloth is on fire, and all of the ornaments and expensive rings are sprawled all over the floor. Caecilius runs over, and picks up the ring he was looking at yesterday. It’s very hot and Caecilius immediately drops it and winces. He rips the cloth from his clothes and picks up the ring, and runs back into the house.

BACK IN THE HOUSE, HIS FAMILY ARE PICKING UP POSSESIONS AND RUNNING TO THE DOOR. THEY ARE COVERED IN ASH AND THE HOUSE IS IN RUINS.

METELLA RUNS TO THE DOOR NEXT TO CAECILIUS.

METELLA:

Qunitus! Evelina! We must leave Pompeii!

Evelina runs forward into her mother’s arms, while Qunitus stays behind, grabbing all the belongins he can. Above him, the ceiling comes loose, and begins to wobble.

CAECILIUS:

Qunitus! Do as your mother says get here now!

Caecilius runs forward as the ceiling collapses. Caecilius throws Quintus aside and is covered in debris and hardened mud. Everyone screams in horror.

METELLA:

No!

EVELINA:

Father!

Quintus runs forward to Evelina and Metella, as more of the ceiling collapses behind him. They can hear Caecilius in pain.

CAECILIUS:

Run! Get away from Pompeii! Metella! Run!

METELLA:

Caecilius!

Caecilius groans and stops breathing. Metella grabs her children’s hands and runs out. Evelina struggles.

EVELINA:

Father! Father! No!

OUTSIDE PEOPLE LIE DEAD IN THE STREET NEARLY FULLY COVERED IN ASH, AND A CLOUD OF SMOKE ADVANCES BEHIND THEM.

QUINTUS:

Run!

They all run through the streets as fast as they can. They can see buildings collapse, and stalls and people on fire. Some people cower in corners and close they’re eyes while others scream and frantically run around.

EVELINA:

Mother! Mother!

METELLA:

Run child! Keep running child and do not look back!

METELLA:

But father!

METELLA:

Do not look back!

Despite her mothers warnings Evelina looks back and see’s her town being consumed in smoke and ash. Metella jolts Evelina’s arm and Evelina turns sharply round.

ZOOM OUT OF THE FAMILY AND UP TO POMPEII, WHERE THE SMOKE DESCENDS ON THE SMALL TOWN. EVELINA AS AN OLD WOMAN NARRATES. AS SHE NARRATES, THE IMAGE OF POMPEII FADES INTO A SHEET OF WHITE ASH…

EVELINA (NARRATION):

That night, the whole of Pompeii was killed in smoke, and fire. Along with everyone in the town and Herculaneum too. Me, mother and Quintus fled, leaving our house and father. We ran to the only place we could. The neighbouring town Naples. We stayed there for a night, and then went back to see if there were any survivors from the fire. Lucius Pestrus Dextrus’s family survived, and we found them the next day tunneling through a sheet of white ash to what was once Pompeii. Everyone we ever had or wanted is now buried, hidden from the world. I went back there many times, looking for things, see if anything had surfaced. But the mountain will always be know…

CUT TO OLD EVELINA STANDING AT THE WHITE SHEET OF POMPEII SHE LOOKS UP TO THE CAMERA.

EVELINA:

…As the destruction of Pompeii. But I knew.

QUEUE ENDING THEME AND TITLES.

WRITTEN BY HARPAL KHAMBAY.

CUT TO THE YEAR 1594. TH ITALIAN ARCHITECT FONTANA WALKS ON THE SOIL.

FONTANA:

E il mio sistema idrico volontà... che cosa è questo?

HE COMES ACROSS A SHORT STUMP OF STONE. HE NOTICES AND KNEELS DOWN. HE SEE’S MARKS ON THE STONE AND BRUSHES THE DIRT AND SOIL AWAY FROM IT. THERE IS AN INSCRIPTION.

FONTANA:

An… inscription?

EVELINA (Narration):

That Pompeii would be found. One day.
