12. Chapter 11 - Recruited

The car pulled up outside Thames House, the London MI5 headquarters, as dusk was falling, darkening the streets of London.
"What do we do? Do we just go straight in?" Cameron looked at the huge, intimidating building covered with security cameras.
"I don't think they'd let us." Rosie pointed to the two men standing outside the door, the bulges underneath their jackets where their pistols were kept obvious and their eyes hidden by black reflective sunglasses, despite the fact that night was falling.
"I could make them let us." Lucy suggested, but Nat shook his head.
"You'd need to make the whole building constantly believe that they know us. We need to do this for real."
The group hesitantly followed Nat as he walked through the gates and up to the doors.
"Yes?" The guards looked down at the group.
"We'd like to talk to the head of MI5." Nat announced boldly.
The guards laughed.
"I'm sorry, but he's not going to be interested in a bunch of kids in scuba gear." Sneered one of them.
"I think he will." Lucy replied indignantly, putting her hand to her head. Jenny put her hand on Lucy's shoulder, shaking her head slightly.
"He's not going to come out here just because you've got a headache. Now get out of here before we have to make you."
The group didn't move.
"Right. Get out of here." The guards moved towards the teenagers, one of them grabbing Lucy and Jenny by the arms, and the other clamped his hand on Nat's shoulder.
"Get off!" Shouted Lucy, but the guard didn't let up.
"Trust me, the head of MI5 will want to see us!" JJ cried, following after his friends.
"And why would that be?"
Nat turned to stone, and the guard pushing him stopped, his mouth wide open in shock.
"Because we're special." Nat said.
The guard stuttered. "I'll... see what I can do."

The 6 teenagers, one in tattered ordinary clothing and the rest in matching black jumpsuits, stood in front of the desk of the head of MI5. At the other side of the desk, in a leather chair, sat the head of MI5 himself. He was dressed in a smart suit with his black hair cut short, and his glasses perched on the end of his nose. Everything about the man was smart, business-like, and indistinguishable from any other businessman in London.
"So what exactly made the two men on the door let you six children in?" He enquired skeptically.
"We're superheroes."
The head of MI5 coughed. "That is impossible, and you know it as well as I. Why are you here, and what did you say to the guards to get them to bring you in?"
"Look down." Cameron said.
The head of MI5 looked down, and saw that everything in the room - the desk, the 6 teenagers, the bookshelf, even the chair that he was sitting on - was floating in midair.
"Impossible?" JJ raised an eyebrow, and then sped up and stole the glasses off the head of MI5's nose before he could even blink.
"You are impossible!" The man breathed.
"That's us. Impossible." declared Jenny.
The head of MI5 took a deep breath and straightened his tie. "I am M, head of MI5. What can I do for you?"
"We want to work for you." Answered Nat. M raised his eyebrows in surprise, but nodded nonetheless.
“I’m sure we can come to some sort of agreement.”

The lift dinged and the doors slid open to reveal the top floor of Thames House. The furniture had all been pushed to one side, leaving a large space in the middle in which 6 camp beds had been erected.
“I apologize for the less-than-adequate accommodation arrangements. Unfortunately we didn’t have much time to find you somewhere to stay, so for now this will have to do.”
Nat shrugged. “It’s fine. Better than what I had before.”
M tilted his head, and pulled Nat aside. Nat waved the others in, and then started talking.
Instead of grabbing a bed, Lucy walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, and stared out of it at the night skyline of London.
In the blink of an eye, JJ appeared next to her.
“Hey.”
“Hey.” Lucy didn’t turn her head as she replied.
“What’cha thinking?” asked JJ.
“If I focus, I can hear them.”
“Who?”
Lucy sighed. “Everyone. Everyone in the city.”
“Everyone?”
“Yup.” “Then what am I thinking?”
Lucy concentrated for a moment.
Lucy, you smell really bad.
“I smell?”
JJ laughed. “That’s pretty cool.”
“Not when you can hear the thoughts of over 50 million people all at once.”
“How do you control it?”
“With extreme difficultly.”
There was a moment of silence as they both stared out of the window.
“So tell me about yourself.” JJ said, leaning against one of the metal columns that supported the window.
Lucy laughed. “No way.”
“Come on, don’t be boring. None of us know anything about anyone else here!”
“So why start with me?”
JJ shrugged. “Why not?”
“JJ, go away and stop annoying me.”
“Make me.”
Lucy raised her hand towards her head, but before she could use her ability, JJ gave in.
“Fine. Ok. Whatever.”

Jenny looked over at Nat as he walked back in.
“What was that about?”
“Oh, he wanted to know why we came. I gave him the shortened version.”
Jenny looked at Nat quizzically.
“We ran away from an evil corporation that wants to use us to take over the world and we decided to come work for you and be superheroes instead.” Nat chuckled.
“Do you reckon they’ll find us?” asked Jenny.
Nat shrugged. “Probably. But we’ll be ready for them. And besides, we’re with MI5. What’s the worst that could happen?”

Lucy looked longingly at the pair in the corner, Cameron and Rosie, laughing at each other without a care in the world.
As she wandered over, Cameron looked up at her and smiled.
“Hey Lucy.”
“Hey.”
“You ok?” “I’m tired.”
“Me too.”
“Can you only believe it’s been a day since we broke out?”
Rosie smiled. “ Yeah. Cam was just telling me about that. Did you really stop the guards seeing you?”
Lucy nodded.
“That’s so cool!”
Lucy shrugged nonchalantly.
“I guess.”
“Hey, everyone, bed time!” Nat called.
“Aw come on Nat, it’s only 7pm!” Lucy whined.
“Well we’ve been up since two in the morning and running from guys who want to kill us, and I doubt I’m the only one injured from the fight at the café, so we need our sleep. Now get into bed. Don’t make me make you.”
“I could make you run around thinking you’re a chicken.” Argued Lucy.
“Do it then.” Nat smirked, turning to stone.
Lucy tried, but no matter how hard she focused, she couldn’t find Nat’s mind. It was like his mind was just missing.
“I can’t.”
Cameron, Rosie and Jenny laughed.
“I thought so. You couldn’t hear my thoughts when I was a statue at the base, so I think I must be immune.”
“Lucky.” Muttered Rosie.
“Anyway, get to bed. No doubt MI5 will have some job or other for us to do tomorrow.”
“Who made you boss?”
“Well if you want to take responsibility for 5 other teenagers with errant superpowers Cameron, feel free.”
Cameron stood in silence.
“I thought so. Now everyone get to bed. Seriously, we’re not going to be able to save the world if we can’t keep our eyes open.”
Jenny and JJ chuckled, getting into bed along with everyone else.
Cameron flicked the light switch off with a wave of his hand.
“Thanks Cameron. Night everyone.” Nat said, but no-one replied. They were already fast asleep.
