3. Forced to Relocate(1940- October 1941)

The next morning, a person from the War Children's office found Millie, Emalie and I wandering around the streets. We pretend not to be orphans. We pretend to have a home, and a family. We pretend that Millie actually got presents on her birthday last week, instead of some drawings Em and I had made.

"What are you doing?" she asked us.

"Walking around waiting for lunch." I quickly lied.

"Three young ladies shouldn't be walking around by themselves." she told us.

"We know." the three of us chimed together. The Lady sized us up and down, as if to see if we were useful tools or whatnot.

"Come with me." she motioned to the back of the car that she was in. It was a long car ride to wherever we were headed towards. The Lady told us that we were headed to an Child Relocation Centre. It was "to help the children being threathened by the war." as the Lady so generously put it.

As soon as we got there, we realised how packed it was. I mean, downtown London can be jam packed. I've seen it. This was just as packed! The Lady led us past the crowds and into another room. That was the last time I saw Millicent and Emalie and I all in the same room, together. I was silent for the entire process. Honestly, what is there to tell you? Immediately, I was sent to the first house. After a couple of days, they sent me back. APPARENTLY they had "NO USE FOR A GIRL!" Oh how I was in an uproar after that!

"Too Unlady-like!" the next household responded after seven hours.

"Un-Coordinated!" The third household cried in protest after three days.

"We thought we applied for a BOY, not YOU!" said another household as soon as I arrived.

"Reads too much!" replied the fifth household in disgust after a week. Slowly I was getting better at staying at a house that would generously accept me, just finding the right one to stay at was the problem.

"A bad influence on our children!" the sixth household outbursted in an uproar of anger after about two weeks. Really, I wasn't THAT bad. Was I?

"Too weak!" the seventh household said as they turned me away after the first five hours.

"Contradicts too much." the eight household told the CRC as I was sent back. Ha! I had lasted almost a MONTH there! Victory is mine!

"Anybody, but you." The ninth house told me after the first day. They really ticked me off, and it was a house full of boys.

"You know what?!?!?" I asked raising my voice. "At least I have the DECENCY to be polite! Unlike Edgar over there, who's constantly picking his nose, or Damien, who won't lift a stupid finger! And when he does, it's to tell people off when he's pissed!! You are all horrid mutated beasts!" And with that I stormed out of their house and straight to the train station, where I was met by someone from the CRC. I also found out that I use the word "decency" too much.

When I got back to London, the Lady who had brought my friends and I to the centre in the first place talked to me and told me:

"We have found one more spot to put you. Please, Molly, for the sake of the Relocation Centre, please BEHAVE! Learn from your mistakes and understand that you have to grow up and be proper!" the Lady scolded me.

What if I DON'T want to grow up and be proper!?  I thought to myself.

"As I was saying, this spot you may like," the Lady started.

"For a change..." I muttered quietly under my breath.

"This person is a Professor and he has agreed to take you in. Mind you that there are already four other children there. If anybody needs to be relocated because of any sort, it WILL be you. Since you were brought last to the house, you will be the first to leave. Only fair, isn't it?"

NO!!!!!!! I thought again to myself. Was this Lady crazy, stupid, or God knows what else?!?!?!?!?!?!?

"Do you understand?" she asked me. I nodded. "Good. You leave immediately."
