9. Chapter 9

Harry's POV
When I got home that day, I was in a foul mood. My sister tried to banter with me like usual, but I shrugged her off. I didn't feel like talking. The weird thing was that when my sister asked me what was wrong, I couldn't give her an honest answer. I truly didn't know.

The only thing I knew for sure is that Niall Horan is on my bad list. He seemed sketchy. I don't like the way he looks at Sophie; I don't like the way Sophie looks at him.

Alright, so maybe, maybe the problem is that I'm jealous. But only because Sophie's my friend, and I don't want him to be the cause of why she stops talking to me. Some boyfriends are like that; really possessive and all. If you're dating them, you can't talk to any other guys. Niall didn't really give off the vibe, but I was being cautious. Just looking out for my frenemys.

I rolled my eyes at myself. "I might as well just own up..." I muttered to myself. That whole entire day in the studios, Sophie had spoken of Niall. I couldn't help but feeling that it was to make me jealous on purpose. So, maybe it was working. A little.

"So, that Niall kid. He seems cool," Gemma mentioned randomly. I narrowed my eyes at her and she raised her hands defensively. "Don't get your knickers in a twist!" I rolled my eyes. . "You don't like him."

Even though it wasn't a question, I nodded. "Yeah."

"It's because of Sophie." My head snapped up to my oh-so-perceptive sister. "What? I understand a lot more than you think I am a girl..."

I rolled my eyes and changed the channel on the TV, turning it up to prohibit any conversation. Gemma sighed dramatically and left the living room. I closed my eyes and pinched the bridge of my nose. This day has been exceptionally horrible.

When I saw Sophie there, looking genuinely happy, it broke my heart. All the same, I was content just seeing her happy. I sighed dejectedly. There's no way I could compare with Niall, who plays  instruments, has that natural look that girls faint over.

I looked back on my memory, I know that Niall and Sophie are a cute couple. I'd much rather her not date him, but I found myself being okay with it. "As long as she's happy," I said, sighing again. I picked up my phone and shouted Gemma.

"What?" She yelled, sounding annoyed.

"Come here, where going out," I said . I heard her chuckle as she ran upstairs. A few moments later, she flopped down on the couch by my feet.

"Where we going?" She asked excitedly. I rolled my eyes.

"Let's go to the bakery. I don't want to be home," I said, wanting to take my mind off Sophie. "I need to take my apron and pay for my cupcake."

"'Kay!" Gemma said, jogging to the room to change her clothes. I wondered why, but I shrugged it off. SHe's just being Gemma. I put my phone in my pocket and walked leisurely into the kitchen, snatching the change. I didn't know when mum was getting back, so I scribbled down a note telling her we went to the bakery. I wasn't going to put a time on there, just in case we decided to chill out in town.

"Gemma!" I called. SHe slid on her socks, landing perfectly in front of the door to put on her shoes. I rolled my eyes. "Lucky."

sHe barked out laughter. "Bro, you got it wrong. I'm skilled." I shoved her into the wall and she fell to the floor ungracefully.

"Yeah, that's some serious skill you got there," I said sarcastically. SHe glared at me before letting his shoulders sag in defeat and pulling on her other shoe.

She shoved me and I chuckled before blasting music threw her phone stopping at 'Tear drops on my guitar ' by Taylor swift. "Hey, I know  this," I commented. "We used to jam out to this."

Gemma laughed. "Oh, dear brother, your dance moves haven't improved in the slightest," She said as she started singing along. I rolled my eyes but started singing like an idiot with her before it hit me.

There are parts of this song that remind me way too much of my life.

I spazzed out and pretty much punched the phone in an attempt to turn it off. "What?" Gemma asked. I shook my head without a reply as we walked up to the Bakery. There was no variety at this place, but the prices were reasonable , but this is the only bakery in town, so they typically do what they want. I love it there though I even work there on Saturdays.

"Gems, I have a twenty. How much do you have?" I asked her.

SHe shrugged, fishing in his pockets. "I have three hair clips, gum, an lipgloss and a total of ten quid and ," She announced. I nodded in approval.

"We'll have enough to buy some good food," I said happily.

"Good food... as in coffee and cake?" Gemma asked, her voice hitching in excitement.

I rolled my eyes. "No bananas," I said sarcastically. Her face noticeably fell and I just stared at her. "Gemma, are you kidding me? That was sarcastic." Her eyes were trained straight ahead as she stopped in her tracks. I sighed. "I'm sorry for joking about food with you, okay?" I waved my hand in front of her face after not receiving a reply. I picked up something off the floor and threw it at him. He didn't even flinch. "Sis, what the hell are you...?"

I followed his line of vision and couldn't think for a second. There was a seriously fit lad in front off us and I'm totally straight up ahead of us, and it wasn't me or Niall or Liam or any of the other good looking lads. This was a new hot lad. He looked older than me though. I was about to walk up to him when Gemma started running for her, yelling, "DJ Malik!"

I followed her tentatively. How did she know him? "Gems!" He said excitedly. "Oh my gosh its so good to see a familiar face, you have no clue!"

"What are you doing here?" Gemma questioned, holding her at arms length.

"I moved in with my cousins. Who's you're boyfriend?" Zayn asked, his eyes losing the twinkle.

I smiled at him and held out her hand. "Harry styles. I'm her younger and better looking brother," I announced cheekily.

Zayn nodded looking amused. "

"Well, I leave you two to catch up. Gemma, you'll explain to me later how you know him," she nodded frantically, obviously just wanting me to go away. Jeez. Point take. I turned around and narrowly avoided running into someone, about the same height as me. "Shit, sorry," I muttered.

"It's cool," the guy said. I looked up. His accent hinted at Irish roots. Damn. Not Horan.

"Irish idiot," I mumbled.
"I'm sorry?" Niall asked, not hearing.

"What for?" I asked.

He looked at me confused before smiling. "Oh, I get it. You're Sophie's friend, right?" Niall asked. As I hung up my apron I shrugged. "You guys are just friends... right?"

I narrowed my eyes. "What makes you think otherwise?"

"I'm not really sure. I was just wondering, I mean, if you aren't going to go for her, would it be breaking the bro code if I did?" Niall asked, smiling good-naturedly.

I was pretty sure that he could cuss me out and it would still sound nice. He just had one of those voices. I groaned inwardly.. I bit my tongue and let the words I'd regret forever spill out. "Not at all, man. I'm just her friend." I sighed lightly. "But be forewarned, I may not be over buff, but I will murder you with your own guitar if you break her heart. Got it?" Niall nodded, understanding. "Well, good. See you on the flip side."

I left him alone and but my owed money in the cashier and left a note. I saw Gemma giving Zayn a hug as I was making my way to car. He turned away and waved one last time before making his way to his Mum? Gemma came up to me her face was obviously brighter. "Go ahead and commence the explaining," I ordered.

"Well, I met him  on the school class trip we went to a year ago. You know, the one where we went to that museum in Jacksonville? Florida? Man, we had a cool teacher. They let us skip like a full week of school to walk around and not listen to the tour guides at museums. Anyways, he was there, too, with his school. He was on holiday, with his family and friends. He's good mates with  that Horam kid that you hate because you're in love with – " I smacked my hand over her mouth, sending a desperate look her way and gesturing to all the people around us. Everybody talks, and if they heard that... I'd never live that down. Gemma seemed to understand and she picked up his story again. "Anyways, when we met, we just... I don't know, we just became friends. We even met at this coffee shop one night, when I snuck out the window. I thought I'd never see him again," Gemma said happily.

I clapped her on the back. "That's really great, Gemma," I said earnestly. Then I rolled my eyes inwardly. What happened to sarcastic Harry? Heartfelt Harry is freaking me out.

"Thanks, Haz," Gemma told me as we paid and gathered up our bags. She grinned when he noticed that I grabbed our cupcakes.  I carried them up to the path and we ate on the way home. SHe threw a Cake at me then almost cried when it got dirty. I laughed as she cradled it to her chest, petting it's iced surface. "My baby!" She yelled dramatically.

I looked at her then burst into a fit of laughter. Her pout was just too dramatic. I was still lightly chuckling when we arrived  at  the driveway. "Mum's home!" I shouted. Gemma whooped as we hurried, to the door. "Mum, we're home!" I called.

"Kids!" Mum said happily, kissing us both on the cheek after she set down the groceries. "Thanks for leaving a note," she told us, going through her shopping bags. We nodded. "There're some slightly edible cookies over there." I chuckled and picked up two or three of the scorched cookies, simply to make her feel better.

"Homework, gotta go," Gemma and I said in unison. We stared at each other, amazing.

"That was weird," I said. Gemma nodded in agreement, staring at me like I'd grown a second head. We paused, forgetting what we were going to do.

"Homework," mum, prompted.

"Oh, yeah!" I said resuming my pace to my room. Instead, I fell onto my bed and took a much needed nap.

Sophie's POV

As I finished my last math problem, my phone buzzed. I wondered who was texting me, so I crawled across my bed and scooped up my phone, smiling as Niall's name appeared, showing that I had a text from him. Butterflies fluttered in my stomach and I pondered that for a moment before opening the text.

Just got off work and I was thinking of you. Coffee in ten? Xx – Nialler

I smiled and bounced on my bed like an excited little kid. The way that he wrote 'xx' at the end of it was just adorable! Niall was seriously the sweetest thing. After spending a lot of the day with him, I found that he was really easy to hang out with. We had easy going banter that we kept up, and I noticed that he has subtle confidence. It's not that he's cocky, it's more like he's really content with who he is. And maybe it's just me, but that's pretty attractive to me See ya then! – Sophie

I threw my phone in my pocket and pulled on a jacket, since it was sort of cold. I braided my hair messily and jogged into the living room, kissing my Dave's  cheek. "Hey, Dave. I'm going to meet a friend. I'll be back soon, okay?" I asked.

He nodded distractedly, absorbed in his book. "Mhm," he muttered. I smiled at his nerdiness and walked out quickly, not wanting to make Niall wait. I hopped in my truck, my smile not faultering the slightest bit as I drove to the coffee shop. A song came on, and as I was getting lost in the words, I realized that the smile on my face was no longer for Niall, but for Harry. This song reminded me of him. The smile fell from my face and I pulled into the small parking lot. I shut off my car simply sitting there.

I made a mental list.

Niall: charming, sweet, gorgeous, non-insulting, obviously interested, singer, plays guitar. I pondered about his hair, deciding that it was nice but  wasn't as great as Harry's'. Moderate Harry.

Harry: arrogant, jerk, insulting, gorgeous, possibly interested, good with music, might be a  singer, no instruments, and DIMPLES.

I considered it for a few more seconds. "Well, Harry didn't invite me out for coffee, much less text me," I grumbled, stepping out of my car and heading inside.

As soon as I stepped in the door, I wanted to faint on the spot. Niall was lounging casually in a chair, phone in hand. He was wearing a simple red polo and normal chino jeans, but dang, he looked amazing. Niall noticed me, still stunned at his utter perfection, and waved me over. I walked over to him a bit mechanically, having to work to keep my jaw up.

"Hey," he said softly.

"Hi!" I said happily, regaining my composure.

"So, I'm not stupid." I raised an eyebrow. Ohhhhkayyy...

"Um, what?" I said brilliantly.

"I know you were hanging out with me to gauge Harry's' reaction. I totally don't mind that. You're good company," Niall said with a laugh.

I shrugged. "Hey, you caught me. Honestly though, that's how it started, but it's different now," I said.

"How so?" Niall asked, leaning forward in his chair. I smiled and leaned forward as well, my gaze not faultering.

"Because I actually like you for who you are now, not as the guy I'm more or less using to make a jerk jealous," I said. He smiled for a brief moment before looking down. "What?"

"I'm just not sure if it's the right thing to do. I mean, he really cares about you," Niall said softly.

I leaned back in my seat as a waitress came and took our order. After that, I leaned back forward. "What the heck do you mean? How do you know?" I asked.

Niall smirked a little. "Well, I decided I wanted to genuinely know. So, I got it out of him when he came to the bakery today. Don't fret, love, it was in a very casual way. He won't think that you put me up to it or something." I nodded gratefully. "Anyways, we were talking, and I asked him if it would be against the bro code to date you. He told me it was fine, but gave me a pretty decent threat afterwards if I, and I quote, 'break your heart'."

I laughed a little. "God, what was the threat?"

"Something along the lines of murdering with my own guitar," Niall said, chuckling. "Look, Katie, I like you. I mean, you're great. But honestly, if you want to use me to make him jealous, I really don't care." He sounded really genuine, and it made my heart melt.

"Why are you so okay with it?" I blurted. "Most guys would be mad."

"I'm not most guys. Plus, I'm all for a sappy love story." He leaned forward as if to tell me a secret. "You will speak of it to no one, but I watch Lifetime movies with my mum and my cousin all the time. And I enjoy them."

I laughed at him and nodded my head. "I meant what I said though," I told him, becoming serious. "I do like you. I'm just not sure what to do about the Harry issue."

"Want a guy's opinion? Hell, I'll help you plan this crap. This is the most excitement I've had in days," Niall said blankly. I smiled and nodded. "Well, here you go: as a guy, I'd be totally pissed off that the girl I have an undeniable crush on is suddenly hanging out with the new, sexy Irish guy," he started, adding on a wink. I giggled and his eyes twinkled.

"Honestly though, if there was a new guy, and he started hanging out with my girl, I'd back off. That's me. I don't know very much about his personality, but from what he told me today, he's backed off. I'd suggest that we act like we're really close, you know? Best friends. Then, whenever you decide on what to do with him, then you can either play up the, 'I think I like my best friend' thing, or you can use the 'hey, we're best friends, not dating so I can totally have you!'. Either way, it depends on your decision. And your decision doesn't bother me." Niall ended with a nod.

"You really thought this through," I commented.

"What else am I supposed to do while stocking the shelves?" Niall questioned with raised eyebrows. I laughed and drank my coffee.

"So, we're besties," I stated.

"Yes. And we're affectionate, but only just enough to make him uncomfortable. I won't make you sit on my lap or anything," Niall said. I blushed at the thought of that and cleared my throat awkwardly. "Hey, I'm sorry," he said, earnestly. He looked really concerned.

"No! It's not your fault I blushed," I told him with a shaky laugh. "When does Operation: Find Out What The Heck Sophie Feeling commence?"

A smile played at Nialls lips. "ASAP," he answered, looking at me calculatingly. "Can you handle this? Think we can pull this off?"

I raised my eyebrows. "You should be worrying about yourself, Horan." He smirked at me and leaned back in his chair.

"I'm amazed by the fact that you're so obvious about how much you like Harry, but it's like he's oblivious. I mean, if I had a pretty girl like you sending me those obvious signs, the Great Nialler would not be wasting time!" Niall said.

I raised my eyebrows again. "You know, I thought you weren't cocky..."

"I'm not. Until I get comfortable around you. Then I'm mildly arrogant," Niall winked at me, making me chuckle and blush, all at the same time. "Man, this will look legit if you keep blushing like that."

I threw several sugar packets at him. "Niall!" I protested. "Shut. Up." He rolled his eyes and smiled.

"Whatever, fie. You liked it." I shook my head, still smiling and looked out the window. I noticed an old couple walking together down the street. "That's adorable," Niall muttered, following my line of vision.

I grinned. "Yeah. That'd be awesome to grow old with someone like that." I got lost in thought for a few moments as Niall nodded in agreement. We sat in a comfortable silence till Niall finally stood.

"Mum wants me home," Niall said with a shrug. He touched my cheek softly. "See you later, love," he said in a Irish accent. I smiled and nodded, watching him leave. I gulped down my lukewarm coffee and walked back to my truck, wondering if the warm feeling was from the coffee or from the boy I found myself recently entranced with.
I frowned at the windshield. If you'd have asked me two days ago, I would have said Harry without hesitation. I mean, he's the one I've been so worried about, so consumed with. But after two days with Niall, I feel happier than ever. I can't tell if the affection for Niall was brotherly, or if I actually liked him.

I was assuming it was the latter, but it's not like I can't trust my judgment any longer.
