11. Chapter Ten

The knob rattled and then a fist slammed against the door. I can here the two men bicker though the door.

“Locked.” Snarls a man, “he must be in here.”

“I’ll go get the key.” Replies the other.

“I’ll come with you.” Says the other.

I wait for a moment, wondering how the guards could be so stupid. Once their footsteps fade, Lance gets on his knees. “Wow, that was easier than I thought.” He says as he raises an eyebrow.

            “Yeah.” I agree.

He pushes past me, we shuffle awkwardly in the tight space. “Okay, follow my lead.”

Out of all the people, I’m glad he’s here. The scientist enhanced his ability to sneak around… he’s probably nearly invisible now.

“Wait.” I grab his wrist, “We need a plan, and I can’t stay here. Griffin is dying.”

“What?” Lance nearly yells. I forgot to tell him in the midst of all the panic.

            “In the restaurant—“

“The restaurant? You guys go on a raid… in a restaurant? What is that? Like, some kind of date?”

“Shut up will you.” I sigh angrily, “anyways, the scientist who enhance our abilities…” He began to interrupt again, but I silenced him. “Was there and he has created more of people like us, just without minds. Basically mind control.”

“Yeah I ran into a few of those. Red glowing eyes, right?”

I nod and continue, “Well, they caught us, and the mindless people—“

“Lets call them Drones.” Lance chimed in, but I didn’t mind.

“Okay, the Drones attacked… and so did we, and then a bunch of them came out of nowhere. I suspect they were already there I just didn’t notice. A long story short, Griffin was shot six times in vital areas that need treatment right away.” The words poor out of my mouth, and then I realize how warm my eyes have gotten.

“Hey, its okay.” Lance says as he pulls me in. I burry my head into his shoulders, and tremble. The warmth of his body sends tingles crawling all over my skin. “You go, and ill get Jesse. It’s just that simple.” He says while stroking my hair.

“But what if something bad happens?”

“That’s the risk we’ll have to take. I’m sure I can make it, I mean, they enhanced my ability to sneak around.” He smiles lightly, “stay clear of the Drones.”

At that, he slowly pushes the door open, and peers around the corners. He waves his hand, signaling me to go.

I slip past him and head down the hall. How will I get out? And what if he doesn’t get out? What if he is taken captive? And what if Griffin dies?

I had to stop the “what if” questions, so I bolt down the hallway, and head for the nearest exit. I’m defiantly not stealthy like Lance, but I am fast.

I approach a guard who readies his gun at my approach. Swiftly, I ram him into the wall, pry the gun out of his hands, and slam his head against the wall.

The door is sealed, and the only way it can be opened is by a specific hand. I yank his limp hand up, press it against the scanner, and then sigh with relief as the door slides open.

I continue to wind down the endless halls in search for something. I guess a window will be fine.
