5. Popcorn

"Thank you for coming with me today! I can't believe I actually saw them so close!" Tali repeated as we stopped outside my house, embracing each other in a tight hug.
"It's okay," I laughed, "I'm glad you had fun."
"Aaah! It was Amazayn! Please stay round mine tonight? Mum's working the night shift and my Dad's still in America so I'll be all alone." Tali put on her 'puppy eyes'.
"Not the puppy eyes!" I cried, "I'll try and get out, if my dad doesn't let me, I'll climb out the window or something."
I knew full well my dad wasn't going to allow me to step one foot out of the house, let alone stay at Tali's.
"Text me soon though, okay?"
"Don't worry, I'll text you as soon as I know what I'm going to do."
"See you later then." Tali smiled as she began to walk down the street, making her way to her own house. As she dissapeared into the distance, I turned to face the small building in front of me, dreading what was awaiting me on the other side of the white painted door.
I slowly made my way up the concrete path whilst pulling out my keys, eventually reaching the door. Swinging the door open as quietly as I could, I tried desperately to avoid being heard, my attempt proving unsuccessful.
"Where the bloody hell have you been?!" My dad slurred, stumbling round the corner from the kitchen.
"I was out with Tali." I replied, barely audible.
"When the hell did I say you could go out!"
"You were asleep. I didn't want to wake you." I stammered, my body now trembling.
Without warning he lunged forward towards me, grabbing a fistful of my hair and bringing his face close to mine, his alcohol saturated breath filling my nostrils.
"I don't give a shit if I'm asleep, you don't stray outside this house unless I say so. You understand?" He growled, yanking on my hair again.
I nodded as I felt my eyes beginning to well up, the roots of my hair stinging from the constant force being placed on them.
"I don't know why anyone wants to see you anyway, to bloody fat and annoying for anyone to like you." My dad muttered as he turned away from me and began to trip his way into the living room. "And before you do anything, get me another 6-pack. Stella." He continued, hiccupping halfway through his sentence.
I dumped my bag on the stairs and slowly made my way into the kitchen, stopping at the fridge and gently touching the sore spot on the back of my head before pulling the door open and searching for the cans of beer.
I walked back into the living room where my dad was sprawled across the sofa staring at the TV, a glass bottle in one hand, the other resting behind his head. Cautiously, I set the beers down next to him, keeping my eyes away from him as much as possible, before taking a seat in the tattered armchair in the corner of the room.
After sitting in silence over an hour, my knees pulled up to my chest, absent-mindedly watching the figures move across the TV screen and ignoring the voices being projected from it, I pulled my phone from my pocket and realised I had a message from Tali.

'You coming over? x'

Oh crap, I forgot about that. I snuck a quick glance up at my father who was now sleeping heavily, loud snores coming from his open mouth. It looked like I was sneaking out tonight.

'I'll be over in 20 :) x'

My fingers moved smoothly across the glass screen, immediately pressing send once the text was finished. I crept across the living room floor and made my way up the stairs as quietly as possible, avoiding any opportunities to make a sound. Not wanting to waste time, I changed into the top I had bought earlier shoved anything I would need into a bag and tiptoed back downstairs, grabbing my hoodie as I slipped out though the front door.
Breathing in the cool air as I walked down the path, I eventually turned right and began the 15 minute walk to Tali's house.

Immediately after knocking gently on the large oak door facing me, I heard quick footsteps making their way closer and closer to where I was standing, eventually ceasing, followed by the door in front of me swinging open and my entirety being smothered in a bone crushing hug.
"You made it!"
"As if I wouldn't," I laughed, "I couldn't leave my best friend all alone in the dark." I mocked, putting on a childs voice.
"Aah you love me too much to leave me alone." She replied as we walked down the hallway leading to her kitchen.
"Did you plan anything specific to do, or are you just going to wing it?" I asked, setting my bag down on the table.
"I thought we could have some kind of movie marathon?"
"Okay." I shrugged.
"Don't get too exited then." Tali commented, a slight sarcastic tone showing through her voice, although you could tell she didn't mean it in a bad way.
"Have you picked out any movies in particular?"
"Nah, I though we could just choose as we went along." She suggested. "Woukd you be able to look for the popcorn?"
"Sure." I replied as I began to rummage through the contents of Tali's cupboards.
After a while of searching for the nonexistent popcorn bag, I turned back to Tali. "There's no popcorn anyhwere."
"Oh I forgot, mum had the last bag. I'll go down to the newsagents in a minute and see if they have any."
"Its fine, I'll go. You find the coke and stuff and I'll be back in a second."
"Are you sure?"
"Its fine, I won't be long." I replied, already making my way back to the front door.
"Ooh, get some Ben and Jerry's too!" Tali called as I stepped outside into the dark night, shutting the door behind me before walking in the direction of the glowing shop in the distance.

As I walked through the shop door, I heard the faint bell chime ring somewhere at the back of the store, signalling a new customer. Not wanting to hang around for too long, I made my way over to the large freezer and pulled put two pots of 'chocolate fudge brownie' flavour Ben and Jerry's, immediately sliding the glass door back across and beginning the search for the popcorn. Finding the bags of popcorn proved to be harder than I thought, although I eventually found the assorted flavours hidden next to all the crisps and peanuts.
I stood and deliberated carefully over which flavour to buy; toffee, sweet or salted, before finally deciding to buy all three and hoping Tali liked them all. I extended my arm out and grabbed the first two bags, placing them underneath the pots of ice cream in my free arm, then beginning to reach out for the third bag, but the split second the though process crossed my mind, I heard a familiar low voice behind me.
"Why did you hide?"
