I'm...different. Most people are out to kill me.
And not in the classic cat-fight way.
Like, with a knife, or gun.

Jake is my only friend.

I trust no one.

This is what the mark (#) has given me.

The group of people I belong to are hunted, killed for things we do not know. Just because you possess special powers doesn't mean you are evil, right?

I sure as heck hope not.

This is what I am.

I, Fire Rose, am an Allure.

6. Chapter Six

I just stare at him. His face is dead serious. This boy is delusional. I reach out to Jake.

He thinks I'm his girlfriend!

He what?!

He's crazy!

What do I do?!

Kill him, put him out of his misery.

I can't!

Why not? He's not doing us any favors, we don't owe him anything.

I just. . . something is telling me not to.

That would be him.

No, it's different.

"Are you going to kill me or not?" I look back into his eyes.

"No." I put the gun back in my waistband.

"You sure Angel?"

"Don't call me that." He shrugs and walks to Jake, who is holding up his own gun.

"I believe our girlfriend said not to kill me homeboy." Jake glares at him and he smiles evily.

"He's not my damn boyfriend! For the last time! And neither are you!"

"Thank you!" Exclaims Jake, throwing his hands up in the air. Zak shakes his head.

"That's what I thought."

"What's that supposed to mean?" I snap at Zak.  He just looks at me. Jake's gun is still pointed at the back of his head.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend you Angel." His deep voice takes on a soft side, melting my heart and bringing heat to my cheeks.  I look down at the floor. I don't blush. This isn't like me.

"Explain yourself."

"It's kind of a long story." He says, picking up a water bottle from underneath a bush.  I watch him guzzle it down.

"We have time." He puts the cap back on it and puts it in his bag near the edge of a tree.

"Well I don't. And I really don't want to take a walk through the past."

"Well you're going to have to if you want to walk through the future." Jake says.  I grin.

"It's compilcated."

"I'll figure it out."

"I have somewhere to be."

"In the middle of a forest? I don't think so." He sighs.

"Listen Angel. As much as I want to tell you, as much as I want you to remember me, you can't. It won't work." He looks down at the ground, playing with his knife.

"Try." I whisper. He looks up and meets my eyes.

"I wish I could." He says back. For that instant, his eyes flash bright again.

A glimpse of the gun from my dad, laying on a poker table, and a gasp of the people surrounding me. Shocked I would lay it down.

"How do you do that?"

"Do what?"

"Show pictures to me, in my mind. Through your eyes." He sighs.

"I can't tell you that."

"Then tell me how I'm your girlfriend and why I don't remember." He shakes his head.

"I can't do that either."

"Then tell me about the gun." He smiles.

"I gave it to you."

"When the world was a better place."

"There was no world before this. We have lived on the edge of death for centuries now."

"What they tell you in Dread School isn't the truth, Angel."

"Of course it is. Why would they teach it if it wasn't?" Asks Jake, still not taking his gun off the back of Zak's head.

"It's a long story."

"You can't make this more complicated than it already is. I am your girlfriend from the past. You gave me the gun my father gave me, a day i distinctly remember. You can show me things through your eyes, and you can make someone choke without going near them. You're cocky and arrogant and I despise you, yet you don't die when I look you in the eye. What are you?" He nods.

"Alright. I'll help you sneak in. But that's all I'm doing. I'm not getting in trouble for you again." Again? Again?! He's nuts. Completely and utterly NUTS.

"Sneak in where?" I ask suspiciously.

"Headquarters. That's as far as I'm taking you. You can figure out the rest by yourself."

"Fire can I talk to you a minute?" I glance at Jake behind Zak. He motions with his head.  I sigh and walk behind Zak to Jake. "I don't think this is a good idea."

"Why not? I want answers. This map led me into this mess with Zak.  I need to figure out what is going on."

"Why can't we just focus on the map?"

"What if the map has something to do with it? Why would Jock give me a map that led me straight through Zak's territory without a reason? It doesn't make any sense that Zak would just randomly meet up with me in a forest in the middle of no where.  You have to go with this, just once Jake." He doesn't look convinced. "For me?" His face softens a bit, and he nods.

"Alright. Just this once. That's it. Then we are focusing on the map." I nod and smile.

"You guys done debating this shit so we can get a move on?" Asks Zak, already walking ahead. I quickly grab my bag, knife, and map, and run to catch up with him.
