7. Money

I was in the back getting dressed in my daily shorts and hoodie when the boys walked in with my handler and Mike. They were laughing like they had all been old buddies. I had just quickly washed my hair and let it down and pulled a purple beanie over my head.

“Look who’s getting all spiffied up?” Mike joked, making me roll my eyes.

“I look like I do every time I leave here after a match.” I pointed out. Mike started laughing and dug through his pockets.

“Here’s the pay for tonight- a new all time high. You knocking that girl out gained you a hell of bidders and a hell of a high bidding price.” Mike said as he pulled out a wad of cash. My mouth dropped open as he started counting.

“How much is there…?” I asked quietly.

“Enough for you to bail Dan out about ten or eleven times.” Mike said with a smile. A smile formed on my face, realizing that I was getting better and better. “Alright, here’s twenty thousand for tonight.” I took the wad of cash and put a rubber band around it. “And the ten thousand for me since I’m your fabulous coach, and five thousand for your wonderful handler.” Mike said, walking over to my handler.

“Thanks Mike…” I said, truly thankful.

“No…thank you. If it wasn’t for you, I’d be jobless and broke.” I giggled as he patted my back. “Keep up the good work- you’re going places kid.” I smiled as him and my handler walked out.

“Damn Bethany…you make bank just for one fight…” Zayn said. I shrugged as I slipped the money deep into my backpack.

“It all depends on the fight. I could make anywhere between nothing and everything. It depends how bad I beat the opponent and how much money the bidders have.”

“So you never have a set source of income…?” Louisa asked. I shook my head slowly.

“And I never have a set date for a match either. I only find out a few days before hand so…I have to make this money last. There have been times where I’ve gone months without money and I needed to pretty much…do some things I didn’t want to do.” I shrugged, suddenly not wanting to talk about it. “It isn’t an easy life, but it can be good money. That’s why I do it.”

“Why don’t you just get a regular job?” Liam asked.

“Do you see someone working part time at Starbucks making this much in one day?” I asked sassily.

“No...I’m afraid not.” Liam said slowly.

“Exactly…as long as fights keep coming in, I’m going to be fine.” I pointed out. “Are we ready to go?” I asked. Everyone nodded and I led them outside.

“How about we go back to our place and just get some take-out?” Harry suggested.

“That’s fine by us; Bethany?” Niall asked. I shrugged and nodded.

“Sure.” They all nodded and we walked out to their cars so we could get to their house. Part of me was a little nervous to be going back to their place because I knew from just how they acted and dressed, they were nothing like me.
