“We had our hunches sweetie…but…it’s okay.” Maryellen, Jared’s mom said.

“How is it okay? I don’t…”

“Look, we know about that lifestyle, how those people live, and when he met you, Jared knew you were a fighter and how you interacted with us, how you live your life, it’s how Crystal lived her life.” Mark, Jared’s dad said.

“So you aren’t going to turn me in?”

“Even if we did, we know Crystal would not want that.”

“Harry recognized her; Louis’s friend…” Jared pointed out.

“We’ll talk to him…” Mark said slowly. I nodded and started shoving food into my mouth, scared of what was going to happen to me now.

When I got home that night, Liam was waiting at my door. This gave me an extremely uneasy feeling and I felt like I was going to die right there and then.

“Bethany, we need to talk…” I unlocked my door and Liam followed me inside.

“What’s going on?”

“Louis knows. Harry found out when he saw you with Jared earlier today. He and Louis figured it out…”

“What are they going to do to me…?”

“You should probably get out of town for a bit…” I nodded and kissed Liam’s cheek.

“Thank you, Liam…”

“Just…be careful. I know it was all an accident, but Harry and Louis may not see it that way.” I choked back tears and nodded.

“Tell Louis I’m sorry and tell Harry I love him…” Liam nodded and got up and left. As soon as he left, I rushed to pack a small backpack of clothes and that’s when I started hearing sirens. I got nervous and grabbed a few hundred dollars and bolted outside, trying to get out and hide. I jumped from a window in the hall and landed in a back ally as I saw the cops rush up to my apartment. I knew what was happening and I was about to break down. I was going to jail.

“She was just here…” I heard a voice say from the window above where I was standing. The place looks like she just got back.

“She has to be close by.” It was Harry’s voice that I heard. My heart was breaking inside so I pulled my phone out and called him. “Wait, this is her…” I took a deep breath and waited for the phone to be picked up. “Bethany.”

“Tell Louis I’m sorry.”

“Just turn yourself in. Where are you?”

“I love you.” I said, then hung up, smashing my phone. They heard the smash and came running to the window where I was looking up.

“HEY!” I heard a cop scream and I took off running. I got maybe a block away and Maryellen pulled up in her car, already opening the door.

“Come on.” I got in, in tears.

“Where are we going? I understand if you turn me in.”

“Well that’s where we are going but not for what you think.”

“What do you mean?”

“You’ll see.” I nodded as we made our way to the police station. By the time we got there, we had guns pointed at us as we walked inside. Harry and Louis, both glaring me down. I looked down and just continued inside with officers all around me and Maryellen.

“Bethany…” I looked up and saw Jared, Mike, and Mark.

“Mark?” I looked up, shocked seeing him in a suit. “I didn’t…”

“I’m with the DEA.” I nodded, still feeling like I was about to break down. The officers had dispersed and the only ones around anymore was one officer, Jared, Maryellen, Louis, and Harry. They had brought us to a different room and I was sitting there, feeling like shit.

“I’ll give you three a moment.” Mark said, escorting everyone out except Harry and Louis.

“I can’t fucking believe you would hide this from me!” Harry screamed in my face.

“I can’t believe you would show your face around us after you found out!” Louis screamed. I sat there, staring at the ceiling.

“Are you even fucking listening?!” Harry yelled. I sat up and looked at him.

“Keep yelling at me.” I said simply. Harry and Louis both looked shocked at me response and went quiet.

“What…?” Harry said slowly.

“I said keep yelling at me. I told you from day one I was not good for you, I told you from day one that I was dangerous, and that if I opened my mouth about my life you would despise me; this is why I walked away from you, but you kept pulling me in. You kept pushing me to break my boundaries and I did…because I fell in fucking love with you Harry. I knew as soon as I walked into that house, met Louis and realized I recognized him that I should have walked away at that point. When you told me your sister died doing what I do and I knew she faked her death, I should have walked away because I was walking on eggshells. I knew at some point it was all going to come out so I walked away so it would be easier for you to hate me. I walked away from you, for Louis, for your friends, for you. But you did not want to let it go. You set yourself up for this. If you didn’t follow me around, see me with Jared, you would all still be in your little happy lives but instead you’re all miserable, I’ll be facing murder charges, losing my life, and you’ll still have everything. You still have your life, your sister, your families, your friends and look at what I have. I have the memory of a guy I love, his friends I’ve come to love, a best friend who knew my secret the whole time, a family who came to love me despite knowing my secret, and sitting behind bars. Please tell me what you’ve lost in all of this?” I said, looking Harry dead in the eyes.

“Bethany…” Louis said.

“She was my life. Crystal was my life.”

“I heard the word was multiple times. Now your life is El, the boys, and your music. Now again, you two tell me what you have lost in all of this.” Louis went silent and looked down.

“You’re right.” Louis said. “Excuse me.” He stood up and walked out leaving Harry and I alone.

“I’ve lost you.” Harry said, standing up. “I lost a girl I fell in love with.” He bit his lip and walked out of the room behind Louis and I leaned back in the chair. I was done.

“What’s going to happen to her?” I asked, looking down.

“We tried to get her away but you two, being so angry got her caught so…now we have to press charges.” Mark said. “If you two just kept your mouths shut, she would still be free.”

“What can we do?”

“I don’t know. She’ll be placed in holding and she has court in a few days. I don’t know what else we can do besides testify in her behalf but I don’t think there will ever be enough people in the world to get her out of this one.” I nodded and I had an idea pop into my head. People had to testify on her behalf…now that; that I could arrange.

About a week went by and I was in my orange jumpsuit, ready to go to court and face the final judgment of whether I was guilty or innocent. I knew this was going to be hell, but I knew it had to happen; this was it.

Everything was a blur. I rose when the judge walked in, sat down when told to sit down, and kept my head down the whole time, wanting to die.

“Okay now I’ve been informed there are a few more people here to testify in Bethany’s behalf?” I looked up and saw Louis, Harry, Zayn, Liam, Niall, Mike, all of Crystal’s family, including her father, the few cops I’ve come to know over the years, Gemma, and even my brother… I started to cry and one by one they were all called to the witness stand and tried to talk on my behalf.

“Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?” I was asked.

“I swear.”

“Take a seat.” I sat down at the chair at the witness stand and looked up, ready for my questions. I was being hammered with questions about Bethany, her life, her past, the fights I’ve seen…everything…but the last question was the best one.

“Now you can’t tell me she is not violent because you watched her almost kill someone, correct?” I looked down and half smiled.

“She is not violent, no. Think about it this way, we were all teenagers once, we were all kids, and we all got into trouble, made mistakes, hurt people we loved, but in the end, we did what we had to do for the people we love. She gave me back my family, she gave back to a family hurting and was there for them when they needed her most, and she gave her brother hundreds of chances to be better and was there for him whenever he called. She does not have it in her to hurt a damn fly. She…she’s amazing, she’s caring, she has the biggest heart of anyone I have ever met, and if you took her away from me, from all these people here for her today…do you think you’ll be saving the world from a dangerous person or do you think you’ll be hurting the world for taking away someone so caring? Does that answer your question?”

“No more questions your honor.” I stepped down from the witness stand and took my seat. I looked up at Bethany who was still staring straight ahead but she looked like she was crying and I couldn’t do anything about it.

Hours and hours passed, waiting in that room for the jury to come to a decision. I could not sit here anymore and be sane. I was going insane and I felt like I needed to run free, to run away, to…to be anywhere but here. I wanted to escape.

An announcement was made after hours of waiting, saying the jury was coming back. This only made me cry more because this could either be the beginning of the rest of my life or the beginning of hell; there was no in between.

“Has the jury come to a unanimous decision?”

“Yes, we have.” I sat there in agony, waiting for the decision.

I had stepped outside; I couldn’t sit in there any longer waiting for a decision. It was almost suffocating waiting for the answer. All of a sudden, I saw camera men, people screaming, commotion everywhere as people started charging for the court room doors. I looked up, trying to see if Bethany was being taken in handcuffs or if she was free, but from the sea of people, I could see nothing.

I was trying to cut through the sea of people, trying to look for Harry. After what he had said, I needed to see him. I was being pestered with questions, microphones being shoved in my face but I kept pushing my way out. When I finally made it through, I saw Harry out of the corner of my eye waiting for me. I broke past everyone and went running to him. He saw me and opened his arms, holding me close as I jumped into his arms.

“You’re free…” Harry whispered in my ear.

“Yes…I’m free…” I whispered back. He put me down and pushed my hair to the side and kissed me.

“We’re going to be okay…I promise. It’ll all be okay…” I smiled up at him and I turned around and saw everyone who was there for me today come running to me and I got stuck in the middle of a giant group hug.

But there’s the story, the story of the fighter. She was a fighter physically and mentally but like all fighters, she made it through like every other fighter would. She ended up okay…
