Claire's new friends want to trust her, but they know she's not telling them someting important about herself.

8. The First Date

Soon enough 5 pm on Friday came around.  I stood in the mirror looking at my clothes.  I made a face at myself.  Gosh, I hope Harry doesn't think I look like an idiot.  My mom had to work late again.  I wasn't sure when she'd be home.  She works late so often that it should probably become her normal work schedule.

The doorbell rang and I practically fell down the huge flight of stairs to try and open the door.

I managed to make it to the door without killing myself.  I composed myself before opening the door to a curly haired boy with a mischievous smile.

"Hi Harry." I said, smiling.

"Hey Claire."  I felt his eyes travel from my hair to my shoes. I blushed a deep red.  "You look amazing."  He said.

I could have died from right then and there.  "Thanks Harry, you don't look to bad yourself."  That was an understatement.  Harry looked like one of those guys you see in movies or something.  Every single piece of his hair fell perfectly into place.  I fought the urge to run my fingers through his hair.

"Let me just grab my phone and I'll be ready to go."  I had barely managed to say.

I walked over to the kitchen were my phone was sitting on the counter.  I grabbed it and went back to the door.

Harry smiled, Ready?", he asked, holding out his hand.

I smiled and took his hand," Ready."

Harry walked me to his car and opened the door for me

What a gentleman.

He then jumped into the driver's side of the car.  We drove for a few minutes in silence before I felt the need to blurt out something.

"Where are we going Harry?" I asked.

Harry gave me one of his little half smiles that made you wonder if he was up to no good.  "You'll see when we get there but I promise, you're going to love it."

The rest of the car ride we sort of just made awkward small talk. We didn't really know one another.  I probably should have made some sort of started some sort of conversation, but I wasn't sure what to say.

Finally, we pulled up to this quaint little restaurant.  It had a garden-like feel.  There was an enclosed patio where people could dine.  Some white Christmas lights were strung around the outside of the building.

Harry grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the entrance of the restaurant.

Once inside, the server lead us to out table.  Harry had reserved a two-person table that was secluded away from the busyness of the restaurant.

"I don't really know you to well Claire, but i'd like to get to know you more.", Harry started.

"Well," I said, "What would you like to know about me?"

Harry's face brightened,"Let's play Twenty Question's speed version!  I ask you questions and you answer them as fast as you can!"

"Deal." I replied.

"Okay. So..." Harry thought.  He stared at the ceiling trying to figure out what to ask me first.

I snorted.  "You can't just bring up Twenty Questions and not have an idea of what you're going to ask me."

Harry gave me a look.  "Don't rush me.  I'm trying to think up an awesome first question to ask you!"

I sighed and leaned back in my chair.  After a few seconds Harry slammed his hands on the table, making me jump.

"What's your favorite color?"

"Seriously?" I said "Out of all the questions you ask me-"

"Please just answer the question ma'm.  We don't have much time." Harry said, he was trying to imitate a game show wasn't working.

"Did you ever have a pet?"

"Yea, two goldfish, three cats, and a dog."

"Favorite song?"

"All Day by Cody Simpson."

"Most embarrassing moment?"

"When the hairdresser was re-dying my hair and turned the streaks in my hair a nasty puke green.  I went to school like that for a month."

"Ever had a boyfriend?"

That threw me off guard.  "Yea, two.  They weren't very good ones though."

"Favorite part about moving to England?"

"Meeting new people and learning new things.  This place is so different from America."

"Why did you move to England?"

"I...My mom's book publishing company needed her here.  It was an easier location to contact her."  I stammered.  I was never a good liar.

Harry raised and eyebrow but continued with his questions "Best person you've met so far, besides me of course."

"Who could ever be better than you?."  I said sarcastically.  "Probably Morgan."

"Worst person?"

"Jessica.  She hasn't been exactly.....welcoming."

Harry looked at me for a moment before saying, "You can't be too hard on Jess.  She's had a really hard childhood.  Her father was killed in a motorcycle accident and her mum killed herself a month after.  She's been like a sister to me since we met in primary school."

I nodded my head.  I could sympathize with Jess.  I knew what it was like to lose a parent.

We sat there awkwardly for a minute before the food came.

We ate in mostly silence.

As we got into his car I realized that Harry hadn't finished his questions.

"Don't worry Claire.  I'll ask them when you're ready."

For the rest of the car ride I wondered what he meant.  What did he mean 'when I was ready'?

Harry stopped the car in front of my house and walked me to the door.

He leaned in.

He got so close I thought he was going to kiss me, but at the last second he moved his mouth toward me ear.  "I hope we can do this again soon." he whispered.

Harry abruptly walked toward his car.  He got in the car and sped away.

Meanwhile, I was left at the door wondering where on that date I had gone wrong.
