32. Unchanged

The biggest lie I’ve ever heard in my lifetime is that the stars aren’t in our solar system.

According to science, it is backed up with facts that the stars are actually in galaxies away from us, yet we can still see them at night.

But I’ve had experience, and I know that the stars must be right above the earth because you told me once that you’d never be galaxies away from me, and that you’d rather be a lone star.

So it must be that I’d rather believe you than in science, because truly I’d have more faith in a single human than in humanity itself.

I’ve named almost every star that I can see outside of my bedroom window, and I can tell that you’re the biggest, brightest one in my view, because I knew that when you told me you’d never leave, that it must be true.

One day, as I was walking in the coolness of the setting sun, I saw you up there and realised that even in your death, you still kept your promises.

Every night since the 21st of December, I’ve been naming every single star that appears to be around you, and tonight, I’m almost done.

I’ve written every single name down, and I hope you know that I’ll never give up faith in you.

As I look out my window now, all of the other star’s beauty is cast out by the streetlights except for yours.

As in your lifetime you were beautiful, in your death you remain unchanged.
