Love Olympus

Leora always thought her imaginary friend, Mr. Smirk, would never appear in front of her again when she was seven. When she wakes up one morning to find him bruised up in front of her claiming he's not really her imaginary friend, but her Kupid. Things take a drastic turn for the worst as Mr. Smirk has little time to explain his disheveled appearance and why he has come back after ten years of a random hiatus. He quickly begins to tell her who he is and what he has come for. Mr. Smirk comes from the underworld. A place where billions of creature live and do the mediocre jobs for the gods and goddesses. Mr. Smirk is one of the seven billion Kupids assigned to a human. Every couple of years or so the Kupids get a chance to escape their dull life as a Kupid by entering their human in a game called the Love Olympus. If chosen the Kupid's assigned human is plucked from earth and placed into the underworld to not only play the game, but fight for their life.

2. Underworld

What would you do if you found an oddly good looking middle aged man leaning over your bed staring at you?

You obviously scream.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, was what I did. The one and only Imaginary friend I've shunned from my memories was standing above me. His out in front of me as if to get to me to listen to whatever he had to say.

Mr. Smirk, with a bruised purple eye, hair awkwardly messy and his usual suit (from my childhood) torn forcefully pushed a hand onto my mouth. I shoved his hand away and pulled myself backwards.

"What the-" I was cut off shortly as my head met the floor from falling. Pain progressed through my head and my body, however I was more preoccupied at the moment as to why Mr. Smirk suddenly appeared.

"Don't scream!" Mr. Smirk frantically begged. "Don't-Leora just listen I came here-"

"You're not real," I whispered to myself crawling backwards. "You're not real!" I crawled until I met the wall.

"I'm real-very real Leora-"

"No!" I shouted. "You're not."

"Yes," he half laugh half huffed. "I am-"

"No," I shook my head trying so hard to convince myself he wasn't standing there.

"Listen-Leora I'm running out of time I have to tell you this-"

"Tell me nothing and get the hell out of my room!" I snapped pointing to the door. I blinked and held my breath and closed my eyes. He's not real, I told myself. "He's not real," I whispered, placing two firm hands on my ears.

Opening my eyes I suddenly looked Mr. Smirks way and he was gone. I blinked several times, shocked. Was-was this my imagination the whole time? Or was he really there? I got up quickly and looked around. My heart was beating so hard; it felt like it was about to explode any second. Sighing out loud I laughed awkwardly and placed a shaking hand on my forehead.

"I'm going crazy.." I muttered walking over to my bed. "You're going crazy Venus.." I sniffed fixing my bed.

"You're not crazy," said a voice. I looked around swiftly. No one was there.

"Who-who's there?" I shouted. Someone tapped my shoulder. I turned around wide eyed.

"Hi," Mr. Smirk waved. "Where were we again?" He placed a finger on his mouth. "Oh yeah!" He snapped his fingers. "The part where I was just going to tell you-"

I threw a pillow in his direction. "Shut up!" I screamed. "Do you not understand? Get out!" I threw another, screeching. Mr. Smirk casually dodges them, but this time he looked annoyed.

"Leora!" He shouted dodging. "For crying out loud can you listen to me for one second!"

"No!" I huffed stopping for a second. "I don't want to listen to anything you have to say."

"With a scream like that your mom is bound to come upstairs!" Mr. Smirk whispered viciously. "Or does she still go to work early?"

"She still goes to work early-" I stopped short and pressed my lips together. "You still know that?"

"Hello?" Mr. Smirk raised his eyebrows. "Been with you since birth, of course I know!"

"That doesn't mean anything!" I moved my jaw from side to side. "Look," I tried to catch my breath. My heart long gone from control, beating like a maniac. "J-just leave, please-"

"Fine! Fine! Just great," Mr. Smirk snapped, clearly annoyed. "Go ahead don't listen," he glared. "But don't come crying to me when you're about to die."

"What?" I blinked. "What do you mean about to die?" I questioned frantically. The anxiety hitting me in the gut.

"So now you want to listen?" Mr. Smirk snorted.

"What do you mean?" I whispered staring at him intently.

"This is what I've been trying to tell you!" Mr. Smirk exasperatedly threw his hands in the air. "Sheesh if you listened then you wouldn't be going absolutely crazy!"

"What do you mean I'm going to die?" I asked the question more specifically. My fingers tips turning cold all of a sudden.

"Leo.." He sighed, using the nickname he used to always call me.

I flinched. The memories hitting me hard now. All the energy I had evaporating as I decided to listen.

Something teling me to anyway.

"I'm sorry..." Mr. Smirk scratched his hair. "It's all my fault," he huffed walking over to my bed. "I-screwed us both over."

"What do I have to do with this?" I snapped. "I haven't seen you for how long? I have nothing to do with this."

"I'm not who you think I am Leora.." Mr. Smirk's voice dipped low. "I'm not your imaginary friend... I'm your Kupid."

"Kupid?" I blinked. "As in the greek god?"

"Sort of." He scratched his chin. "Every human has a Kupid, a Kupid in which looks after them and guides them to their soul mate." Mr. Smirk huffed like this was common knowledge. I glared at him.

"You got to be kidding me," I snorted. "My imaginary friend is telling me he's... Kupid!"

"I'm serious," Mr. Smirks voice like a knife. It cuts me off swiftly. "Listen please," he calmly took one step forward.

I stared at his shoe. All sorts of emotions running through me all at once I felt exhausted even though I just woke up. For some reason I couldn't find the guts to open my mouth and this time decided to listen to him. For some weird reason.

I walked over to my bed and sat down at the other side of my bed as Mr. Smirk sat opposite of me.

"Every human from birth is assigned a Kupid when they're born. We basically help guide you to your soulmate. We look after you in several ways, but cannot interfere with your decisions. We guide you through your consciousness and through a variety of other things like signs. In my world-"

"Your world?" I raised an eyebrow.

"I'm from the underworld," Mr. Smirk got up. "It's inside earth."

I blinked, confused.

"Oh god I knew this would be hard to explain," Mr. Smirk rubbed his eyes.

"Oh yeah because telling someone they come from another world is so easy to explain." I nodded.

Mr. Smirk bluntly ignored me.

"Okay look," he sighed. "Imagine an earth inside earth, but the one inside earth is smaller."

"Okay.." I nodded going along. I had a hard time understanding, but I decided to believe anyway. For now so he could quickly say whatever it meant about me dying.

"The underworld is basically where us guiders live. We're like angels in some types of ways, but not at the same time. The Gods and Goddesses are like the big dogs, you rarely see them. We do the mediocre jobs for the Gods and Goddesses, basically the small and dirty jobs."

"Death angels, Cupids, Soul extractors, demon hunters, Karmans-"

"Karmans?" I asked confused.

"Ever heard of Karma?" Mr. Smirk asked. I nodded, knowing what Karma is.

"Well Karmans deliver Karma.. Basically what goes around really does come around. I wanted to be a Karman when I was younger, because it looked so much fun. But low and behold I got stuck as a Kupid."

"What's so bad about being a Kupid?" I blinked.

"You see how many people are on earth? More than seven  billion! When you're a Kupid you have very strict rules. I mean some of them I scoff at." Mr. Smirk rolled his eyes.

"I bet you already broke one by showing me who you are," I guessed.

"Right you are!" Mr. Smirk nodded. "That's rule number one on our guide. Never, ever, ever show yourself to your human."

"What's the punishment?"

"Death," Mr. Smirk shrugged.

"But you're not dead?" I scrunched my face up in confusion.

"That... I'll get too in a moment," Mr. Smirk stuttered. "Where was I? Ah! Yes... I always wanted to be a Karman-"

"Mr. Smirk!" I snapped.

"Okay," He shuddered.

"What do I have to do with all of this?" I glared. Something told me I shouldn't expect anything half as decent of what he was going to tell me.

"You remember when I left, right?" Mr. Smirk suddenly changed the subject.

"Of course," I sighed. I stared at the floor absentmindedly. "You just left," I looked up at him.

"I was taken," Mr. Smirk confessed. "I didn't just leave... I was caught because-"

"You showed yourself to me?" I connected the dots.

"You're still the same," Mr. Smirk sighed. "Smart as ever," he sniffed.

"So you were suppose to die?" I asked with wide eyes.

"Not exactly, but yes.." Mr. Smirk nodded. "I was taken to the head department, that's where these guys close to the Gods and Goddesses are. I was tortured for about two years and then sent to jail for some time until I was released just a couple of days ago..." Mr. Smirk suddenly went quiet. "That's when I screwed myself."

"How?" I questioned.

"Well...." He bit his lower lip nervously. "Let's just say I met one of my wealthy friends in the underworld. He's not exactly a saint, but has some very powerful friends. He made a wager with me since the Love Olympus was coming around."

My gut dropped slightly. "Love Olympus?" I asked through clenched teeth. Why did I feel so scared in that moment? I gulped down my fear and eagerly listened with anger.

"The Love Olympus is like the Olympics for you humans, but much... Much, much more vulgar and disturbingly amazing. It happens every decade and it involves not only Kupids, but humans as well." Mr. Smirk trailed off.

"Mr. Smirk." I stared at him. "Tell me right now what I have to do with this." My voice shook. "I don't care about all that other bullshit, tell me right now!" I found myself shaking. Tears handing at the edge of  my lower lashes.

Mr. Smirk stopped short in that moment. His face expressionless. He continued softly.

"Every time the Love Olympus comes around. This is the epic chance for a Cupid to get rich or die trying. Millions enter themselves and their human-"

"What?" I snapped standing up. "You entered me?" I screamed walking around my bed and towards him.

"Just listen for a second!" Mr. Smirk stood up. "It's not what you think.." He took several steps backwards with his hands up.

"You conniving-" I raised my fist.

"Wait!" Mr. Smirk shouted, protecting his face. I stopped halfway, breathing heavily. "Wait.." He frantically begged. "You get something in the end if you win." Mr. Smirk quickly put his hands to his side. I clenched my jaws hard together and lowered my fist.

"You get two wishes from Cupid himself. Two wishes in which you can wish for anything. You and your male partner."

"And you?" I ignored his last sentence. "Do you participate in this... Love Olympus?"

"No," Mr. Smirk confessed.

"How do you get eliminated?" I whispered.

Mr. Smirk paled and answerd shortly. "Most probably death."

I ran out the door with a coat as fast as I could. I didn't want to here about this Love Olympus nonsense. Even if Mr. Smirk looks dead serious, which is like a huge alarm going off in my mind, I won't have it! He can't force me to do this and besides. Why should I risk my life for a stupid jerk who risked my life for his own selfish reasons.

I walked hurriedly down the street with no intention of stopping.

"Leora-wait-you can't-Venus!" Mr. Smirk grabbed my arm.

"Let go," I hissed and shook his hand away.

"Leora you'll die a horrible death if you continue to walk," Mr. Smirk shouted as if he was in pain. I turned around wide eyed and shocked at his attempt to stop me from walking.

"You dare threaten me?" I huffed taking two steps forward. "You actually have the audacity to threaten me when I haven't seen you for ten years?" I whispered violently. "Do you understand how crazy I sound talking to someone who doesn't exist!?" I pointed his way. "How do you expect me to be okay with this," I could barely breathe as I spoke.

"You don't understand.." Mr. Smirk's eyes were glassy. "I can't force you to agree to do the Love Olympus, but there's a consequence."

"You're damn right you can't force me!" I snapped with clenched teeth. I turned back around to continue walking.

"Once entered into the Love Olmpys you have no choice, but to agree Leora." Mr. Smirk called out. I tilted my head to the side, listening and stopped walking all together. My heart beating so hard I could barely breathe.

"What's happening to me?" I whispered to myself as I placed a shaking hand on my chest.

"You don't understand the underworld Leora. They have multiple vicious tricks up their sleeve. They give you every intention of having a choice, but you don't. You never do. Once entered you either have one chance of saying yes or no. If you say no the underworlder's will find a way to kill you in the most unspeakable manner. Trust me I've seen it happen."

"And what if I do say no?" I turned around to face him, challenging Mr. Smirk.

All of a sudden a passing car's tire looses it's grip and hits a poll several feet infront me. I watched as the metal pole fell inches away from me, sparks flying everywhere. My eyes bulged out of my head with panic. Screaming I fell backwards trying to get away.

My palms scratched in the process. I sat on the cold conrete floor staring at the car. The tears now undoubtedly running down my face.

Mr. Smirk walked ahead of me and looked down at me. I didn't know what to think or how to think.

This was happening.

"That's their warning," Mr. Smirk's expression was a mask full of fear.

I couldn't believe yet it was happening right in front of me. The sound of my heartbeat suddenly travelled up to my ears and for a second I could only feel cold fingertips slowly creeping up my arm and down my back.

"I'm sorry." Mr. Smirk mouthed the words. "I'm sorry." He said again.

The air around suddenly dropped below zero, my breath turning white.

"Why..?" I asked unable to say anything more.

"I'm sorry.." He scrunched his eyebrows.

"You leave for ten years ruining my life with the nonsense of you being real. An-and you tell me all this crap about an underworld?" I spoke each word with a chosen venom.

"The choice is yous," Mr. Smirk coldly looked away. I knew he was faking the cold look. His hands were shaking. Once a coward always a coward, I thought.

"Does it look like a have a choice?" I stared him down with icy rage.

"No," Mr. Smirks lips barely moved.

"Then yes," I whispered.

Mr. Smirk looked at me in that moment. His blue eyes clearer than ever. His face as if haven't aged since I was seven was still smooth looking like ever. Now, noticing for the first time, I could see it. He oddly pointy ears. The gold name tag on his chest saying, Mr. Smirk, under it saying Kupid.

I chuckled in that moment. Even though I was crying. I laughed to a point I couldn't breathe anymore.

"Thank you," Mr. Smirk raised his lips into a sad smile and snapped his fingers.

A black cloud appearing out of nowhere and filling my surroandings. Just like that. My fate was sealed.
