Jared

This was worse than crap falling from the sky. This was worse than aliens coming down from mars to kill us all. This was like hell being brought up from the ground ‘cause the devil couldn’t handle it. How did Brady know we were here? He knew I wouldn’t do it. Damn it! Saffron and I stood up, turning in the other direction. Three other gang members stood in our way.

Hey Saffron, long time no see. Glad you’re making friends, too bad it’s with the wrong person,” Brady grinned.

Saffron scowled. “Don’t ever tell me who I can and can’t be friends with Brady.”

Collins took a step towards us reaching into his jacket. “Being with him has made you stupid.”

I thought the punch I gave might’ve knocked some sense into that head of yours. Obviously it hasn’t, might have to do it again,” I said taking a step closer to Brady.

Your boyfriends a bit obsessed isn’t he,” Brady laughed. He moved his hand from his jacket. He watched Saffron curiously. This annoyed me.

So tell me Saffron… what brings you here? I mean I can understand why Lawson’s here but you…? No, you’re just not that sort of girl are you?” he smiled darkly.

How would you like to make a deal?” Brady asked slyly.

I knew exactly what he was going to ask her. And it was the exact thing he had asked me 2 years ago.

Brady,” I warned

He grinned. He knew exactly what he was doing.

Brady don’t, please. Leave her out of this,” I pleaded with him.

Saffron turned her head to me, her face puzzled.

Jay what’s going on?” she asked.

Well go on Jay, what is going on?” he said pulling a black gun from his pocket.

Saffron

What was going on? Why did Jared look so scared? Like something bad was going to happen. I looked at the black gun in Brady’s hand. What was Brady going to offer? Why didn’t Jared want him to? What did he know that he wasn’t telling me?

Please Brady, let’s talk about this. Anyone but her please,” Jared pleaded again.

Brady ignored him. “How’s life in care Saffron?”

I stared at him blankly.

Your parents got blown up, right?”

I winced. “Who wants to know,” I said.

He laughed one cold, hard laugh. He paused momentarily. “So, what’re you going to do about it?”

I frowned. What was he on about? Jared grabbed my hand and pulled me behind him.

I mean it Brady. Leave her out of this.” This time it was a warning.

Be quiet Lawson, or I‘ll kill her. You know I will. She’s no use to me, yet,” he said.

Kill me?!

Give it your best shot Collins, I dare you.” Jared took another step forward.

Brady waved a hand and two men with guns started towards us. I gasped. Jared glared at them. I looked closer and could see that they weren’t adults. They were children, at least thirteen. Thirteen… then, it all happened so fast. Jared pulled out a silver gun from his pocket and fired it at the gang member standing in our way. He cried out in agony. Brady swung a punch at Jared but he missed. Another gun shot was fired. Another scream. Then we ran. Down the road, through alleys. Jared pulled me into a car park. It was dark now; we shouldn’t have come out so late. We hid in the shadows.

Jared, what the hell is going on?” I whispered.

It’s too late for that now. You have to get out of here,” he whispered back.

Why me? Jared you can’t leave me!”

Shhh! They can’t know you’re here.”

But I-.” he cut me off.

Saph you have to go back home now. Don’t argue with me.”

Jared please, just tell me what’s going on.”

I can’t. Ok I can’t. I wish I could, honest. But if I do you could get hurt. I can’t risk that, I-.”

I’d had enough. It was my turn to talk.

It’s too late for that. Jay you just shot someone! You could go to jail!” I screeched.

Shhh!” he paused. “If I tell you everything will you go?”

I nodded. He sighed

I didn’t shoot him.”

I glared at him. “Don’t lie to me Jared.”

I’m not lying. It was a blank. It was all acted out; I just made up my own version as I went along. This wasn’t part of the plan. You see I work with him… Brady. And we work for Mr Carson. It was a setup. When we were arguing and I stormed out back into my room, he called me and told me to bring you to him. He said he wanted to help you. He’s lying; he wants you in his ‘gang’. He thinks you’re so wound up ‘cause of what happened to you parents. He knows I don’t want you involved but…” he stopped talking.

Mr Carson… why did that name sound so familiar? “But what? Continue.”

That’s all you need to know.”

I rolled my eyes and started to walk away he pulled me back.

Don’t go out there!”

Why not? They have blanks as well.”

No they don’t. Only one person has a blank, the rest don’t.”

You said it was a setup.”

I know what I said!” he snapped. He composed himself and spoke again. “It’s a setup for you. It’s a test, to see if you’re hard enough. You need to get back now.”

What about you?”

He looked away. “Probably be dealt with later.”

I stared at the silver gun in his hand. Blank or not it was still a real honest to god gun. “How long have you been involved in this?”

He didn’t answer

I asked you a question, Jared. How long?”

“Two years. I’ve told you everything. Now leave.”

“Why did you lie to me Jared?”

“I didn’t lie to you I just kept things from you. That’s keeping you safe not lying to you.”

“You said you had nothing to do with this.”

“That was then this is now. Things change, people change… I changed… I’m sorry. Just stay away from me, it’s too dangerous. I'm dangerous.” He looked back at me with his green eyes. They were suddenly cold and full of hatred. That was how he was before he met me. We were the same, we’d both lost people and now I was losing him.

“That’s gonna be hard seeing as we live in the same house.”

“I’m not staying there anymore.”

I looked at the floor. There was a loud bang. Another shot had been fired, it was close. Jared moved to stand in front of me.

“Someone’s here. We need to leave,” he murmured.

“No way out Lawson,” a voice said. “Not this time. This time you a goner. This time you’re dead.”

Jared

Saffron was standing still next to me. She looked in the direction of the voice.

“Drop your gun Lawson. Now,” the voice said. It sounded sugar sweet. It was an act, a trick. Whatever it was it wasn’t working.

I didn’t know who it was but it was clear that it wasn’t Brady. He would’ve already shot me. I held onto my gun. Whoever it was didn’t know it was a blank.

“Put the gun down Lawson! I won’t tell you again.”

Then I realised that the voice was a woman’s.

“Damn it Lawson. I’ll shoot a hole through you if I have to.”

“Who are you?” Saffron said. She sounded slightly pissed.

“That’s none of your business,” the woman snapped back.

Saffron took a menacing step towards the woman.

“Saffron don’t,” I warned.

“If anyone wanted us dead they would’ve shot us by now. I’m guessing that you want us alive. Am I right?” her question was directed at the woman.

“Yes, you are.” She stepped out of the shadows. She was packing a gun that probably had bullets. What was I talking about? It definitely had bullets!

She was smiling. A smile of pure innocence. No one that was worse than this woman could pull off a smile like that. That was if there was anyone worse than her. I knew who she was. How could I have missed that oh-so-innocent voice? Her fiery red hair waved around her like a wild flame. Her navy blue suit and sky blue shirt brought out the blue in her cold and heartless eyes. Her perfect features made her seem sweet making her seem less of a threat. But that was what she wanted you to think. She wanted you to give her your trust and when you least expected it should would double cross you. Even though she was pure evil she was without a doubt one of the fittest women I’d seen. Vanessa Scott was a cold hearted killer and wasn’t owned by any man. Well that was until she met Robert Carson and even then he didn’t really own her. In fact you could hardly say that they were together, they just wanted each other for sex that was all. It was just mutual convenience. Nothing else. Not that anyone would dare tell either one of them that to their faces, not unless they wanted a bullet in their head.

A black Lexus pulled up behind her. Someone opened the door. She turned round; I could see Brady in the driver’s seat. His Glock23 was on the passenger seat next to him.

“Miss Scott,” he said winking at her.

She smiled slightly then composed her face. She turned back to us.

“Get in,” she said.

Neither I nor Saffron moved an inch.

“Let’s put it this way. Get in the bloody car or I will blast your sorry arses to kingdom come. Was that clear enough for you?” she said sweetly. She smiled again.

We got the message. Saffron got in and I got in after her. Miss Scott told us to put our seatbelts on. “We wouldn’t want any accidents now, would we?” she said.

She was beyond creepy but I had to hand it to her she was good. She could get what she wanted and yet she didn’t need to shout. I was one of the lucky few not to be shot by Miss Scott. She had a very short temper and even calling her by her first name whether you were employed by her or Carson you were a dead man. Respect was everything to her. I remembered when I’d first started working with her and Carson. I’d made the mistake by calling her by her first name. She’d slapped me round the face so hard that she broke one of her fingers in the process. She let me off only because I was young and supposedly had more days left than others to annoy her.

Brady drove fast and we were at the compound quicker than I thought we’d be.

“Out please,” Miss Scott opened the car door to let us out. We walk through a door and into a cold hall.

“Get your filthy hands of me,” a voice yelled out angrily.

Two men in black suits were half carrying and half dragging two boys. I recognised them instantly. Trevor and Kyle. From the looks of it Saph recognised them too. Well they did go to our school (and were more of Brady’s cronies). Miss Scott walked towards the boys. They instantly stopped struggling. A look of fear crossed their faces.

“Well, well, well. What have we here? You two have been naughty haven’t you? Disobeying a direct order? I don’t think so.” she spoke to them slowly, as if they were very young children.

“M-Miss Scott there was something we had to tell you. It was about B-Brady. We knew we wouldn’t get a word in edgeways if we didn’t come and t-talk to you personally. We know that you like to hear everyone’s side of the story so we came here instead so that we could-.” Trevor stopped talking. Her Taurus PT111 was pressed against his temple.

“Uh-uh boys, it doesn’t work that way.”

Trevor didn’t look scared anymore and neither did Kyle. They both knew what was coming.

“Any last words Trevor?” she asked with a smile. She stroked the trigger.

“See you in hell,” he spat.

She laughed. “I look forward to it.”

She shot him. Saffron jumped at the noise. The guard dropped him shocked. Miss Scott looked at him. “Let that be a lesson to you. All of you.” Then she looked directly at me. She was obviously pointing out the fact that I too had disobeyed a direct order and was on ‘thin ice’, which was probably one of her favourite sayings. She looked at the other guard that was holding Kyle.

“Simon take him inside. Steve please remove the body from the premises,” her emotionless voice rang through the hallway. The body… she’d shot him without a care in the world.

Steve dragged Trevor’s body out of the compound. Simon pulled Kyle into a room. Brady followed them in. “I’m going to enjoy this,” he smiled darkly.

“Brady,” Miss Scott held him back. “Don’t be too hard on him, dear.”

“I wouldn’t even think of it,” he said sarcastically.

She let go of him. He started to walk off.

“One more thing,” she paused. Brady stopped walking. “Don’t kill him.”

He sighed and shut the door. The sound of someone being banged into a wall rocketed around the hall. A groan and finally a pained scream. The door re-opened. Steve left the room and went outside. Miss Scott cocked her gun as an indication to go through the door. And that’s when all hell broke loose.

Saffron

Go on then, Brady. Shoot me. Your loss,” Kyle sneered.

Brady punched Kyle in his gut; he spat in his face and punched him again. Kyle doubled over coughing and spluttering. He wiped his face with the back of his hand and said, “You're going to rot in hell for this Brady, you just wait.” Kyle spat blood on the floor.

He slid on a knuckle duster. “D’you really think I’d waste my time and energy on a waste of space like you? I’m just here to make you wish you were dead. She’ll make it a reality,” He said pointing to me.

What?” Jared and I said in unison.

No, she’s not getting into this,” Jared situated himself between me and Brady.

You don’t call the shots here, Lawson. Now move before I get her to shoot you as well.” Miss Scott said darkly. That was the first time I’d noticed that she wasn’t doing that alluring smile that made you do whatever she asked of you. I noticed she had a gun in her hand. The same one she’d used to kill Trevor. I was instantly on my guard. If she could shoot someone in cold blood for one mistake who knew what else she was capable of doing. There was no way in hell I was shooting anyone, let alone Jared. They couldn’t make me, could they? Miss Scott motioned for Brady to continue with the dirt he was dishing out to Kyle. Brady took a menacing step towards him.

Wait,” she murmured.

Brady stopped dead in his tracks.

Our guests are still here. Be a gent and escort them out of the room for a while, Brady.”

Brady nodded and looked pointedly at the door and then back to me and Jared. It was obvious, get out or get beaten up and thrown out.

I said show them out, not look at the door Brady…” Miss Scott rolled her eyes.

Brady cracked his knuckles. Jared was tugging me out the door. He gave one last sympathetic glance at Kyle and shut the door.

The screams started.

Jared

It’d been going on for ages now. I could hear Kyle’s cries of agony. Saffron cringed into the seat again. I knew she would’ve begged them to stop if she could.

Saph come over here.”

She looked up. She was crying. They did that to her. I swear one day I was going to make them pay. I was going to kill all of them. Slowly and painfully. Just like they did to Kyle. Just like what they were doing to him. Kyle… he didn’t deserve this.

Slowly, Saffron came and sat next to me. She leant on my shoulder; I wrapped my arm instinctively around her. She seemed to relax a bit. We sat like that for a while but the peace didn’t last long.

VANESSA DON’T HE’S USING YOU!” Kyle’s screams were getting louder and louder.

Miss Scott laughed. BANG! Saffron screamed. They’d killed him. At least she didn’t have to. Uncontrollable sobs came from her mouth and her body started to shake. I had to get her to calm down. I pulled away from her slowly. Violent shudders were rippling through her body.

Saph, look at me,” I told her.

She kept on shaking her head from side to side.

Saffron look at me!” I yelled.

She lifted her head up and was immediately still. I touched her cheek and brushed away her tears.

Calm down. It’s ok. It’s over now. Your fine, see? We’re gonna be ok. Everything’s fine.” God knew I was lying and she did to.

Tell me the truth Jared. We’re not getting out of here alive, are we?”

I looked at her, really looked at her. Lie Jared. Keep her safe.

Tell her the truth!

I shook my head solemnly. Silent tears rolled down her cheeks.

That’s what I thought.”
