Death Trap

I pulled the trigger…

Eight years ago Saffron Bridges’ parents died in a fire and her brother was murdered, as far as she knows… Now she has entered a deadly game and there can only be one winner, one wrong move and it’s all over. She must uncover the truth about her past and what really happened to her family.

Guns. Money. Drugs. They all lead to one thing... Death.

4. Three

I just couldn’t stop crying. I was stronger than this. I was harder than this. I’d watched my parents burn in my own home. So why did this bother me so much. Was it because I knew we were next?

“Saffron, you need to stop crying,” Jared’s soft voice broke the silence. “You mustn’t let them see you cry. They can use that against you.”

I ignored him. I could show my emotions if I wanted to. It was his fault if he couldn’t take it. He should’ve told me what was going on.

The door opened. It was Brady. “You two can come in now.”

We walked through the door. Kyle was leaning against the wall clutching his leg. He groaned. He was breathing. Kyle was alive. But how, they’d shot him hadn’t they? His face was battered and bruised. I looked at his leg, it was covered in blood. They had shot him alright. Were they going to make us watch them kill him? All of a suddenly, Brady made a grab for Jared. Because it was so unexpected Jared wasn’t able to fight him off. Brady put a gun to Jared’s head.

Miss Scott smiled. “Shoot the traitor or I will have Brady kill Jared. He also didn’t do as he was told and I’m not very happy that I had to send Brady and my other boys out to come and find both of you. So here’s how it works, it’s very simple my dear. Kill Kyle or Jared will die. Is that clear?” She placed her gun in my hand and pressed it firmly into my palm. I looked from Kyle to Jared and back again. Jared was struggling against the sheer force of Brady’s forearm being pressed against his throat. But it was no use. Brady’s arm was like a boa constrictor. It tightened each time Jared moved. I couldn’t watch him die. I couldn’t see him hurt.

“I’m waiting,” Miss Scott said impatiently. Brady’s gun clicked, ready to shoot at the first command.

I stepped closer to Kyle.

“Hurry up please I haven’t got all day, Miss Bridges. Your brother would’ve done the job quicker.”

That hit me.

“Saph don’t!” it sounded like Jared was choking.

“Be quiet,” Miss Scott told Jared.

“Please, Saffron. Don’t, she’s a liar. She’s going to get you to do something really bad. Saph please, don’t do it,” Kyle croaked. “She’s not trying to help you. None of them are.” His eyes flickered to Jared. “Please… don’t shoot.”

Miss Scott looked pointedly at the gun in my hand.

“Saffron d-don’t shoot him.” Jared was choking. He couldn’t breathe. Brady was suffocating him.

“I’m sorry.” I pulled the trigger. Kyle’s body slumped forward. I dropped the gun on the floor.

“Very good Miss Bridges you see what can happen when you do as you’re told?” she snapped her fingers and Brady released Jared. He shouldn’t have done that. Jared was spitting nails. He turned on Brady and punched him in his face with his bad hand. Jared didn’t even wince. Brady dropped to the floor.

“Maybe this time you’ll stay there, rotten bugger,” Jared sneered.

He turned at the sound of his name and was greeted by a slap round the face. Miss Scott had hit him. He didn’t move a muscle he didn’t flinch. He just stood there staring at her. And then he smiled.

“That’s not the first time you’ve ever done that to me Vanessa,” he grinned.

Her eyes narrowed. “And if you’re smart then you won’t make the same mistake twice.”

He laughed again. “Yes Miss Scott.”

“Very good Mr Lawson,” she paused. “Now, I want you and Brady to kiss and make up, you two need to cooperate for your next task. Don’t screw it up.”

“Yes ma’am.” He turned to Brady. “You heard her. Get up ya lazy git.”

Brady stood. There was a red mark on the right side of his face. He grabbed the collar of Jared’s jacket and slammed him into the wall.

“Not sure you want to do that,” he warned.

“Oh yeah?” Brady smirked. “You and whose army?”

“I could snap your neck quicker than you could shoot me. You know that right?”

Brady laughed and let him go. “Good to have you back, man.”
“It’s a pleasure.” Jared grinned.

They slapped hands. What the hell was going on?

“Good. Now clear this mess up. And Jared, take care of her. Show her the ropes. No mistakes.” Miss Scott left the room.

I understood now. It was a game. I was their puppet. The one who did all the dirty work. What had Miss Scott said about my brother? He would’ve done it quicker. What would she know about Jack? I blinked. Jared caught my eye.

“Saph, are you okay?” he asked.

I didn’t answer. I didn’t trust him. I couldn’t trust him. He’d lied to me to get what he wanted.

“Jared look at her hands. They’re shaking like crazy. Get her out of here.” Brady watched me closely.

Jared looked at Kyle’s dead body. “You can’t take him out of here on your own. Vanessa won’t like it.”

“I’ll deal with Vanessa. Just get her out of here.”

Jared nodded. I can’t stay upright. This is just a dream. It’s just a dream. I’m fading. I’m falling through a hole. Everything went black.

That look she gave me… it was like she didn’t know who I was anymore. Did I even know who I was?

Her chest rose and fell. I’d carried her into the room we were in earlier and put her on the couch. She’d passed out. From shock I’d imagine.

“Jared don’t worry about her. She’ll be fine.”

Brady was starting to get on my nerves.

“No she won’t. She holds onto things. She knows how to hold a grudge and this will probably set off her more rebellious side,” I told him.

He grinned. “Mate, that’s a good thing. Why else d’you think I came to get her? If you’d listened and brought her to us, Vanessa would’ve let me finish of Kyle.”

“He didn’t need to die,” I said coldly.

“He was lying and he was disobedient.”

“Says who?”

“Vanessa Scott and Robert Carson. They said he had to go.”

“But he wasn’t spouting bullocks was he Brady? Because you are doing what I think you’re doing with her,” I said eyeing him suspiciously.

“So what if I am?” he challenged.

“Then be prepared to be tortured slowly to your grave when Carson finds out,” I retorted.

“As long as you keep your mouth shut he won’t find out.”

“Brady, I won’t need to tell anyone because Carson is smart. He’s a complete psychopath but a genius.”

“Meaning…?” he asked.

“Meaning, he would probably shoot his own mother to get whatever it is he’s looking for, he’d make short work of it too. The man knows what he wants and he sure knows how to get it.”

Brady rolled his eyes. “You know Jared what you just said went through one ear and out the other.”

His expression said that he didn’t want to talk about it anymore. I couldn’t care less about what he wanted.

“Back to the previous subject,” he began. “She’s not a danger to us. Just to her enemies and herself. I know that and you know that.”

“But does she?” I looked down at her. “You act like she won't kill you for what you did to her but you’re wrong, she will. And now that she knows how to pull the trigger, she won't hesitate to use it against you.”

“Lighten up, man. She’ll be fine, she-.”
I cut him off. “What’re you on about? Does she look fine to you? You and your ruddy girlfriend made sure of that!” I exclaimed.

“For God’s sake Jared shut up and listen!” he yelled. He sighed. “She’s going to go through worse than what just happened. If you listened to what people tell you then maybe you and the people you care about won’t get hurt.”

I glared at him. I swear my head was going to explode.

“What’s going to happen Brady? What’s she planning this time?”

He was quiet then. He obviously wasn’t going to rat Vanessa out.

“Tell me.”

“I don’t know what she’s got planned. She doesn’t trust me,” he sighed.

“But she trusts you enough to get into bed with you every five minutes.”

He gave me a look of contempt. “That’s not how it is.”

I laughed humourlessly. “Do you honestly expect me to believe that crap?”

He was quiet.

“What the hell’s going on Brady?

“I’m working on it. Give me a break.”

“Look Brady, I'm going to let you in on something,” I paused. “I’m in a very, very deep hole and when you’re in a hole you don’t keep on digging. Unfortunately, I have made that hole slightly deeper and if I don’t get answers, if I get stuck in that hole, I'm taking you with me. Capiche?”

“Are you threatening me?” he glared.

“Yeah, actually. I am.”

“C’mon Jared you can’t be serious about this. Why do you care so much about her?”

I didn’t say anything.

“Oh God. Please don’t tell me you’re in love with her.” he groaned. “Jared, are you out of your mind? You really think that it’s going to be possible with someone like her.”

That did it. “Shut up Brady because you don’t know what you are talking about. You don’t know what happened to her or me. You know nothing about my past or what’s happening to me right now. So just keep your opinions to yourself,” I hissed.

At that moment Saffron’s eyes snapped open.

My eyes opened. I sat up. The first thing I saw was Brady’s gun on the table. It was facing me. I blinked. Gunshots rang loud and clear through my ears. I flinched. But it was in my head. It wasn’t real. Jared and Brady were staring at me. I blinked.

Saph, are you okay?” Jared’s voice came first. I shuddered. A look of pain crossed his face.

Jared get her out of here,” Brady said.

Shut up,” Jared said coldly. Brady flinched at the tone in his voice.

W-w-where am I?” I stuttered.

You’re still in the compound,” Brady answered.

I said shut up,” Jared said through gritted teeth.

Don’t you dare tell me what to do you stupid-.”

Be quiet,” I whispered.

They looked in my direction.

Sorry Saph. Look, are you ok?” Jared asked.

I ignored him. Hurt flashed across his face but he hid it quickly with a blank expression.

Saffron are you ok?”

I'm fine,” I said faintly. I didn’t want to talk to Jared at the moment. He was a liar and as far as I was concerned I couldn’t trust him. I couldn’t trust anyone. I was in a game where I was a pawn in the frontline. That was the one thing I was sure of.
