Basso Continuo

The sight of anything beautiful brings back the memory of what one loves.

Like chords

       discordant

despite melody,

       as if played

by one deaf –

       though still

with point of harmony –

              within me

       stirs

a music made

       of forgotten

things.

       Things

found in many places

       and many times

best left forgotten

              and left far

       behind.

The chords continue –

       a piano

backed now

       by strings;

these things will not

       cease –

              leave me in peace;

       leave me to sleep.

Sleep I might

       fnd, perhaps, were

I to relax,

       perhaps relax

in some quiet place

       far from music

and discordial

              harmonies –

       sleeping memories.

My quiet place is

       behind,

far from me both

       in place, and in time,

left to gather rust,

       dust and leaves

with other forgotten

              memories. Let me be;

       leave me to sleep.

A composer

       may not sleep.
