6. The Beggar Queens' Devil

The Beggar Queens' Devil

by 94931355

Firelight turns men into devils and devils into queens

and queens into beggars who search on ghostly feet through

brimstone streets for men of courage,

            all odds to defeat.

I forget when it was first that the snake came

to me and hissed those truths—its tongue tickled my ear—

but it seems long ago and far away;

            enticed was I with the idea of truth.

On ghostly feet, for a man may have ghostly feet

in flight, the beggar queen's devil

leaves her to firelight.

I forget when it was first that the snake came

to you and hid away the truth, but it seems as if only yesterday;

            disillusioned were you with the idea of truth.

Disillusioned was I when flame exposed

those cities of devils upon the brink of the Styx;

            and disillusioned was I when my truths went unheard.

The beggar queens' devil

leaves her to firelight.
