Chapter 6

The Quiet

Aria’s POV

I’ve always loved the interstate. There’s something about it that just makes me feel peaceful. That car ride was no different. I calmly stared out that the passing mile markers and other cars. The car was pretty quiet. My parents were speaking softly in the front, “The Reason” by Hoobastank playing softly through the car.

Victoria gave me back my book and took out her own, so I began to read and was soon lost in my own world. I was reading a series she’d recommended and was as obsessed with it as Dakota was with One Direction fanfiction. I’d always loved books. This one was huge and full of romance, perilous twists, and looping turns. I hadn’t been able to put it down for very long at a time.

Around six my dad pulled into a Wendy’s and we went in, ordered our food, and sat down, letting my parents get the trays, as they said they would. My dad brought me chocolate shake, whip cream, no cherry, and my ten piece chicken nugget with barbecue sauce. I wasn’t one of the girls who ate lightly. That was fine with me. My friends got their food and we were soon laughing and talking about the concert. I was shaking and so nervously excited. I hadn’t been to many concerts, but this would be the best one ever.

“This is going to be SO great!” Dakota exclaimed happily.

“Better than great,” I replied, so excited I could feel it in my veins.

I had my mom take a few group pictures of us and uploaded them quickly to my facebook, captioned with “Almost ready for the best night of our lives!” and tagged the girls. We ate quickly, not out of being late, since we were actually making good time, but just because of how excited we were. Piling back in the car, Dakota sat by me with Victoria on my other side, Selena and Sasha in the front, since Dakota said she needed to show me something about her fanfic.

“SEE? SEE? SEE?” Dakota asked quickly. “DO YOU SEE?” She was pointing in her fanfic to where a girl, ironically named Dakota, had both Liam and Harry both begging for her to go out with them.

“Yes, D. I see. You’re a very lucky girl,” I joked.

She didn’t answer, already reading to see what happened next. I laughed and rolled my eyes, leaning into Victoria’s shoulder, opening my book again. My ipod was playing “This Love” by Maroon 5. Sasha was doodling in a notebook, Victoria and Dakota both reading, and Selena was staring out the window, phone in hand. We drove.

After a few minutes, Victoria shifted uncomfortably, so I leaned away from her. “You okay?” She nodded and I allowed myself to gravitate back to her. She turned another page in her book and I did the same. We were so alike.

“You girls are so quiet,” My mum commented.

“I’ve never heard my daughter speak so little.” My dad added, making everyone laugh.

“We’ve all got ways to pass the time,” I told them, knowing the other girls were still too shy to really talk to my parents. Dakota was probably the closest to them, but my parents actually adored all my friends.  Victoria nodded, still engrossed in her book and Dakota threw her head up for just a second in a slightly squirrel-like motion before returning to her fanfiction. The other girls didn’t react, Sasha concentrating on a lovely sketch and Selena texting someone.

I waited to see if my parents were going to carry out the conversation, but they were silent, so I allowed my head to fall back to my book. I felt something land on me and saw that Dakota had fallen asleep, which didn’t really surprise me. No matter how excited she was, that girl could still fall asleep at the drop of a hat. I sighed and let her head fall to a more comfortable position on my shoulder and looked over at Victoria, who was watching us, amused. I shot her a small smile and went back to my book.
