Mattie

©Molly Looby No way. I knew I was dying. I knew I was dying fast, but this hit me like a speeding bullet. How long did I have left, years, months, weeks? Days...?
Hours...?

For Ali-Rose life is just a fading moment. Fighting from her inevitable death is the only thing she can do to save her family from the grief that is sure to engulf them. But something on the horizon is about to change her life...
Forever...

(This is a Twilight fanfic set twelve years after the end of 'Breaking Dawn', but not from Bella's POV, from the POV of Ali-Rose - all will be revealed if you care to read on.)

(Author's Note: Before you read Mattie, please can I just point out that it was written when I was fourteen-fifteen years old, and it was also the first thing I ever wrote and finished, for my own benefit and that of a close friend. I know it has its flaws and I'm okay with that because this story made me grow as an author more than I could've imagined. I truly hope you enjoy it.)

15. WATCHED

I WASN’T SURPRISED TO SEE TEN PEOPLE STANDING around my bed in the morning. My chest had been hurting the day before, so I was expecting it. I composed myself before opening my mouth to speak.

“Was it bad?”

“Yes. Quite, but nothing we can’t handle.”

I nodded my head. They should be preparing themselves for the worst, I was.

Edward growled at me. The look on his face told me what he wanted to say - don’t think like that. I crawled out of bed pathetically. It was strange how I could feel myself getting physically weaker day by day. It was unsettling. Everyone disappeared, except for Carlisle and Esme.

“Do you want to go to school today Mattie?”

Excitement overwhelmed me for a minute. My name. It was perfect. “Yeah, I’m not sure why, but it feels normal to go to school.”

“Okay. You’re only in danger in the evening and at night. The morning is a perfectly safe time for you. You deteriorate slowly as the day goes on and then it starts again in the morning.”

I nodded my head at this new information. Brilliant, I thought, at least during the day things will stay the same.

“Thank you Carlisle.” The words weren’t enough to convey all the meaning behind them. I would be long dead without Carlisle.

“Mattie,” Esme asked. I felt the same jolt of thrill as I had a few minutes ago. “If you want I can give you some more food today - for energy.”

I pulled a face. “Yuck! No thanks Esme.”

“Okay dear, if you’re sure.”

“Yes, definitely.”

Esme glided out of the room with Carlisle. That was strange. Esme knew how much human food disgusted me. I shrugged it off and started getting ready. I was interrupted again once I’d finished in the bathroom. Jasper was waiting outside of the door for me. I flipped the towel off my head and jumped as I saw him.

“Sorry, did I make you jump?”

“Yeah just a tad.” I laughed. “What?”

“You’re handling this well.”

“Am I? Wow, that’s a first.”

He laughed with me. “If you want I can hang around you while you’re in the house.”

“No thanks Jazz, I’m doing okay by myself. I’ll tell you if I need you.”

“Okay, I’ll see you later Mattie.”

The jolt was just as strong as before, but I recovered quicker. A huge smile was left on my face. I knew Jasper had felt what I just had. I had just wriggled into my school blazer as I was joined by Bella.

“Hi.” I said as I jumped into her lap. It was easy to forget that I was fourteen in as many ways that count.

“Hi.” She replied smiling.

“Wow Edward’s not here!” I was astonished. “Is everything okay?” I asked sarcastically. Just as the words had left my mouth Edward appeared at Bella’s side on the end of my bed. He kissed her lightly and turned to me, leaving Bella slightly dazed.

“You okay?”

“Yep, I think the huge smile on my face speaks for itself.”

He and Bella chuckled. “If you need anything just ask.”

“Will do.”

“If he’s annoying you just tell me.” Bella added.

He growled playfully at her and she growled back. They stared longingly at each other.

“Ugh. Get out of here!”

They disappeared in the blink of an eye and I was left in peace again. I flicked on the hair straighteners and watched as Renesmee and Jacob, always seen as a pair, entered my room.

“Hi.” They said in unison.

“Hello.” I didn’t stop what I was doing. I sat down on the floor and began doing my hair.

“Do you want us to take you to school today?” Jacob was very enthusiastic about this plan.

“Yeah okay, you didn’t have to ask.”

They shrugged together, laughing at the chorus of their movements.

“You can go.” I pointed out. “All the extra help is kinda annoying now.”

“Okay whatever honey.”

Jacob and Renesmee walked out of the door hand in hand. I sighed and ignored the pain that was tied to the action. I wish I had someone. I shook my head and continued on the more important things. I was trying to sort out my impossible fringe as my next helper came into view.

“I’ll help you with that if you want.”

“No Rose, I’m done now anyway.”

“Okay.” She didn’t move from where she was standing. I started packing my school bag with the various books that I’d need today. I had quite a few books and my P.E bag - great. Emmett was next to Rosalie when I turned around. I picked up my bags, testing the weight. Emmett took them out of my hands and carried them downstairs in a flash.

“Emmett, what are you doing?” I said as he reappeared.

“Helping.”

“Thanks, but you didn’t need to.”

“I know.”

I strolled downstairs to breakfast. Esme had made bacon and sausages for me. They were better than soggy cereal – repulsive. Only Alice left and then there wouldn’t be anyone left who hadn’t tried to help me. As if on cue Alice sat next to me. I had just finished my breakfast so she didn’t have to put up with sitting so close to something so vile.  She laughed as I made a face.

“Anything I can do Mattie?” She gave my name a funny ring.

“No.” I giggled.

“Can you believe you’ve done a whole year of school now?!”

“I know! Last day of school excitement is something I’ve never understood until now.”

“I’m glad you get to stay at home from now on.”

“Me too, I shouldn’t get any homework. I just get to spend all of my time with you until September, can you handle it?”

She laughed at me. “I think so. I’ve had training.”

I skipped happily to Edward’s Volvo. Alice was coming along too, I didn’t really understand why. I sighed with bliss as I entered my tutor room for the last time this year.

My day was good. The work was very easy. I chatted to my friends for as long as I could. I found out as much as I could about them. I kept thinking - this might be the last time you see them, make the most of it. After lunch we had an I.C.T lesson. The teacher told us to do whatever we wanted; he’d given up as much as we had. Instead of mucking about on the computers like everyone else we used the lesson to spend time together as a group. We would all miss each other ridiculously. When the conversation headed towards a new T.V program I got my mirror out to check up on myself. I looked healthy. I looked a bit closer. I looked better than yesterday. I seemed to have gained some beauty over night. My skin had a new healthy glow and my eyes seemed to sparkle. My hair was hanging perfectly over the sides of my face. When I smiled the whole image lit up even more. I giggled softly at myself. I snapped my mirror shut and tried to catch up with the conversation. I looked at each face, deciding who to ask or listen to. I caught Jay staring at me. I dropped my gaze. I looked at my trousers quickly. I gave it a minute and chanced looking up. He wasn’t looking at me. I sighed with relief and looked at Martin. His eyes moved swiftly away from me. He’d been looking too. I looked at Jamie, hoping he wasn’t the same. Jamie was staring fully into my face, not bothering to look away. He didn’t even seem to notice that I was now staring back. I saw my own confused reflection in his eyes. I got back into the conversation, but Jamie didn’t look away. After two minutes I was getting very freaked out. I was surprised that neither Alison nor Harriet had noticed any staring.  I waved my hand in front of my face.

“Jamie?” He shook his head and focus came back to his eyes.

“I’m sorry. Was I staring?” He seemed to have been in some kind of trance.

“Uh yeah.” I said slightly uncomfortable. I left it at that. During the hour I caught all three of them staring again at least twice. What was wrong with me? It wasn’t just them staring either. I caught a few others doing it. A thought shot into my brain as we walked to our final lesson of year nine. Am I developing vampire beauty, or something like it?

Yes. Ah. That was why everyone was staring. Wow, vampire beauty, well, some of it. It was nice to think that I was attractive to humans. It was just a shame that I was losing everything else.

I was glad when I was back in the Volvo. The day had rushed past. Alice was in the back with me. I decided to ask her whether she’d noticed a change in my appearance. She should notice ten times more than the people at school did.

“Alice do I look different today?”

She looked at me closely. “Yes. You look very beautiful today.”

I blushed, bringing a wave of colour to my cheeks. Jacob chuckled and Alice sighed.

“I wish Edward could have seen that.”

I just smiled. “Do you think I’ve developed a hint of vampire beauty?”

A hint? You’ve got a lot more than a hint, you don’t see yourself clearly enough.”

“Who does?” I stepped out of the car, allowing Jacob to park it in the house sized garage. As the day continued everyone got more and more cautious around me. I tried not to let it bother me. I did a lot of typing to keep my mind occupied. I lost track of the time. I had been writing for an hour when I was interrupted by ten people strolling into my room. I looked up, confused.

“What are you doing?” I asked them all.

“What do you want for your birthday Mattie?” Alice asked.  The question caught me off guard. I’d forgotten all about my birthday. It was just under two months away. Two months until I was ’fifteen’.

“Umm.”

“You can have anything you want.” Alice added. She didn’t need to say that. I knew that if I wanted something I would most definitely get it.

“Well you know what I really want, and there’s no chance that I’m getting that for my birthday is there?”

“You’re doing well. There’s no need to do anything rash.”

I giggled. I hadn’t thought about my birthday at all. I was sure that Alice would sort something out, she always did. I didn’t really care about my birthday. It was just something to celebrate - something for Alice to get excited about every year. Both Bella and Renesmee had their birthdays in the same week as mine. It was just a huge coincidence, but I liked it. Alice would be rather busy between now and September.
