Mattie

©Molly Looby No way. I knew I was dying. I knew I was dying fast, but this hit me like a speeding bullet. How long did I have left, years, months, weeks? Days...?
Hours...?

For Ali-Rose life is just a fading moment. Fighting from her inevitable death is the only thing she can do to save her family from the grief that is sure to engulf them. But something on the horizon is about to change her life...
Forever...

(This is a Twilight fanfic set twelve years after the end of 'Breaking Dawn', but not from Bella's POV, from the POV of Ali-Rose - all will be revealed if you care to read on.)

(Author's Note: Before you read Mattie, please can I just point out that it was written when I was fourteen-fifteen years old, and it was also the first thing I ever wrote and finished, for my own benefit and that of a close friend. I know it has its flaws and I'm okay with that because this story made me grow as an author more than I could've imagined. I truly hope you enjoy it.)

24. THE PHOTO

I FELL ASLEEP IN HIS ARMS AGAIN THAT NIGHT. I awoke feeling cooler than usual, it was very pleasant.

“Good morning.” Tyler said cheerfully.

I opened my eyes and smiled. “So it wasn’t a dream?”

He chuckled. “I don’t think so. If it was then it’s still going.”

“Hmm.” I muttered. I rolled over so that I could wrap my arms around him. I still couldn’t believe the events that had happened yesterday. They were too good to be true. Tyler rested his hand on my face and whispered into my ear.

“Don’t go back to sleep, it’s morning, and I’m pretty sure Alice wants to show you something.”

I growled, irritated. He chuckled.

“You are a growly little thing aren’t you? I’ve never known someone to growl so much.”

I giggled. “I get annoyed easily.”

He chuckled again. I sat up and my head spun.

“Whoa.” I said, putting my hand to my head.

“What?” he asked, anxiety written across his face.

“Dizzy.” I complained. “How long have I been asleep?”

“Twelve hours.”

“Twelve? Really? Wow.”

“Well you did have a very emotional day, it tired you out.”

I swung my legs over my bed and slid onto the floor. I stood up slowly. Tyler had already made my bed for me and had taken my hand. I stared at his inhumanly beautiful face, reminding myself that he loved me. I had a shower as quickly as possible and threw on the first thing that my hands touched. I sprung down the stairs, losing my balance half way down. I was lucky that someone was always there to catch me. I was surprised to find that it was Alice’s arms that held me. She was suppressing a smile.

“Hey Alice!” I greeted her cheerfully. It had felt like a while since I had spoken to her, though it was really only one day.

“You seem very happy.” She noted as she returned me to a standing position.

I smiled and nodded. “Tyler said you wanted to show me something.”

A smile flashed across her face. She nodded as she pulled me into the living room. All of the photo albums were scattered across the room, some on the floor, and others in people’s hands. It looked as if they were looking through them and passing them on. Everyone was in the living room, including the one person I had missed during the few minutes I had been away from him. He smiled at me. His hands were empty - a photo album had not yet been passed to him. I was fighting the urge to run over to him, but I remembered that my attention should be with Alice.

“Alice, what’s going on?”

“I just thought it’d be fun to get the photo albums out.”

I didn’t understand what she meant. She pushed me over to the smaller sofa where Tyler was sitting. With no more instructions, I sat in his lap. She sat beside me waiting for the first album to reach us. I watched as Bella and Edward received the first album. The thought of their wedding still put an exhilarated smile on Edward’s face. Emmett and Rosalie, who were sitting next to Bella and Edward on the larger sofa, were laughing at the first of Renesmee’s albums. In the armchair was Carlisle and Esme, before Rosalie and Emmett in the chain. It must have been a weekend, Carlisle was home. I couldn’t keep up with the date, it didn’t matter. Sitting on the floor underneath the T.V., Renesmee and Jacob began the chain. Jasper appeared next to Alice just before the first album reached them. I wondered what Alice was actually doing. Why did she want us to look in the albums? What on earth did she want to show me? I realised, as the first album was passed to me, that Tyler hadn’t seen any of the photos. I began to describe Edward and Bella’s wedding to him as we flicked through them. Even though I hadn’t been there, I found that I could recall the story perfectly from memory. I explained every picture that I could, informing him of our family history. After all, he was a Cullen now. He needed to know our story. We lingered on my albums, Tyler wanting to know anything I could possibly tell him about the pictures. I turned the page after the last picture, which was me as Alice-Rose. There was one last picture. I hadn’t known that it had been taken. I was in the living room between Bella and Rosalie on the largest sofa, with Emmett and Jacob standing either side of it. You could see Renesmee and Jasper sitting on the other sofa, smiles on their faces. Tyler was also there. He was standing up, facing me. The smile on his face was one of affection as he gazed at me. I was laughing. My cheeks were pink and my eyes were wide. You could read the awe in my eyes even in the picture. It was a picture of the first day I met Tyler.

“I needed to show you.” Alice whispered. I hadn’t noticed the silence that filled the room. Every eye was on me. “Look at how healthy you are here, compared to the previous picture.” She was right. The natural blush on my cheeks was pretty. My skin looked healthy, not too pale, but not too flushed. My eyes glowed amazing violet, true emotion in them. I looked closely at the expression on my face. It was one of love. I had fallen in love with Tyler the moment I saw him, but only realised days later. It truly had been love-at-first-sight. I looked up at Tyler who was smiling brightly. I smiled back, unable to speak. Tyler spoke for me. He asked the exact question I had wanted to ask.

“Do you think that the improvements in her health are anything to do with me?”

Carlisle answered. “It’s the only thing that I can think of. She hasn’t had a bad night since she met you. What else could it be?”

The question was left hanging, everyone lost in their own thoughts. Mine, of course, were on Tyler. Not only was he the light in my life, he was also my saviour. I had my own knight in shining armour. I might have been dead without him. His life and mine were truly linked. I thought about becoming a vampire. Spending eternity with Tyler was my new wish. I wondered when my wish was going to be granted. It couldn’t hurt to ask.

“Carlisle, as soon as I’m ‘sixteen’ can I be turned?”

I saw panic appear in Tyler’s eyes. I realised that I had never asked his opinion, and that his opinion was more important even than Rosalie’s had been.

“You’re surviving well, there’s no need.” Carlisle answered, relaxing Tyler.

“But I don’t like being human.”

“I know, but for now you’re safe.”

Tyler kissed my forehead and I surrendered. Being human wasn’t that bad. As long as he never left my side.

We spent the rest of the day in the living room. Rosalie, Emmett, Bella, and Edward disappeared after dinner. I played chess with Alice and lost. I wasn’t very good at chess. She could beat me blind-folded. At ten o’clock I found myself alone with Tyler for the first time today. He smiled as realisation touched my eyes. We were in my bedroom, Carlisle had just told me to go up to bed. He knew that I wouldn’t fall asleep for a while yet. I was about to walk towards him when he held up his hand. I stopped.

“What ?” I asked, confused.

“You should get ready for bed.”

“Okay.” I pushed him further into my bedroom. “Wait right here.” I grabbed my pyjamas and raced into the bathroom. I could have set the world record for getting ready for bed. I dashed back into my bedroom. Tyler hadn’t moved a muscle. I giggled.

“Can I move now?” He asked as I walked towards him.

“Yes.”

He wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me up onto my tiptoes. We smiled at each other and the whole world didn’t matter anymore. I wanted something romantic to say, but I couldn’t think of anything. There were no words. The piano was playing downstairs. It was probably Esme, or maybe Carlisle. Tyler took a step back.

“Can I have this dance?” He outstretched his hand towards me. I took it and skipped forwards as delicately as I could.  He held me in his arms and we slowly turned to the music. I didn’t really know how to dance. I just followed Tyler’s lead, my arms around his neck now. The song drifted to a close and our eyes met.

“I love you.” I whispered to him.

“I love you more.” He whispered back.

“I don’t think that’s possible.”

“It is.”

His lips met mine and blood rushed to my cheeks. He pulled away and chuckled.

“I’m going to be the death of you.”

“I think you have the opposite effect, you’re saving me. You know you can never leave, because if you do I will actually drop dead.” I smiled.

“Why would I ever leave you?” My heart thundered in my chest and our lips met again, for longer this time. I kissed him with as much passion as I could. I wanted to say a million things, but I was silenced. He kissed me back with just as much passion but he was careful, making sure he didn’t hurt me. When I opened my eyes again I was dizzy. I was gasping, breathless. Tyler had the same problem, but he recovered quickly, not actually needing to breathe at all. He picked me up and put me on my bed.

“I’m going to have to learn how to keep you breathing properly.” He said, a hint of a chuckle in his voice.

I giggled, not caring that I still couldn’t breathe. I crawled under the cover and sighed. He laid next to me, stroking my hair. I sighed and cuddled up next to him. I opened my mouth to speak, but he put his finger to my lips.

“Shhh.” He whispered. “Sleep.”

I obeyed immediately, closing my eyes. He began humming. It was the song from the radio – our song. I listened to his gentle humming and fell asleep, in what can only be described as heaven.
